The end does not always justify the means
Not all publicities are good publicities
Venus has done her share of publicity for WTA over the years and even now, she does not need to go this route to generate publicity for the WTA.

It's ridiculous that this is such a big issue. The problem people have is with the shorts but as Venus said, it is just an illusion, she is still decent and wearing just as much clothes as the next WTA player so this is a non-issue.

With all due respect, it does not matter what Venus says, people are reacting to WHAT THEY SEE.

You think people who see this picture around the world care what fashion explanation Venus gives? It is a gut reaction to the visual.
You are making it look like people are attending a Fashion exhibits where each piece has explanation

Here in the USA, The Jay Leno Show( a late night comedy show) had a blowup copy of the photoon yesterday.

I personally don't like venus's outfit but I don't see what all the fuss is about, its her choice to wear what she wants to. I really think if hantuchova or sharapova wore a dress like this they would not be considered to look like a 'slut'

Vee is such a trend setter! Obviously she is quite comfortable in her own skin and has a very creative mind of her own. At least the kids never forget what illusion means. She is not bare bottom therefore I don't understand what code she is violating. I won't be surprised if I see the same concept used in the future, then I guess it will become acceptable to those who are now criticizing. Venus has a great ass and the camera men seem to always get a shot of it even when she is wearing black shorts and bend to put her racquets in her bag therefore it is no biggie to me.

No shot from the front?

It almost looks to me like I see a V shape at the top, like she has a thong on, and the rest of the ass is covered in "nude" color panties, or basically see-through.

Eh, I'm torn. I don't think the outfit itself is very appropriate for a tennis court, but I'm not going to go apeshit about it... If it were my daughter, I'd be disappointed, but it's not.

I love the look, it's something new/something different and Venus pulls it off amazingly well (as it enhances her body structure)

IMHO, she doesn't look like a slut and the whole image isn't..."unclassy" but I can see how some people might be concerned with children.

The important word is "illusion"- at first glance it would seem Venus is going commando but with more attention it can be seen she's wearing shorts. It's not as if she's actually wearing nothing. Illusion.

Illusion.
The thing is, whenever you have to explain why an outfit is not what people perceive it to be, and your audience is NOT a museum audience, you are on thin ice as far as convining them.

The outfit uproar has reached a large non-tennis audience and they have already made up their judgment by looking at the raw picture.
They are not going to stick around and listen to some "artsy", educational talk about "illusion theme" of a panties

For most of them, this is the first exposure they have seen of Venus, and unfortunately that would be the only impression left.

I'm not trying to convince anyone. I'm actually stating the obvious, at first glance it does look as if she's wearning nothing, but with more attention people can see she's wearing same skin coloured shorts. That's the point I'm making as SOME people are over-reacting as if Venus has gone commando, when she hasn't. It's the illusion affect that people are being given and if they don't like it well, tough luck. Venus will carry on wearing the outfit, regardless of what anyone else thinks. People are just going to have to deal with it and move on.

Who cares about an uproar? Sure Venus' outfit has reached a large non-tennis audience but their one off judgement means nothing because, that's all it is- a one-off judgement. No one can judge Venus' character as a whole over something she wears. That's plain stupid and if they do then as a result their judgement means nothing. That's the fact of the matter. But hey, you get some stupid people in this world that probably would. They shouldn't be accommodated for in any way.

Anyway, have you read some of the comments from these large non-tennis audiences? In the Daily Mail, an English newspaper people were calling Venus a "man" AND other comments have indicated equally disgusting things , so who gives two hoots what they think? Why should they be accommodated for, in the sense that they should see Venus in a "classy" light? Why should Venus accommodate for them by following the general publics "standard" of tennis attire? From what you've said, it's clearly evident that you're concerned about what other people will think of Venus, when really you should stop wasting your time/concern.

Venus has always accomodated for people herself whether it's participating in BJK's stupid cup tournament or Fed Cup, or being taken advantage of with regards to scheduling so as a fan I'm glad she's "done her" and gone against the grain for once in a very long time.

No time to accommodate for some people that havent accommodated for her.

Now, this particular incident may not be enough to raise the red flags with these enitties.
However if the trend continues, the cumulative effect may.

Last but not least, whether Venus likes it or not, she is a role model for young girls.
And she has built a good reservoir of supportand following by the image she has projected throughout her career.

For these girls seeing this image is confusing. Good luck convining them with the "illusion" explanation. This is largely a non-tennis audience, not as sophisticated as posters on this board.

Incident? She's been wearing these damned shorts since the 1st round of the Australian Open. She has since signed a deal with Tide. If her sponsors had any problem with the color of her shorts one would think they would have voiced some displeasure about it over the course of the last 5 months.

Seriously do you honestly think anyone with even a modicum of sense would honestly believe that the woman would be playing tennis bare assed? And as far as role models go, if this "incident" (as you put it) somehow molds a young girls mind in some adverse way then she didn't have much of a foundation to begin with. How exactly are young girls going to emulate it? Are they going to go shopping for pink or brown panties? If those kinds of things were so bad they wouldn't be sold in stores.

It's a couple of still photos that do create an 'illusion of bareness' if some people are going to judge her harshly off of those couple of stills then they have a whole host of people out there to judge, because this is a pretty minor thing in the whole world of sports and entertainment. It's a little stunt and if some people will forever look badly at her for it then so be it. It's just a little hard for some to people to understand how an optical illusion is some sort of scandal. Say Venus was 3 or 4 shades darker than she is and she wore black shorts, and say a photo from a particular angle and light made it look like she was bare assed? Would she be somehow wrong for wearing black shorts? So I guess that particular shade of shorts should be forever banned for women of a similar skin tone? It's kind of funny how this whole thing is getting new life like this is the first time she's worn the damned shorts.

Since being dropped by the now defunt Steve & Barry's retail chain, no one has picked up the Eleven line, not even HSN.

Seems sort of desperate to me that Venus is now resorting to this to get someone, anyone to show interest in her line.

Personally, I don't know what is funnier: (1) the persistence of a logo for a non-existent fashion line; (2) the dress itself, with or without the logo; or (3), Venus' explanation that the dress is some kind of fashion innovation. ---

Q. (Through French translation.) Well, talking about your dress, I discussed with the crowd. They watched you. They love it. They think it's very sexy and it's a bit of a change. When we ask the men what they feel about it, when the dress flies a little when you serve, there is a man who said, It's good for my imagination. Was that your objective?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Well, the whole that was never the objective. I mean, it all started in Australia with the slits, and it was about a I had a dress with really long slits in the front, and it was about wearing a dress that it looks like, oh, you have these slits with bareness.
So it has really the design has nothing to do with the rear. It just so happens that I have a very well developed one (laughter.)
It's all genetic. If you look at mom and dad, you'll see the same thing happening. If you look at my sister, you'll see the same thing. It's genetic.
But it's really about the illusion. Like you can wear lace, but what's the point of wearing lace when there's just black under. The illusion of just having bare skin is definitely for me a lot more beautiful.
So it's really not about anything else other than just that skin showing. So I'm glad that, you know, it's gotten good reviews. I mean, it could be worse.

^You silly.

She needs to stop with the illusion. It was fun for 15 minutes, but both illusion dresses are ugly as hell. Scrap the illusion and go back to the goddess. And it's not like the fine would be big even to make any sort of dent in her bank account.

Venus has always worn white shorts at Wimbledon. I doubt she will change this year especially after the hoopla Tati Golovin caused with her red shorts a couple of years ago.

Venus basically said in her interview she knew what was needed at Wimbledon....anyways I like the dress and dont mind either way with the illusion on bareness... I think the black red and brown go great with her skin tone. That said Im interested in seeing how it would look if say she wore white or maybe a blue undergarment. Anyways since, you have to be in all white at wimbledon its not likely that she could wear the brown shorts now is it? Now it'd be interesting if they'd allow her to wear that dress with a white overlay and a black under garment. but that might still be too much color for Wimbledon.

Nah, that's not how Venus rolls.

Usually she'll have an AO dress that she wears in various colours throughout the year (The original illusion this year in yellow and now black, the goddess dress last year).

Then the Miami design that she uses in various colours til RG (Last year was the tie dye and the green/brown pattern thing). Her RG dress tends to be a reimagining of the texture of her Miami dress.

Then she'll come up with a simple design for Wimbledon in white, that she uses in colours until the US Open

Zeus.
May 27th, 2010, 03:10 AM
I don't think she'll wear it because it won't look that good, white dress and brown shots. Even if she does wear it, there's not much Wimbledon can do because they can't forbid hot-pants regardless in which color they might be.

I remember Tati's colored knickers :hearts:

Yeah - this is a provocative thread. Frankly, I can't think of any other players who could really pull it off and do it justice. The dress seems to be designed to suit her specific body type (long, lean, athletic but womanly. Venus isn't dead skinny.) Then again I saw a picture of her playing doubles in her Miami dress and her partner was wearing the Miami dress too. I surprised because even though this girl wasn't tall and slim, the dress still looked quite good on her actually.

Doesn't say a thing, as far as I know, Wimbledon can't ban someone for wearing colored clothing, they can protest against it, but that's all they can do. Because of the fact that players love the white tradition, they don't even bother to go in against that rule :)
