KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — World No. 1 Serena Williams won the 2009 WTA Tour Player of the Year award and also took the Doubles Team of the year honors with sister Venus at a ceremony held at the Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday.
Serena Williams, wearing high heels despite a knee injury, was all smiles when picking up her award. She won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, was a semifinalist at the U.S. Open and a quarterfinalist at the French Open.
The Williams sisters won the 2009 Australian Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open doubles titles as well as the doubles crown at Stanford.
"It's exciting because I don't think we've won the Doubles Team of the Year award before," Serena Williams told The Associated Press. "I won the daily double today and that was cool."
U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters captured the Comeback Player of the Year and Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award. This marked the seventh time in Clijsters career she won the sportsmanship award.
American teen Melanie Oudin, who had a breakthrough 2009 season in reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and quarterfinals at the U.S. Open, was honored as the Newcomer of the Year. Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, who broke into the top 20 last year, won the Most Improved Player award.
Naturalized American Liezel Huber won The Player Service Award for the fourth time in her career. Among the causes Huber's raised money for are Hurricane Katrina victims and "Locks of Love," a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from medical hair loss.
Russian Elena Dementieva was voted as the Fan Favorite Singles Player of the Year by fans online.

she is just ranked 4x.....
Seeing Serena out and about in heels is kind of comforting. I'm assuming she's not greatly injured, she might have even been able to play Miami but didn't want to chance it. If that's the case then I say GREAT! Sure it would have been great for her to play but perhaps she's saving her body to storm through the clay court season all the way to her second French Open title.
I can appreciate the look she was going for and I think she pulled it off. Sure her hair is a little suspect (that weave needs a treatment and a flat iron!) and her choice of lip color is questionable at best but her body looks to be in great shape.
Here's hoping she gets the award next year.

I guess this is one of those awards that is always given to the real winner no matter what (irrespective of whether the winner has already won it previously or not, which is what often happenes at awards in general (see Oscar for example).
In other words, here merit is supreme. There's no egalitarian "she already got one in the past, so let's give it to the second best this time" BS. And it just so happenes that, year after year, Kim is the best :p

Everyone knew Lisicki was talented and she had big expectations even before 2009. Wickmayer wasn't very highly regarded at all, so when she had her breakthrough it was more "out of nowhere" and seen as a sign of a player who improved hugely. Cp6uja

Ranking is important, but should not be crucial for final decision.
Oudin not only improve to TOP50, but she is still youngest player into WTA TOP100! And which is way more impressive than her TOP50 rank at last two slams of 2009 (Wimbledon and US Open) she defeat 5 seeds including some really big WTA names like Sharapova, Jankovic, Dementieva and Petrova! Of course that she deserve "newcomer of the year" award for 2009!
Similar thing is with Wickmayer who reach USO SF right from nowhere. Stosur improvement is also impressive and unexpected, but she is WTA veteran (former #1 in doubles and solid TOP30 player in singles) and Lisicki in 2009 just continue her progress from 2008, nothing unexpected.

I didn't said that she is not a good player, she is fantastic young player BUT there are just players that improve much better than her in 2009: MJMS jumped over 60 places to the top 30, won 2 single titles and became fantastic doubles player. Then your whole last post was irrelevant since you were comparing Melanie to MJMS and Stosur and saying how they improved more than her, which was then pointless since she didn't even win that award. She was given Newcomer, so then shouldn't your argument have been that how they were more impressive than Yanina and not Melanie. So then Yanina was a better Newcomer. But you didn't, instead you say she won the award because she is American. But whatever, I don't want to argue over this.
