Kelly was more naturally beautiful, but few commanded the screen like Garbo. If you've only seen her in stills, you have no idea of her power. She was actually better in silent films, IMHO.

Truthfully neither are big faves with me. I guess I just don't go for that perfect features, ice maidenesque look.

From the 20s,30s and 40s I find actresses like Claudette Colbert, Carole Lombard, Sylvia Sidney, Simone Simon, Veronica Lake and Louise Brooks to be much more to my liking.

And from the 50s and 60s my favourites would include Anouk Aimee, Audrey Hepburn, Anna Karina, Jacqueline Sassard, Soledad Miranda and Monica Vitti.

Garbo and Kelly were in a class with Hedy Lamarr, actresses so beautiful that they almost ceased to look human. So yes, both were very very beautiful. But for me they never had that something that could reach out and touch my heart. Both of them were just too aloof for that. Ok if forced to choose I would go with Grace.

Garbo had such a magneticsm about her. Every glare breathed fire.

It was something some critic said (and i'm probably paraphrasing);

'Garbo had a face that was used for a template for everyone's unexpressed emotions'. I think this was the essence of her beauty.

I agree about the Bergam choice. Beyond beauty:hearts:

Grace Kelly. Like Max said above she was more naturally beautiful.

And as also noted above, Ingrid Bergman was beautiful. Her greatest appeal being that she did not use makeup. Men always found her to be especially appealing because of that.

Bergman was a great actress, she's not my type. I just haven't seen that many Rita Heyworth movies.

Pointless trivia: Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine were both cousins of Geoffrey de Havilland, the aviation pioneer and creator of such famous aircraft as the DH4 and the immortal Mosquito.

Her nickname was "the most beautiful woman in films."

Groucho Marx used to tell a story about being invited by C.B. DeMille to a private screening of Sampson and Delilah, after which C.B. asked Groucho, "How'd you like the picture?" Groucho replied, "You've got the roles reversed. Victor Mature has much bigger knockers than Hedy Lamarr."

Nobody has mentioned Helen Lawson and that "rode hard & put-up wet" look she carried off so gracefully. Sure, most of her movies were rotten enough to gag a maggot, but she was something else. It gaddamned near broke my heart to see her reduced to doing those awful commercials for Depends. Why couldn't they just let her demonstrate the product by pouring water with dye into the diaper instead of debasing herself in that manner??

Also, I agree with the choice of Lauren Bacall, and when we're talking about Hollywood actresses of the 40s and 50s, a pretty face that comes to mind is Gene Tierney. Spencer Tracy was quoted to call her the most beautiful actress Hollywood had ever seen, but I must admit I find her a bit vapid and blank on the screen.

By today's standards I would say Princess Grace. I saw a documentary about Greta Garbo which included some clips of her films - rightly or wrongly she would be laughed at today. Her acting was very odd and she looked deranged. She was very much of her time.

I've only seen pictures and clips of MD. I wouldn't have called her beautiful really. She was very much like Garbo in many ways - very much an oddity of a bygone era. Sorry to say but she would look ludicrous in films today.

I think she would still survive in Hollywood today because she is so natural looking, whereas a lot of the stars of old Hollywood look peculiar now. I also love her voice and that of her daughter too - they are both very beautiful in a way that will stand the test of time.

I don't know of any other actress B4 Anne Bancroft (RIP) who were offered the role, other than Doris. I don't think Grace ever acted professionally after her marriage; her last film (High Society) came out the same year as her wedding, but was presumably already done and in the editing process when she went to the altar in April. (It was her 2nd film released that year, after The Swan)

I had a huge crush on Romy Schneider when I saw her in an old Visconti film on TV when I was a kid. I always thought Kelly was a little overrated on looks and talent. I did think the Country Girl is disturbingly good though, a good Oscar choice on a lackluster year, sort of like the last several if you ask me. Kelly was banging Bing Crosby during the shoot-and if you see that movie, Bing wasn't exactly in his prime. More proof positive that gal bedded down with anything that moved.
