'according to the viewers of UK VH1'

So its got absolutely nothing to do with their relevance as artists, only popularity with the UK satellite tv viewing public.

LOL to see Courtney and Peej sandwiched between Pink and Shania Twain!

Carol King should be FAR higher than her 54th position.

Some of the positions are hard to believe. Looks like a few voters were on drugs when they cast their vote.

Roberta Flack at 92. What an insult!

But it is all opinions, not everyone likes Britney or Kylie or Courtney Love or Aaliyah etc etc

Loads of polls happen and none of them reflect the true public opinion cos not every1 votes

Decent music is to what each individual likes, no rights or wrongs

I shamefully voted for Celine Dion, yep her music is the best, but to put Britney 2nd in something makes me feel like a dirty cheat

I only hope she can forgive me one day  Sorry Britney

That poll is just ridiculous. Q's was better. Madonna and Kylie #1 and #2? That's mad. Without Debbie Harry pathing the way Madonna would have found it tougher to break through.

The real trailblazers should have topped that list e.g Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry, Courtney Love, Patti Smith, Bjork etc.

Aloysius
Oct 4th, 2002, 03:28 PM
There was obviously no set criteria when voting for this list, except that they had to be women in music. The list reflects plenty of people with plenty of opinions each with a different set of their own criteria when voting.

I sound so know-it-all there, but that's the reason in case some of you were wondering why Britney Spears, Geri Halliwell, Kylie Minogue, and others were so high on the list, or were even there at all.

Credit where credit is due, Madonna deserves to be very very high on this list. Top 5, no question, but I don't think #1. My assessment of Celine Dion and Whitney Houston at #3 and #4 would be slightly less flattering. The two of them added together total slightly less than nothing. Anyone with a good voice who had the same management, same promotion, and same songs handed to them could have had equal success. Kylie Minogue clealy belongs somewhere out of the top 10, but as she is more of a European/Australian sensation than North American, I don't feel expert enough to say exactly where.

See this is why I hate these polls. Madonna at #1, you've got to be kidding. While Madonna is a "personality" or an "entertainer" she is not a singer.

JDIH, it's not just about 'personal tastes'. Sure, a lot of art criticism is subjective, but it's plain fact that artists like Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell etc. and superb interpreters such as Billie Holiday, Diana Ross etc. are infinitely better than manufactured puppets like Britney (no matter how many great pop tunes she has) or technically perfect but soulless cardboard singers like the Dion woman.

Is anyone seriously saying that Billie Holiday is worse than Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Jennifer fucking Lopez?!

shirley
Oct 5th, 2002, 05:20 PM
I can't understand why Alicia Keys and Dido are so high up in the list. They've only released one album. Okay, fairs fair - both albums are hugely successful and critically acclaimed. But these artists (and a few more) are too 'new' to be that high up.

And then you have artists like Carole King, Chaka Khan, Bonnie Raitt who have been there, done that and are so low down.

Madonna deserves to be #1, she has had so much impact on the msuci world even if oyu don't liek her singing.(Even though I think she can sing better then 3/4 of the entire list.)

Glad to Celine at #3, the Titanic song really showed her belting ability.

Britney? Number 9? Alanis Morissette and Gwen Stefani should be higher IMO.

It's amazing Jennifer Lopez gets higher then Roberta Flack and Barbra Sterisand etc, forner greats at the bottom.:(

Oct 5th, 2002, 10:36 PM
I watched the whole thing with my mum & we were both suprised by Kylie (as great as she is) being so high. I think the way the votes went some are more based on current popularity(those that are thrust into the public eye e.g Britney & Kylie) being so high above the likes of Diana Ross.

it saus 100 Greatest Women In Music, what's so great about Brittney in Music.
Sorry, but I sing better then her, and I can't sing, I am a white guy, and that tells you basically how I sing.

I still KNOW that Aaliyah is #1, but they made a mistake!
:)

Nicoleke
Oct 6th, 2002, 06:07 PM
Céline Dion of course :) :D :) :D ;) !!!!!

CanadianBoy21
Oct 6th, 2002, 07:56 PM
I agree, Brittney needs to be scrubbed of the list.

Also agree with the 5 album thing, but Aaliyah wasn't given a chance to make 5 albums, she made three in the short time she lived, but she also acted in Romeo Must Die, and Queen of the Damned, and she did most of the songs on the soundtrack Romeo Must Die, plus she had many other songs that had not been released, and very good ones.
Are u that somebody and Try Again weren't on her albums either, which are great songs.
I can't help but think how even bigger she would have been, just released her album before god took an angel away, and also had a role in Matrix 2 and 3...Plus many other things.
And she did sing live several times, on Rosie, on Tonight Show, Regis, etc...
She can sing and dance incredibly.
