Both Venus and Serena do not the the greatest footwork in tennis, that is why in rallies they almost always look off balance. They are quick, however they tend to take giant steps to the ball and they don't always make the necessary small adjusting steps which would give them better balance and allow then to place the balls a lot of the times with the depth that they need.

Court positioning for Venus and Serena doesn't always work well for them, especially when they are playing against players who consistently have good lengths on their shots. When Serena plays Azarenka, she is too close to baseline so by the time Azarenka's shots reach her she doesn't have much space to put her full swing in motion and she ends up with short replies which allow Azarenka tee off on her returns. Venus especially has this problem. she has long arms and when she crowds the baseline she doesn't allow herself enough space to make a good swing. That s why playing Flavia and players like her is such a challenge for her.

Also Venus's second serve will not get much better because she has been carrying a shoulder injury for a while now. She refused to do surgery and has been getting treatment consitently for it. Her former coach and a good friend of Richard mentoned it when we were discussing her second serve issues after the Na Li match in the AO.
