Mattek-Sands fights back to advance


American Bethanie Mattek-Sands advanced to the second round of qualifying for Australian Open 2010 on Thursday, knocking out Julia Vakulenko of the Ukraine 2-6 6-3 6-4.

The colourful Mattek-Sands, as well known for her array of tennis outfits as she is for her on-court exploits, looked to be in trouble in the opening set as Vakulenko snatched a double break and raced to a 4-1 lead. The American struggled with her serve and was regularly distracted by the wind, which affected her ball toss.

The 26-year-old Ukrainian romped through the set in 27 minutes, sealing it with a forehand winner.

Mattek-Sands, sporting white knee-high socks, overcame her poor start in the second set. The 24-year-old clawed her way back into the match, winning the first three games.

Vakulenko did not back down, breaking Mattek-Sands’ serve in the seventh game, but immediately relinquished her advantage as the American quickly broke back. Mattek-Sands claimed the set with a deep forehand winner after 33 minutes, sending the match into a decider.

The final set was a tightly-contested battle, with both players having their chances. Vakulenko’s first double fault for the match set up a break point for Mattek-Sands, but after snatching the break at 4-3, the American called for a trainer and received treatment on her right hand. Returning on court after a five-minute injury time-out, the American looked to quickly wrap up the match, and saved three break points in the 10th and final game of the set before sealing the match with a cross-court forehand winner.

Mattek-Sands will play 13th-seeded Canadian Sharon Fichman in the next round. Fichman defeated Severine Beltrame of France 6-2 6-4 on Thursday.

The big difference is either that her serve is fading, or MEusburger is reading it better. Beth was winning 78% of points on first serve late in the first set. She's now at 64% of points won on first serve. :o

If you were not a tennis player, what would you be?I would probably be a cook. I am good with desserts. My specialty is sweet-potato pie with homemade graham cracker crust. I love cooking.

What music is on your iPod?I have some country (music) on there. Eric Church is probably one of my favourites and Lady Antebellum. I will mix in some eclectic music, but mainly country.

What is your favourite breakfast?Eggs and bacon and sausage – but not on tour, unfortunately! My husband makes scrambled eggs with mushrooms and onions and we eat extra-crispy bacon and sausage.

What is your favourite thing about the Australian Open?Everyone working for the Open has been really nice. From transportation to player services, everyone has done a really good job. As far as Melbourne goes, the shopping here is great. Chapel Street is where I want to go if I have a day off. I went to St. Kilda for dinner and my local friends have been telling me about good places to go.

What is your favourite movie?What’s the one with Will Ferrell? Step Brothers! My husband and I have seen it 25 times. We quote it often. I also love Hitman. It has the best theme music – it is amazing, with a techno-beat throughout the whole movie. I’d want it to be my soundtrack if I was ever on a mission.

What do you do to get away from tennis?My husband and I like to sleep in a lot. I personally like shopping, not always to buy, but to see what’s in and out in fashion. I like to read. I have 3-4 books with me and I read whenever I have the chance. Right now I’m reading The Lone Survivor, an autobiography about a navy seal who was the only surviving member of his team. I think they’re going to make a movie of it.

Do you have any lucky charms or superstitions?I try not to have any, otherwise you can go crazy. Some people use the same shower, same bathroom stall, it all gets too overwhelming. I definitely have my routines but nothing superstitious.

What website do you visit everyday or keep updated with?
Facebook is probably one of my favourites. I don’t update (my profile) a lot, I just see what my friends are up to and look at their photos. I also normally Google everything, like lyrics to songs I hear on the radio to find out their names.

What’s your worst habit?Being late (laughs)! Everyone who knows me should give me an extra 15 (minutes) or half an hour. Even if I say “I promise I’ll be on time”, they should at least give me another 10. I think this comes from me not liking to wait. If I get somewhere early, then I’m waiting. If I get somewhere late, then everyone’s waiting for me so we can immediately go do what we came to do. I’m not very patient.

What was your most memorable holiday?This Christmas, my three younger siblings and my parents came to Phoenix to see our new house. We had Christmas and New Years together, it was a blast! The cactuses had lights on them and we had a lighted snowman. There was a strong Christmas spirit.

Who would you most like to have over for dinner, dead or alive?Brett Favre (American football player for the Minnesota Vikings). Or I’d go out on a date with him! I am a Green Bay fan still, and when Brett retires I’ll be a Green Bay fan. But for now I am rooting for the Vikings. I just love Brett Favre. Adrian Peterson is good and Jared Allen, both are favourites (football players). My husband and I met up with T.O. (Terrell Owens, American football player) while he was here in Melbourne. He’s a big tennis fan and he’s friends with Andy (Roddick). So he was down here to support him

they came out agressive and fearless, yan really impressive and beth really kept their morale up the entire way.
WS basically served themselves out of trouble most of the time; they really weren't at their top in this match.

It was a really busy Saturday as I had to play doubles and mixed, but it was a great day, too. Zi Yan and I beat Jelena Jankovic and Shenay Perry 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 and then Bob Bryan and I got past Su-Wei Hsieh and Bruno Soares 6-2, 4-6 10-7 (super tiebreaker) in the mixed.
I'm hoping to catch a little of the NFL Playoffs on Monday (Sunday back home) because I'm a huge Brett Favre fan. I root for the Green Bay Packers, but Brett Favre is the ultimate for me. That's why I married my husband, Justin, because he looks just like him. Brett is hot ! When Justin puts on his cap, people will come to him and ask for his autograph,, thinking that he's Brett.
I like Brett's beard, the scruff, and Justin just had his beard shaved off in the Player's Spa. He had the caveman, hunting beard going to keep him warm.
I also like the way Brett goes out and plays parking lot ball, because that's how I play tennis - when the play doesn't work out, just figure something else out to do.
Jankovic and Perry played pretty well in second set and then Yan and I knew we to be aggressive in the third. We lost three games a row at love in the second and we were backing off, weren't coming in and Jelena and Shenay were at the net. I said “listen 'Yanzee' we need to be at the net. We can't be grinding from the back.” Then we stepped it up.
Shenay is awesome and one of my best friends on tour. We went to the same academy when we were 14 - Rick Macci's -- and we played doubles together a bunch and did well. If she stays healthy I want to play with her again. She has so much talent: great hands, great serve. She can rip the ball like a guy and I think she might be able to get back to where she was ranked in singles.
I was supposed to play mixed with Mike Bryan, we played together at Wimbledon, but he's a little hurt so then I got passed off to Bob. Not bad! Our opponents played with pretty funky styles. Bob and I have never played together before and he played the deuce court. All he said to me was just rip the returns and I said, I can do that. We both play doubles like that, in the moment, reactive type of tennis. I know some players spend a lot of time on plays, which can help, but we improvised well.
I love mixed because I love returning guys' serves. I've probably have played some of my best doubles in mixed. The guys pick on you because they think you are the weaker link so I'm ready for them to blast balls at me. It's especially fun playing with guys like Mike and Bob who know doubles so well and cover the court, so you don't have to worry what your partner is doing.
I'd like to see more mixed doubles played outside of the Grand Slams, but it's a lot of tennis if you are playing singles, doubles and mixed, especially if it's a one-week tournament. Maybe they could do it with smaller draws and using super tiebreakers. I like the short sets. I know a lot of players don't, but I'm a sudden death type of person. When all the chips are on the table, I like to go for it. It's more exciting because its so fast and every point is important.
A lot of people were surprised at how easily US Open champion Kim Clijsters lost 6-0, 6-1 to Nadia Petrova, with Kim saying she had no feel for the ball all match. But everyone has had days like that. But Kim plays lights out tennis: goes for the ball, takes it early and crushes it and it's either in or out. If she doesn't want to have a day like the one she did against Petrova, maybe she shouldn't go for broke all the time.
I'm so impressed by Serena Williams. She's crushing people She lives for the Slams and I can appreciate that. If you do well at the Slams, that's all anyone cares about. She almost never loses in the early rounds and everyone knows that. It gets into some players' heads. She already has a couple game advantage when she walks on court because people are aware of her record.
I'm feeling good. I think I'll have a day off tomorrow, sleep in and hope to catch some of the Viking game on Monday, where of course I'll be pulling for Brett.

Hello everyone. It's great to be back.
I was two points from qualifying in the Australian Open singles, and I almost made it through. It was a bit of a bummer, but I hadn't played competitive matches since Quebec City last September, so I was pretty happy with my level. I'm still in the doubles, though, with Zi Yan. We're seeded eighth and beat Melanie Oudin and Kirsten Flipkens on Wednesday.
Last year after Quebec, I took two months off - no fitness and no tennis. I ate ice cream every day! I needed a break and said screw everything, and I actually lost weight. I knew I could get back into shape, as it normally takes me two weeks to be fit and ready to go. I had hurt my back last year at Wimbledon, and I played too many tournaments in a row. I had hip surgery the year before and didn't give myself a chance to recover.
Even in doubles, I was feeling pain. I'm aggressive, and I like to fake and move, and at Wimbledon last year, I woke up one day and said to my husband, “I can't move my back.” I had to play that day with my partner Nadia Petrova, and I couldn't cross at all. I told her, “Nadia, you have to help me out here.”
I'm pretty stubborn and try to fight through things, but when you are at the point where you are asking yourself whether a ball is worth running for, then it's time to take a break.
I'm feeling a lot better now. I'm a little stiff, but it's a lot better than last year when it was so much worse.
Last year I was only playing at about 60 percent, and it was driving me crazy because I knew I should get to so many more balls, but I couldn't do it because I was physically limited due to my hip and back. It was a little depressing. If it's day in and day out, it wears on you.
Some of my joints in my back are fused, but that's something I've had since birth, and it's something I'll have to deal with forever. I'm not that old. I'm only 24, and I was asking my doctors last year, “Is it normal to be only 24 and feeling like a train hit me after all my matches?”
I do so much fitness and do all my therapy, and then the next day I wake up, I'm feeling like I'm 90 years old. That's why when I took the time off and didn't do anything, it felt awesome. I lost a little muscle, but I felt fabulous! I was thinking, this is how normal people feel. But I'm 100 percent now.
Now I'm practicing less, and I'm not running off court because the pounding takes a toll. I'm training different and have cut back on my tournaments and will take some breaks. Last year I played every week from Indian Wells to Wimbledon, and that was just stupid after being on the tour for six years and knowing better.
Nadia and I may play together again, but I couldn't play at the end of the year, and she decided to play some with Sam Stosur. We have a couple titles to defend together, and we've left it open. I'm playing with Zi Yan here and with Meghann Shaughnessy in Memphis, and that's as far as I've scheduled.
I'm going to play singles at the USTA Midland Challenger, and I've asked for a wild card into Memphis and hope someone tosses me a break. I actually think I'm playing really well and just need a few matches. [Mattek ended 2008 ranked No. 39].
In the off-season, I went to the USTA West Coast Training Center in Carson, Calif., and worked with former Davis Cup Captain Tom Gullikson. I love working with him, and he's really helped me with my serve and volleys. He's one of the best coaches I've ever run into. He makes practices relaxed, and he has a positive way of communicating. He likes my aggressive game, and hopefully he can come on the road with me once in awhile.
I'm willing to play Fed Cup against France in a couple of weeks, and I've talked to Captain Mary Joe Fernandez, and I'm ready to go if called upon because I've really enjoyed myself in Fed Cup.
I'm hoping that Zi and I can win some more matches here.

Hi Everybody! Today, we had a long day of two practice sessions but I think it was good and went really well. I think it was good for me to have a long day of practice and get used to the red clay. Before arriving here in Lieivn, I had not played on clay since last year’s French Open. But the tennis facility is nice and our hotel is really funky. I have enjoyed myself and the staff has been great. The hotel was definitely was not what I was expecting but very cool, There is a cemetery out back – Justin and I can see it out our window - it is a little creepy but I’m going with it! But so far it has been really good. We have had good food; good people here and I have had a great time.

After a few long days of practice, I am feeling a little stiff. The Australian Open was my first tournament back after taking a few months off with no tennis, no fitness, no therapy and I felt great. I am just feeling the aches and pains of starting competitive matches again. The hip that I had surgery on (and kept me out of the Fed Cup quarterfinal last year) is feeling great so I am excited to play this weekend.

I was able to keep my doubles up a little last year. I played doubles in Australia with Zi Yan and we did really well – we reached the quarterfinals - we are going to be playing Indian Wells and Miami together as well. I felt really good. I played in the singles qualifying draw and I felt really good, especially since they were my first matches back I was really happy with how I played. I came within a game of qualifying for the main draw, which was a little disappointing, but there are plenty of tournaments coming up and I think I have only improved since then.

Nadia Petrova and I played doubles together a lot last year and She is one of my good friends on tour. We talked a little bit in Australia, where she played doubles with Samantha Stosur. I know she wanted to focus on singles and sometimes that takes a lot out of you so doubles is kind of a second option. Hopefully we will defend some of the titles we won together last year, including Charleston and Stuttgart. Zi Yan and I have not put a full schedule together so I am open as far as partners go. Nadia and I beat the Williams sisters last year and had some good results so we are a good team as well.

But this weekend’s tie against the French team will be tough. We are playing on red clay and none of us have been practicing on it outside of the last few days but I think we can do well. We are in their country, it will be tough, and we will not have the crowd except for our cheering section. But I think our whole team is playing well. I have practiced with everyone and we are all playing really good tennis. I think they will be really good matches and we have a really good chance to win!

Fed Cup Wrap Up

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all the support during Fed Cup! I had a great time being part of the US team. For me it’s such a different experience playing for a team and your country versus always for yourself. Every match was packed at the stadium in Leivin, though we weren’t the ones being cheered for. Every once in a while I would just tell myself they were cheering for the USA and that helped me get through some tight games in my match. I was ready to play the 2nd singles on Sunday but with Mel pulling out the win, Mary Jo gave Christina a chance to get some Fed Cup experience. I wish I could have done that when I was a junior! Doubles has always been fun for me as I love being aggressive at the net. Liezel is very good at court coverage and strategy, I learn new things each time we play…

The Hotel we stayed in was very historic. There was even a signed letter from President D. Eisenhower thanking them for aiding the Americans. It was a very old building and the first thing Justin said when we got there is “this place has for sure got some ghosts flying around”.. thanks babe… on top of that there was a cemetery right outside my window, yikes! However it is most defenitely the biggest room I’ve ever had while staying in France. Great water pressure in the showers and believe it or not, a king size bed… BIG pluses in my book!

I think I can say, on behalf of the team, that we ate enough bread that week to last us a few months. All the fresh French bread and real butter we could want, everyday, with a choice of homemade jams… Pretty much the opposite of my normal diet. Good thing I only stayed there for a week!

Now, I’ll have to tell everyone about our Fed Cup tradition. At least one of the nights, after dinner, everyone plays movie Charades. For those of you who don’t know what it is, there are 2 teams and each team picks about 10 movie titles and writes them down. A person from the other team then has to pick one of the titles that you came up with and get there own team to guess the movie. Only thing is no speaking out loud and no props. Now, picture everybody playing is a super competitive person, trying to win. I was laughing so hard I was crying. Liezel, (who wasn’t on my team) is by far is the most entertaining Charades player and happen to pick the movie title Bangkok Dangerous (a movie title I picked out knowing the potential)… Let me tell you, she tried Everything to get her team to guess, and to no avail. Meanwhile my team is on the floor laughing because she is progressively turning more red and getting more mad at her team for not coming close to guessing. Hilarious! Since the first Fed Cup last year we’ve made a couple rules, the biggest being no foreign films in other languages. Its a little tough trying to act out Cuando Vuelvas a mi Lado….

Im back in Phoenix now and have 2 days until I have to leave for Memphis. Playing doubles with Meahgan Shawnissy there. Like me, she hates when people spell her name wrong!! (haha its really spelled Meghann Shaughnessy) She also lives in Scottsdale, actually pretty close to where I’m at. Though all these months we still haven’t gone out for dinner! we agreed to finally, for sure, do it in Memphis. Like me, she was fighting some injuries in previous years but feeling good so far this year. This will be our first tournament playing together and I still have to ask her what side she likes to play! She was ranked as high as #3 in the world in doubles so I’m really pumped to play and see how we do.

Well, I think thats about it for now. I have to go unpack, do laundry, then repack… plus spend a little quality time with the doggy…. Oh, and take down our Christmas tree… oops
