Indeed, the positive thing is that this will definitely be televised.

To be honest I think this is a good draw for both players. Neither player has had many wins recently. Some of you may have seen Marina play, others may not know her. Marina is just coming back from injury. She reached 49 at one point in 2008 (partly because she reached the semifinal here, beating top seed Vera Zvonareva in 3 sets on the way- of course Vera played a poor match there) and had some other good results, winning Surbiton by beating Yanina and Keothavong, and reaching the final of Birmingham, beating Yaroslava and Alona before losing to Alona's sister Katya. Then she had a run of early losses and then injury.

I think this will be a close match. Marina plays well in front of home crowds, serves strongly, volleys well, but moves rather slowly around the court. Her forehand is quite hard but she tends to chip the backhand a bit too much. If Alize serves well I think Marina will not return it very well, returning is not a strength. But I wonder how well Alize will return Marina's serve, which is probably her main weapon. Alize also needs to be able to handle the local wind which can sometimes be difficult.

I guess I would be happy with a result either way this time.

Congrats to Alize. I finally have some internet, a bit limited but internet nonetheless. I was at least able to watch the match on tv, I didn't think either player played that well but Alize was clearly slightly better. Too many errors from her forehand though. I thought Marina played an okay match and made Alize earn it though, it wasn't an easy win, as I expected she hit some nice volleys but Alize of course had the edge in rallies. I do think Alize will have to play quite a bit better against Elena V, who reached the final last year and obviously can handle the local conditions.

améliemomo
Jan 5th, 2010, 11:58 AM
agree with you howard. It was far from the best alize there, she said after the match that she felt some stress because of this is the first match in 2010, the first tournament.
She better has to step it up a little bit cause vesnina is a big hitter who has good record in that tournament.
Hope she ll be able to produce some better tennis even though its always good for confidence to win ugly.
The satisfaction is her serve(66% first serve),

keep it up alize!

Wow, what a great score for Alize. Elena . I actually thought Elena should be slight favourite here since she reached the final last year and should be familiar with local conditions. I will wait to see what happens in the rest of the Aussie season, especially AO, before I'm sure whether Alize is back or not. This 1 and 1 score sounds like she got a lot of help from Elena. When Alize is pulling out tight matches consistently I will be happier actually. Also when Alize wins a close and important fed cup match, then she will be back for sure. But first lets see what happens against Schiavone. Fran is a real test, she is always a toughie and probably one of the faves for the title.

I believe winning matches week in week out is the key to her playing better and better and then slowly getting back to top 20! If she can regain some points and confidence before clay, imagine how she will be when she gets there!!

Alizé Molik
Jan 9th, 2010, 10:37 AM
I´m not sure about this, her slum began in Barcelona (first clay tournament) last year

but i believe the slump had to do with her shoulder problem, her choke against Safina and the pressure to defend the points she had gained previous. The fact is that clay is her best surface, and the surface that suits her game the most and if she's more confident on hard courts, that will continue on clay.

améliemomo
Jan 9th, 2010, 10:48 AM
so here s the hobart draw!

(4)Alona Bondarenko UKR v Sybille Bammer AUT
Alexandra Dulgheru ROU v Alizé Cornet FRA
Sorana Cirstea ROU v Shuai Peng CHN
Kaia Kanepi EST v (7)Jie Zheng CHN

could have been worse. The most important for her is to try to play better and better.
Her 2009 year with all the slump thing made some tough damages so it is not easy to get that confidence she had back.
Aaric her slump began at Indian Wells last year where she lost to kristina barrois, her shoulder injury bothered her so much at that time. She couldnt serve I still remember.
Barcelona was just the consequences of that injury she had and who was still there, affecting her mental.
Now she s injury free so that s the most positive for now. I know she s motivated to get back where she was at her best, she ll have to fight and be patient with herself. Not doing the same mistake as last year.

Lets support her in that mission.Go Alize in Hobart!

I think this draw is ok! trly anything is possible if she is playing well.

the main positive for me is to see her smiling on the court and happy about playing. So much negativity was a big part of the issue last year.

améliemomo
Jan 9th, 2010, 11:04 AM

well like I said at the start of the year, not expecting particular results for alize in Australia. Her 2009 slump is still present in herself,it caused some serious damages who needs some time to disappear.
Good she s not putting some useless "pressure" on her before that tough first round against schiavone.
Just hope she ll give her best and fight big for the win.Focus on making her game improve in a "positive way", not like in 2009.

soooooooo close alize but in the same time the match was sooooo far to be won cause schiavone is a hell of a fighter
alize played some great tennis in the first, schiavone was annoyed about her game. Then second set, the italian started to fight more and be agressive coming to the net.
She was 4-1, alize looked tired and passive. Then she woke up and fought back to make it 4-4 and then 5-4;
This service game from schiavone was so nasty but amazingly well played
the only regret for alize is that game at 5-5 she was leading 40-15 to finally get broken.
Since then she wasnt the same anymore and schiavone cruising to the victory.

Alize must be sad right now but she s not the first player losing to schiavone, (azarenka, henin and even my amélie:(:p
she can improve in the next weeks, probably gonna play fed cup against USA.

What happened, any particular reason for the meltdown?

well she gave all she had but schiavone can be such a hell of a fighter if you let her think she has a chance.
Her service game at *4-5 was terrible for alize, physicly very tough to overcome. She seemed injured at 5-5. Then she lost this second set and seemed not that "fresh" and offensive as she was before.Schiavone saw it and her confidence came back, alize hope failed.
Well that's a tough loss today but if she has to think on the "positive", she reached a top20, top15 level in that match. She knows now that she can play that good again. That's a step to her recovery.
The next one would be to take the win next time she ll play a top20.
a good showing in fed cup could help her imo:shrug:

yeah she has to stay positive and keep believing in herself.

She gave a reaction after that loss saying she feels 2 things: first a big disappointment and the sensation she found her game back cause it was a hell of a fight. For 2 sets she found back the quality of her strokes, taking the ball early with her backhand, saying she was moving well and agressive, coming even to the net.She made good forehands, feeling good with it. "but what stay in my mind tonight(yesterday)is the loss and it hurts.I dont lose faith cause if I play like that all the year, there are no reasons that I cant beat that kind of players!"

alize is a naturally positive girl and smart. That s why I like her and cheer for her.:)

améliemomo
Feb 2nd, 2010, 05:05 PM
yes you're right kate, the fact she dropped back in the ranking gives her bad draw and the risk of playing a top seed since the first round.
Not good at all but in the same time, being that ranked(she s actually 65 now) gives her the opportunity to play qualies in big tournaments so many more matchs to play before playing a top seed then in MD.

I think the ranking is not what matters now for alize, what matters is to get back her rythme and win more than 3 matchs in a row.Go far in a tournament. For that she must get her game and confidence back.

Let s hope she ll find that during that week of fed cup, then paris tournament. She has to find her winning rythme.Good she decided to play small tournaments. Its a wise choice.

One day Alize will win a fed cup match... probably later this year. It will be good for her. To be honest, given how much the stress of Fed cup has affected her, it is probably the right decision to field Julie instead today, whether Alize is injured or not. Alize will hopefully come to the next fed cup tie with a fresher mindset, but yesterday's loss is probably still too fresh in her mind at the moment. Oudin is still slight favourite against Julie though, especially since she took that first set tiebreaker. It is hard to imagine France getting out of this tie with an overall win, but I was hoping to see Alize get her first FC win nonetheless. Next time I guess.

She must not play fed cup if this competition make her feel that bad.

She must solve that then if she feels herself "ready" then go play fed cup.

Its all about to be really determined and get some consistency in her game.
The fact she s ranked so low is a "good" thing since she ll have to play qualies of big tournaments such as IW and Miami.

She could win 3 consecutive matchs to enter the Main draw and so being there with some rythme. She absolutly needs rythme to hope making a comeback.

she did it - 6-2 6-3 over the 7th seed!
VERY solid performance from Alize today.
of course, Aleksandra played like shit, but shhhh!!!
a win is a win!
3 aces, but 6 DF's too...

ps - she looked so happy when she won, you can tell how much it means to her to play!

Alice in Wonderland hits cinemas this week, so it's the perfect time for Alizé to start her comeback with a tournament victory:rocker2:

good win for her confidence but prefer not to be too happy and think she's back in a solide way.
she looks still fragile and emotionate but happy she took her revenge over a player like wozniak who beat her at tokyo last year.

second QF for the year, strangely both were on harccourts :/ still hasn't done anything on clay this year! lol

anyway she seems to be really enjoying mexico and said that the crowd is supporting her in her matches which is giving her a lot of extra insentive also! I just hope she can keep up these consistant performances and get back to the top 50 (or at least stay in the top 100) so she can continue rebuilding her confidence and her game.

Yeah lol nothing on clay, her "favourite" surface but in fact her success on hardcourt shows that she tries to improve to become a more "complete" player.
I hope so for her, she works to have an all around game.
with her run at monterey she'll climb up back in the ranking, just hope she ll be consistent like she used to be before.
That's the most important for now.

I can't believe she blew so many match points, wish there was a stream to see what happened :(

the "trauma" is still very present in her and her choking match today showed it.:help:

Nothing to say, she needs a psychologist to solve her state of mind when she's in total control of a match and has to close it out.

Till then she s gonna lose.

Reading through GM, I didn't realise till now she had 40-0 3mps at 5-2 second set and 0-40 3mps at 5-3 second set :help:. I hope she can rebound quickly.

Very tough IW draw for her. Suarez Navarro rd 1, and Kuznetsova if she can get there. Ouch.
