not an easy draw, but it was expected since her ranking fell.

Kimiko can be tough, but Anna can get it.
I don't think Razzano lives a good moment, I'm not sure if she will survive after first round.
Wick is a tougher opponent on her session, but we all don't know how she will play after "doping" episode.

Well, "2007 Anna" can do it easily.

I'm very confident, but she fall earlier here she will have more time to make some adjustments for Hobart quali (if she don't get a wildcard)

Take title Anna!

After I watched some of the qualies today- I watched Gallovits beat Laura Granville and also watched Julia Schruff beat Kristina Barrois- I was walking around with my dad and then a metre or two to my left I noticed Anna stretching with her dad next to her. I recognised her even though she wasn't facing me at first- her long hair gives it away- but I wasn't totally sure until she turned around.

She did lots of stretches, many of them using whatever poles were around supporting the fences etc. She stretched for about 20 min while she waited for the court, and she was watching Dominika and Julia Goerges finish their practice. Julia was doing very well against Dominika, her serve was firing, but even though Julia might have been winning the practice match, I think in a real match Domi would outhustle her. Domi was going for shots and making quite a few errors and I think in a match she would make sure she kept the ball in longer. Also it was obvious that the practice was much less tiring for Domi than for Julia, so Domi would outlast her.

Then I watched Anna practice starting at about 4pm (2 hours ago) with Magdalena Rybarikova and it was obvious that Anna was striking the ball pretty well. Her groundies, particularly the forehand, had depth and placement. But there was still a sense of negativity in her attitude. Just little things like when she missed a volley and her dad went to pass a ball to her to start another rally she smacked it away with her hand. Several missed smashes from easy set ups, but overall nice hitting. Anna tried a couple of one handed slices which were less than convincing. Magda's serve was giving Anna some trouble, and Anna struggled to pass her if she came into the net. But because Magda's backhand is weaker, Anna often was in charge of the rallies. After watching qualies I could see a difference in the way the main draw players hit the ball- more racquet head speed, more depth, better placement. It seems like Magdalena and her coach can speak the same language as Anna and her dad, Russian I presume.

Well, anyway, she looked great . Both she and Magda actually, they are both in great shape. No pics unfortunately, I didn't have a camera and I'm not much of a photographer. She was wearing the same practice outfit she wore for last years AO. She looks quite tall next to her dad, who is quite tiny- I walked up right next to him to see- but of course she didn't seem tall on the court next to Magda. I wonder if her mum is tall? Anna is much taller than her dad.

I watched for most of an hour, although I also went to watch Schiavone practice a bit (Carla Suarez Navarro was also practicing, as was Shahar). I think Anna can do quite well here even though the draw is not easy. I wish she would show some more positive energy though. I think Anna is not the kind of person who can make her attitude positive unless she gets good results first, unfortunately. So hopefully she will start producing some good tennis, and then she can become more positive. She seemed to be there only with dad, but since I don't know what her mum looks like I could be wrong. Certainly dad was the only one on court with her. Anyway, it's nice to see Anna live for the first time. Hope this is the beginning of a better year.

Ah, it's a little hard to explain, but I guess I'm not really the kind of person who asks for signatures or approaches famous people. I'm not exactly shy, but somehow this isn't the kind of thing I would do. My family is going away for a week, it's a holiday that has been planned for a while, so I probably won't have internet access for a while, but we are coming back for the final since we have a couple of tickets. But I will certainly be watching Anna's progress on TV. That's why I was so pleased to see Anna there, since I was only able to go to the qualies and also the final, so there was no guarantee I would see Anna at all. The matches were over so we were about to go home when I decided to have a quick look at who was practicing, and it wasn't her, but then I noticed she was almost right next to me warming up. So we stayed to watch. If she had been in an earlier practice time I would have missed her because I was watching the matches, and if she had been any later we would have already gone home. So it was just exactly right.

Also, looking back at the picture thread, I see that her practice outfit today was not quite the same as her AO one last year, since the top was the same but she was wearing her lycra bottoms. So it was the same practice outfit as in Madrid.

urghhhhhhhhhhhhh i don't like the possible court change bit. auckland has amzing livestreams and B E T 365 has live coverage of it starting today, so every match on centre will be shown. if the matches before go long though they may move anna and then i wont be able to see her.

howard thanks for the report, lets hope anna beats kimiko and starts of the year gaining confidence. still 2 hours of practice is good, considering she admitted not practicing for some parts of last year.

ok i have a feeling we wont get to see anna in her 1st match of 2010. B E T 365 have livestream as do other sites but annas match may be moved if the schedule is running late, they only have centre court streams. normally the chance of 2 singles and a doubles match going 6+ hours is very slim, but theres rain in auckland for at least the morning so play may well be delayed thus annas match getting moved court

Very embarrassing loss. Is Anna injured?!

Let`s take a look at the match stats:
How many points did Anna win until 0-3? 1 point!
Serve: 1 Ace, 7 DFs in this short match
Break points Won: 0 of 6!
Date, 2nd Serve points Won: 87%

Absolutely pathetic, Anna.:o:tape:

We are now entering the 3rd year of Anna's slump.
Maybe it is time that Anna fans accept the reality.
This is what she is now.
She is a lower top 100 player that show flashes of brilliance...
But mostly mediocre error filled playing.
She'll look good in one match (giving her fans some hope)
But follow it up with absolute disaster.

So we Anna fans should forget the delusion of grandeur, that she'll somehow return to top 20.
Instead, we should celebrate little victories and be content...kinda like Makiri fans! ;)

qualies for hobart wont be at a high level though, she may even draw some AUS wildcard ranked nowhere. i mean kimiko may very well be playing top 30 tennis.

HowardH
Jan 5th, 2010, 10:22 AM
Anna . I finally have some internet, a bit limited but internet nonetheless. I still believe Anna has a lot of good tennis in her. I expect more from her.

I didn't get a chance to see what happened but I do know in practice on Sunday Anna was definitely not injured at all. I didn't see anything that would suggest a loss by this scoreline. The only thing was her attitude- she really needs to have a more positive energy about her on the court. She was quite relaxed warming up off court, chatting to Dominika etc, but once she started practicing the tension started to build a bit. Kimiko is tough of course, and is also unique in how she can hit the ball very early and flat, but still. I thought Anna should be slight favourite. I hope AO goes much better for her. Quite often people do badly in Auckland but then do better in AO, Auckland often has some poor showings from players. I think it is partly because it is very early in the year and also partly because it can be a bit windy sometimes. But still, no excuses, I expect more from Anna in the rest of the Aussie season, in Melbourne and the rest of the year. I'm not expecting miracles, just some decent tennis.

Also, that new profile pic of Anna is absolutely gorgeous :inlove:.

Does anybody know which was Anna`s last WTA profile pic?

qualies for hobart wont be at a high level though, she may even draw some AUS wildcard ranked nowhere. i mean kimiko may very well be playing top 30 tennis.
But at a high enough level for Anna to lose.:tape: Don`t care much about Hobart Quali draw. But I care about Anna`s AO draw! She simply has to at least reach Round 2 there! Just hope not Henin or Clijsters in Round 1...

To me Date is nothing special, only very consistent.:p
(Needless to say that it is a huge help for Date that she is completely healthy, very fit, extremely hard-working, very motivated, has very good movement/footwork and a lot of experience.)
And to me her robotic groundstrokes are ugly to watch (to put it nicely).

Btw it`s pretty sad that Anna now even has to play Quali of such small WTA tourns.:(

The Auckland start was horrible, so it can only get better...;)
I try to be positive!
