Rumors said Ivanovic and Clijsters would play. I don't think that's the case though.

I heard from one of the involved in this tournament that Wickmayer was supposed to be one of the "stars" there, but then she got banned. I guess she might still play now that her ban has been lifted. Unless she decides she's too good for us of course :p I wouldn't mind that.

It seems daft, but it is indoors (on hardcourts). The tourney website (http://www.e-bokssonyericssonopen.dk/) is up (in Danish only, so far) and shows photos of the indoor venue.

Na Li says the following about the tournament:
I saw Copenhagen on the calendar for the first time. I like visiting new places so it was natural for me to choose Copenhagen. I can't wait to see the city and Denmark.

I'm going after winning the title in Denmark. I'm looking forward to the tournament. A lot of good players are going to be there but I'm not going to give the title to Caroline because she's playing at home.

I have to win 4 matches first but I'm hoping to play in the final against Caroline. We're practicing a lot together and she's an incredibly nice girl so I can't wait till I'm going to Denmark.

Why is this an indoor tournament in the leadup to the US Open?
Simply because there's no tennis stadiums in Denmark with room for any spectators, outdoors or indoors. So they use the Farum Arena (http://www.farumarena.dk/), which is usually the homecourt for the Danish men's handball national team. Handball is the second biggest TV and spectator sport in Denmark next to football.
Tennis is a very small sport in Denmark. Badminton is a bigger sport in Denmark having had a number of Danish Olympic and World Champions and World # ranked player and having the world's biggest professional badminton club league with weekly televised matches. Denmark is by far the best badminton nation outside Asia, where the sport is very big in some countries.

TBE usually has access to the actual official lists. The people doing the tourney website frequently do not really know what is going on, but are putting together a website from a hodgepodge of info that may have been handed them by a secretary or press rep.

So the list on the website may have been from a press release based on preliminary entry data before the actual entry list was closed.

TBE is more likely to be accurate than the list on the tourney website.

There's a recent article (June 27) on tv2.dk (http://sporten.tv2.dk/tennis/article.php/id-31685708:wozniackis-succes-gavner-danmark.html) in which Tournament Director Mikkel Nissen talks about the tournament and wild cards. "There are 4 Wild cards for this tournament . We dont have access to all four of these, but the ones we do we'd like to give to Danish players to help their careers" says Mikkel Nissen. I guess he's talking about MD wild card. Maybe there are quali wc's as well?

Jorn has already said a couple of pages earlier in the thread that Karen Barbat, Malou Ejdesgaard and Mai Grage will get Wild cards, but it doesn't seems official yet. It seems very likely though, and I can't think of any other Danish players who's even in consideration for a wc?

I'd expect Wozniacki and Malou Ejdesgaard to play doubles together (if Malou gets a wc of course!).

What is the qualification size? 16, which means two rounds and 4 winners to MD?

The only other candidate would be the 2009 Danish Champion, Hanne Skak Jensen if she had not decided to suddenly retire from the tour and Fed Cup in February this year after a number of disputes with the Danish Tennis Federation when they fired the sports manger and the national team coach without hiring replacements for them, and stopping finacial support for her.

Pironkova was homeless in London as she only had booked her Hotel for a possible Round 2 win, she was not able to find a new Hotel, but with help from Bulgarian tennes Fed. she found a place to stay. The danish origaniser say she can be sure she can stay as long she plays in Copenhagen. :)

Katarina Srebotnik (SLO)
Malou Ejdesgaard (DEN)

Q-wild cards are given to:
Karen Barbat (DEN)

Srebotnik's wc is given as part of an "exchange deal" so that Grage and Barbat may get wc's for a tournament in Slovenia.

Karen Barbat is ranked much higher than Malou Ejdesgaard (257 spots higher) and is almost a year younger too. But Malou still got the only Danish MD wildcard instead of Karen. The obvious reason for this is that Malou is Caroline's best friend and Malou was gifted the only Danish MD WC by the organizers just because of this friendship. The organizer of this tournament just happens to be Nordic Sports Group which is owned by Piotr Wozniacki.

This looks like a fine example of nepotism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepotism
Nepotism is favoritism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favoritism) granted to relatives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relatives) or friends, with no regard to merit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merit).

Srebotnik's wc is given as part of an "exchange deal" so that Grage and Barbat may get wc's for a tournament in Slovenia.
Malou Ejdesgaard, Mai Grage and Karen Barbat have all received wildcards for the qualification for the WTA-tournamnet Slovenia Open (http://www.sloveniaopen.si/) next week in a deal which gave Srebotnik a MD WC for the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open. Source (http://www.e-bokssonyericssonopen.dk/nyheder/nyheder/2010/7/11/fire-danskere-med-i-dansk-wta-turnering.aspx).
This will be the first time Grage and Barbat plays a WTA-tour qualifier.
Ejdesgaard has already played one WTA-tour qualifier because she received a qualifier WC for Ponte Vedra Beach because she played doubles with Wozniacki ate that tournament.

The 4 nations who benefits most from WC exchanges are Australia, France, Great Britain and USA, because these 4 nations exchange wildcards for the 4 Grand Slams. So lower ranked players from these nations not only get the chance to get a WC at their own grand slam but also one of the other 3 grand slams.

For all the ridicule I've read in especially GM towards 'Wozniacki Open', its not that bad an entry list. Looking forward to your reports and pictures, Jorn!

Does the SEWTA have to increase the prize money here since 2 top 10 players play?

And who is the second? Only Wozniacki is a Top 10 list player here.

No because they count in group top 10 only players who finished previous year in top 10 :tape: Stupid rule

I'm a bit puzzled: According to the first Q-list - still online here (http://www.e-bokssonyericssonopen.dk/spillere/spilleroversigt.aspx) - Ana Bogdan got a Q-wildcard. But according to the latest entry lists the wild card was given to Elena Bogdan. I assume the wc is indeed given to Elena but does anyone know for sure?

In regards to TV coverage:

http://www.e-bokssonyericssonopen.dk/eventoversigt/tv-oversigt.aspx

Thats local station TV2, which probably means no live stream? :( .. also a rather patchy TV schedule and without having a PhD in TV programming, I'm guessing those TV slots will match Caro's (fingers crossed) road to the final ..

According to TF member TomEG (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?p=18191618#post18191618) Ellen Allgurin (SWE) got the 4th Q-wildcard for Danish Open. TomEG quotes a press release. Congrats Ellen, and good luck!

Regarding TV coverage: Yes, it's true that tv2's schedule is laid out to follow Caro's matches (allthough noone knows how far she'll go), but we can't really blame them. Tv2 is completely dependent on commercials, and Caro is extremely huge in Denmark tv-wise. When Eurosport showed US Open last year they got their highest share of viewers ever when Caroline played - all sports and events included (a record only to be broken when Caro played at Doha later that year)!

Tv2 will also have a daily summary from the tournament late at night called "Quiet please" (an old tradition from the days when tv2 had Wimbledon rights).

Jorn

TV2 still have the Wimbledon rights, but it just now shown on TV2 Sport, where I think also Danish Open will be shown, should Caro lose early, what we don't hope!!

I simply don't get the purpose of these one-two words and then a smily of some sort posts ... What is the idea? If you want to spam a thread could you at least put words to what you are saying so one doesn't have to guess.

Re. Na Li:

According to a Danish site (tv2.dk) one of Na Li's main reasons for choosing Copenhagen was that she hadn't seen this city on the calendar before! "I like to visit new places, so Copenhagen was an obvious choice" she said (quoting from memory). "I'm looking forward to see Copenhagen and Denmark".

Caroline - beaten twice by Na Li this year - said that she was looking forward to see Na Li (according to Caro she's "really sweet girl").

They have awarded 2 WC's and the website says that they will award the last two close to the start of the tournament, so they might give her one. I hope they won't, though.

As far as I'm concerned, she only entered qualification and therefore isn't a MD ALT.

She has won a title and is a former Top 5 player she deserves a WC to this non-event. :o

But ithink Caro will do the Draw or help... ;)

The website says that Chakvetadze will be seeded 1 in the qualification :) so I don't think she'll get a WC.

I was reading there will be a 'Caroline's Corner' in the stands? And something about creating an atmosphere like the USO and not like the boring Wimbledon crowd. Yet still be respectful and cheer for your fave and not against her opponent. Great stuff and nice ambitions.

Caroline try judge her Seeded Rivals in Farum Tourny, its :o :o they write about Carla Suarez who won't play :o

Carla Suarez Navarro

Alder: 21
