Fall Season

Stanford def. Hawaii 5-2

2. Alyssa Naferrete/Barbara Pinterova (UH) def Logan Hansen/Carolyn Mcviegh (Stan) 8-3
3. Veronica Li/Stacy Tan (Stan) def Aglae Van den Bergh/Allison Gobel(UH) 8-0

Singles
1. No. 5 Hilary Barte (Stan) def. Maraike Biglmaier (UH) 6-3, 6-2
2. No. 63 Mallory Burdette (Stan) def. Sophie Kobuch (UH) 6-2, 6-2
3. Barbara Pinterova (UH) def. Stacy Tan (Stan) 6-3, 3-6, 7-5
4. Veronica Li (Stan) def Alyssa Nafarrete (UH) 6-2, 6-1
5. Jennifer Yen (Stan) def. Natasha Zorec (UH) 6-0, 6-1
6. Mari Tadaki (UH) def. Natalie Dillon 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

The results will not count toward either team's record, however, individual results will count.

I would have liked for Hawaii's other freshman Katarina Poljakova (WTA 824) to have played and seen her results. :bounce:

With Fresno St. graduating 3 starters and Boise St.'s #3 singles from last season disappearing, it will be interesting to see if Hawaii can win the WAC this season.

Where is Hawaii's #1 singles Maraike Biglmaier? She played against Stanford in the fall.

Katarina Poljakova (WTA 824) of Hawaii may not be eligible yet.

Hmm Duke unveiled their line-up (minus Reka). Plotkin is playing No. 1 (very interesting) followed by Nze, Granson, Clayton, Gorny, and Stiles. It'll be interesting to see where they place Reka. I don't know about anyone else but Plotkin ahead of Nze?!?

I've always felt (besides last year when Cecil was No. 1) that Nze was the best player on Duke especially when Iyer was No. 1. In my opinion Iyer was the sacrificial lamb at No. 1 and that something fishy was going on, considering she didn't play that well at No. 1 and Nze did a good job at No. 2.

Something tells me I'm going to have to start a thread about "interesting" line-ups.

Nze is good, but dunno about Plotkin, I only saw her at the team photo
but her stats weren't that great.
And of course Reka should be either 1 or 2, she bagelled Mosolova (yes, even Ramos bagelled her , but still) to reach Intercollegiate Cons. Final..)

In the past Plotkin has predominantly played at the No. 3 spot. She has usually played behind Nze but ahead of Reka. She hasn't really played in two seasons due to injuries so it surprises me that she is playing at No. 1. Granted its early in the season and she may have really worked out a lot since the last time she played NCAA tennis. Then again Iyer at No. 1 was always suspicious to me.

What is the story with Reka at Duke - is she injured or just didn't play that first match of the season?

No Scharle? Maybe took the opponents too lightly. Would have expected to get something from numbers 3-5. Sounds (http://www.seminoles.com/sports/w-tennis/recaps/012310aaa.html) as though the girls got the hairdryer (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=sir-alex+hairdryer) treatment after the match.

The answer to you question is nobody has entered the most updated rankings into the results. Those rankings are taken from May 29, 2009 from last season because those are the last rankings entered in the ITA's website replacement of Collegetennisonline. At CTO everything was linked together unlike the ITA's rookie website.

South Florida likes to poach transfers. Melissa Koning transferred from Auburn, Jessica Zok is from Baylor, Lauren Shumate from Purdue and Allyn Mueller is from Ohio St. Mueller played Fall 2007 at Ohio St. but played Spring 2008 at South Florida. She was a mid-year transfer with instant eligibility the rules will no longer allow.

Nothing you couldn't find out for yourself on the web. (To be honest, that's pretty much the case for all players.) You already knew this, but you can see her domestic rankable results here (http://www2.lta.org.uk/Search/PlayerSearch/PlayerDetails.htm?Id=1-WB-25232&BSMGuid=129b2390-026c-4245-8a0e-608e2a9902e1). Was curious to see how Florida's lineup would be and if Boonstra is playing 4 for them this season, wow, that's some serious depth.

No. 2 Lauren Embree/Anastasia Revzina (UF) v. Madura Ranganathan/Paula Dinuta (UNT), 8-2
No. 3 Carolina Hitimana/Joanna Mather (UF) v. Barbora Vykydalova/Catalina Cruz (UNT), 8-6

Singles
No. 1 (15) Lauren Embree (UF) v. Irina Paraschiv (UNT), 6-2, 6-2
No. 2 (13) Allie Will (UF) v. Madura Ranganathan (UNT), 6-2, 6-1

#9 USC 6, #50 Long Beach State 1
Jan. 24 - Marks Stadium

DOUBLES
(1) Kinstler/Sanchez (USC) vs. #58 Alawi/Manasse (LBSU - 9-8 (6)
A/M were pretty good. wonder why Sanchez didn't try down the line while exchanging cross court shots? after all down the line passing shot is the beauty of doubles :)
(2) Fansler/Pulido (USC) vs. Armstrong/Dallara (LBSU) - 8-0
this combo was the best for USC
(3) Lao/Ramos (USC) vs. Cantlay/Luzar (LBSU) - 8-1
USC wins doubles point.
SINGLES
(1) #8 Maria Sanchez (USC) def. Deborah Armstrong (LBSU) - 6-2, 6-2
(2) Anais Dallara (LBSU) def. Sarah Fansler (USC) - 6-2, 6-2
(3) #39 Alison Ramos (USC) def. Jaklin Alawi (LBSU) - 6-1, 2-6, 6-2
(4) #37 Valeria Pulido (USC) def. Rachel Manasse (LBSU) - 6-3, 6-0
(5) Cristala Andrews (USC) def. Julie Luzar (LBSU) - 6-4, 6-0
(6) Lyndsay Kinstler (USC) def. Anna Jeczmionka (LBSU) - 6-2, 6-4

LBS players were all good. A LOT of rallies. Fansler was so-so but Dallara was good.
Manasse was the best power hitter of Intercollegiate at Costa Mesa but actually Pulido got
the better of her(but is Pulido a power player? nope, not that powerful). P's forehand drive form is pretty concise, like Henin's? anyway I like it :)

My MVP for USC singles is Andrews. I knew she was good, I saw her beat Pantic (last year's UCLA #4) and have a close game against Ramos at the final of Riviera Circuit, but didn't know she could send the ball wherever she wanted :worship:
Incidentally Kinstler was last yr's single #7, Andrews #8 for Trojans.
Kinstler is not powerful, can't move very well, but her shot has angles(is this the correct expression?), and she likes to use slices and drop shots frequently.

Lao and last year's #6 Entekhabi didn't play singles.

#9 USC 6, #57 UC Irvine 1

Jan. 25 - Marks Stadium

DOUBLES

(1) Kinstler/Sanchez (USC) def. Byron/Hammel (UCI) - 8-6
(2) Lao/Ramos (USC) def. Holladay/Kwan (UCI) - 8-2

(3) Bartlett/Smith (UCI) def. Andrews/Pulido (USC) - 8-7 (1)

Order of finish: 3, 1, 2

USC wins doubles point.

I was much impressed by Kinstler/Sanchez's defensive lob skills. They parried
UCI's attack with those, frustrating their offense. Nice win.
Lao/Ramos combo is fixed, they should play with each other in the remainder
of theIr school years
And Smith, she's real, gouci :) Her doubles skills were really good. Didn't
lose the driving battle against Pulido and Andrews, and net skills were superb
as well. Bartlett is of course, SW R consolation winner.
They consolidated the win by successfully attacking down the line.

SINGLES

(1) #8 Maria Sanchez (USC) def. #109 Stephanie Hammel (UCI) - 6-0, 6-4

(2) #39 Alison Ramos (USC) def. April Bisharat (UCI) - 6-1, 6-2

(3) #18 Danielle Lao (USC) def. Brooke Bartlett (UCI) - 6-3, 6-2*

(4) #37 Valeria Pulido (USC) def. Courtney Byron (UCI) - 6-1, 6-2

(5) Cristala Andrews (USC) def. Becka Kwan (UCI) - 6-2, 1-6, 6-0

(6) Kristina Smith (UCI) def. Lyndsay Kinstler (USC) - 6-2, 2-6, 6-2

Order of finish: 2, 4, 3*, 1, 5, 6

Hammel and Bisharat are quite powerful, but those UEs. Control was the
obvious problem. Those two & Bartlett, Smith, even Kwan got a set against
Andrews, they have potential. But I think LBS players were more consistent,
making less UEs.
One thing's for sure. UCI vs LBS would be pretty exciting. :)

Fansler(injured?), Entekhabi didn't play for USC.

Match Notes
Pepperdine 0-1; National ranking #40
UCLA 1-0; National ranking #12
Order of finish: Doubles (1,2); Singles (2,5,1,3)

It was a fantastic match, both team's players producing lots of fantastic plays and winners.
They just could attack the corner so easily, I suspect it's 'Aussie effect'

Colffer is a real catch. I simply don't understand how she got SO much better during the summer. The 1st game against Schnack took nearly 20 minutes, it was that intense. She can attack corner at WILL. And pretty consistent, too.

I also was quite surprised to see Zalameda play well, she didn't seem that impressive at junior tourneys and SW R. Her net play at double, and single too, was really good. Since Seguso was in a 'Pac-10 Invitational champion mode', Z's performance was all the more remarkable.
Walters have a nice drive but errors will be a problem..she needs to be more consistent.

And Rice. Montez is a good player, I remember her winning the 107th sectional single, she has a nice drive and slice, and Rice took the first set..

Oates and Pantic continued to exchange winners , but Pantic seemed to be in a fiery mode, like at the ASU game against Abdala.

Both teams seemed to have improved quite a bit, it was such a nice tennis to watch.

Imagine Bhargava playing at the no. 3 position...I think Pepperdine would have little problem retaining their WCC title this year..

Incidentally, Schnack / Colffer score..I don't think the board marked the score like that...wasn't it 6-4 or something at the 1st set? Strange..or was I too fatigued?

Jan 29, 2010 at Los Angeles, CA (Los Angeles Tennis Center)

Doubles
1. Bhargava/Zalameda (PEPP) def. Karaitiana/Kichoutkin (TULSA) 8-6
2. Erofeeva/Szatkowska (TULSA) def. Colffer/Oates (PEPP) 8-5

Singles
1. Alexandra Kichoutkin (TULSA) def. #123 Arianna Colffer (PEPP) 6-4, 6-1

I don't think K won the match by power drive. Actually Colffer was the better of the two in
sheer power. But K mixed it up later in the game, disrupting C's rhythm. C later just self destructed,
making may UEs.
2. JoAnne Karaitiana (TULSA) def. Ali Walters (PEPP) 6-1, 3-6, 6-2
3. Anastasia Erofeeva (TULSA) def. Anamika Bhargava (PEPP) 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)
4. Andrea Oates (PEPP) vs. Ewa Szatkowska (TULSA) 6-4, 2-6, 2-5, unfinished

Jan 29, 2010 at Los Angeles, CA (Los Angeles Tennis Center)

Doubles
1. #10 Remynse/Schnack (UCLA) def. Albers/Nedeltcheva (UNLV) 8-4
2. Hickey/Carling Seguso (UCLA) vs. Maskaljun/Alisa Razina (UNLV) 6-6, unfinished

Hickey at one time placed two drop shots in a row at the net right and left, making a
fantastic winner

3. #57 Pamela Montez/Pantic (UCLA) def. Hidvegi/Pavlovic (UNLV) 8-2

Singles
1. #5 Yasmin Schnack (UCLA) vs. #50 Kristina Nedeltcheva (UNLV) 7-5, 3-1, unfinished

N was like I said really good. Can send the ball deep and into the corner, very solid, well placed serve, also
can produce nice dropshots..
but later on she made too many UEs. Schnack was the more consistent one. This is just my opinion, Nedeltcheva
should play at the NCAA :)

2. #41 Andrea Remynse (UCLA) def. #44 Jana Albers (UNLV) 6-1, 6-0

R won decisively. Better power and control. At one time she used only backhand to send the ball everywhere,
it was an amazing play.

3. Noelle Hickey (UCLA) vs. Nives Pavlovic (UNLV) 4-6, 2-3, unfinished

Pavlovic's form is pretty consistent. A solid player.

4. Maya Johansson (UCLA) vs. Adrienn Hidvegi (UNLV) 2-6, 2-3, unfinished

5. Stephanie Hoffpauir (UCLA) def. Anna Maskaljun (UNLV) 6-1, 6-3

Match Notes

CONSOLATION

#60 San Diego 4, #28 LSU 1

Jan. 30, 2010 - Marks Stadium

DOUBLES

(1) Frankenberger/Wolf (LSU) def. Coupez/Demidova (USD) - 8-2

(2) Claus/Sujica (USD) def. Burns/Kantor (LSU) - 8-3

(3) Perl/Raygada (USD) def. Robinson/Wilson (LSU) - 8-4

Order of finish 1, 2, 3

San Diego wins doubles point.

SINGLES

(1) Juliette Coupez (USD) def. #120 Whitney Wolf (LSU) - 6-3, 2-6, 7-5*

Was Coupez's form always like that? I never noticed it at WCC championship
last year and this year's SW R. She is like a minor version of Petukhova, her forehand drive form is quite similar to AP's  even her slice form is like AP's..
That means she is now 'upgraded' to one of my FAVORITE players
Wolf was a solid player, makes few errors and her slice and drive is quite low, can make a winner if she wanted, but overall she was a bit conservative. Coupez was the more aggressive, repetitively aiming deep and to the corner..and Wolf's serving ritual is just :worship: She 'legs through' the ball a couple of time before serving! At one time she kindly showed me that motion '4' times in a row :hearts:

(2) Laura Claus (USD) def. Nicole Kantor (LSU) - 6-2, 6-4

Claus was the more aggressive and the better one

(3) Keri Frankenberger (LSU) vs. Maja Sujica (USD) - 5-7, 1-5 susp.

moonball clash

(4) Kaitlin Burns (LSU) def. Alexandra Demidova (USD) - 6-1, 6-2

Burns was the more aggressive

(5) Lise Marbach (USD) def. Hannah Robinson (LSU) - 6-3, 6-4

(6) Ebie Wilson (LSU) vs. Maria Raygada (USD) - 4-6, 4-5 susp.

Order of finish: 4, 2, 5, 1*

a lot of moonball in this match. Frankly, USD won't be a match against Pepperdine.
But I'll watch Coupez's game any day

#9 USC vs. #35 Auburn

Order of finish: 2, 3, 1
USC wins doubles point.

Auburn showed some unique doubles patterns when serving. I'm all for
experiment, so
:worship:

SINGLES

(1) #8 Maria Sanchez (USC) vs.#71 Fani Chifchieva (AUB) - 6-0, 5-4 susp.

Chifchieve's signature backhand drive was good as usual, but today Sanchez
was too solid. Nice power game, and made few errors. Slice was good too.
Sanchez played like a champion, in my humble opinion :worship:

(2) #38 Alison Ramos (USC) def. Myrthe Molenveld (AUB) - 6-0, 6-1

(3) #18 Danielle Lao (USC) vs. Caroline Thornton (AUB) - 6-1, 5-0 susp.

Just came back from UCLA; CAL POLY match

Schnack was LIMPING

and watched CAL POLY practice, they seemed to have fun :)

Doubles
1. Hickey/Pantez def. Blalock/Matzenauer (CP)
2. Wong/Lee (CP) def. Montez/Seguso(UCLA)
3. Hoffpauir/Johansson def. Filip/Pane (CP) 8-6

Pane's slice was pretty good. I think I saw her at WCC tourney last season..(one hand backhand?)

Singles

Order was a bit strange

1. Hickey def. Blalock 6-1, 6-1

Pretty one-sided. Dunno why B played #1, at the last game against CSUN M played #1
But anyway, doesn't matter 'cause I wanted to see the following match;

2. Remynse vs Suzie Matzenauer (CP)

M won the 1st set, and the 2nd set was 5-4 or something when rain started again.

I was impressed with M at the WAATC, and she was good today, too.
Her forehand drive is pretty concise. Doesn't make a wide arc, just using a mere flick of the wrist..
so you can't predict WHERE she will send the ball, left or right.
(ok, maybe the opponent can guess, but not me, at least )

AND her shots had angles, actually pretty spectacular.
R didn't play that bad, I think(B game?), just M was GOOD.
R tried to change the pace by mixing it up like using slice, but it was to no avail
Maybe M can aim for the Big West player of the year.

3. Montez vs Steffi Wong (CP)

M won the 1st set, and the 2nd set was pretty close (DNF)

Both were pretty aggressive, rushing to the net whenever possible. Wong was pretty good, too..

4. Johansson def. Diane Filip (CP)

I 'neglected' J so far, so tried to watch her game more this time.
I like here forehand drive form, and did she always serve like that? She has a similar ritual? as
Olivia Sanchez who won the Rancho Mirage & Laguna Miguel challenger
And J playing #6 at Indoors and now #4.. (she played #3 last season, as you all know)

5. Pantic def. Alexa Lee (CP), 7-5, 6-2 or 1

6. Hoffpauir vs Jocelyn Davis (CP)

Tried to watch H too, she's not bad. H can't even play singles normally, which means UCLA has serious depth

Wonder Schnack will be able to play next week against Stanford and California..

Matz should be # 1.. she's earned it. Blalock has no big wins this year but gets easy wins at # 1.
I say Blalock's 3 set road win over Stephanie Hammel who was ranked #109 at the time was a big win. In comparison Hammel def. Matz last season. Blalock also beat Georgia's Yvette Hyndman at the Riviera.

If Form doesn't want to consider Blalock's straight set win in the Fall over Long Beach State's #1 Anais Dallara as a big win, fine with me.

Smith at last operational, and look at the load of 3-setters
This time Abdala played #1
Wonder which position Smith will play if she plays singles..
And, this is just my opinion, I think dividing McKenna & Hein is a mistake..they were
quite good at doubles.. :)

O.K...

Had to leave when 4-1 to watch short track

And Tennisace I briefly wore Cal visor before the match to honor
the last season's Cal team

Lao/Ramos made a FANTASTIC comeback, I think from 0-6
Ramos is really a 'history girl'..:worship:
Cal duo Cossou/Siwosz made countless UEs from then on.

Pulido/Fansler had their chances against Davis/Goransson, but blew it.

Singles;

I was surprised at Sanchez. Her return seems good, she proved
that her ranking isn't a fluke.

Cossou was just more consistent than Ramos. I thought the loss
at the doubles might upset her in the singles, but nope. Ramos
just couldn't pierce through Cossou's solid defense, and made
errors or gave C chance to counterattack.

Lao had a good game against Andersson.
As always her defense and slice is just fantastic.

Pulido was the better attacker. Siwosz defaulted due to injury.

Andrews ; Davis

Davis is good. Nice power drive. Andrews just made too much
UEs.

Kinstler ; Radeva

K lacks power, and she just couldn't overcome it.

Entekhabi & Fansler didn't play singles, I think those two might be
operational for further matches..

As someone who follows the Big Ten, Baylor should have had more depth tonight as one of their top players, Jelena Stanivuk who has been out of the lineup since October due to injury returned tonight playing No. 4 and lost. Baylor is a very good team and probably has as mutch depth as any team in the country. most teams have a good No. 1 and maybe No. 2 player but a lot of teams fall off at the 3-4-5-6 postions.

Except that Northwestern did go 4-0 up, so in a sense it wasn't as close as the score indicates...;)

If Illinois had won the doubles, Pollard might have been regretting giving Abu Mushref(ova) a run-out (though she's playing again today). Interesting that Dasso chose this match to switch her top two--Fudge has beaten Murray before and I was rather expecting her to do so again.

No, I know. I guess I was commenting on the doubles point. If Illinois wins one of those two 9-8 matches in doubles, it probably would have turned the whole match around especially in singles at the top of the lineup.

Duke plays host FL this week --- what's gonna happen?

Florida is demolishing Duke, they just clinched up 4-0. Weird match on court 4 between Revzina and Granson. Granson was up 5-0 in the 1st, before losing 7-5. I believe she was up 4-1 in the second before losing 6-4. Gators rolled in doubles and got easy wins at 1 & 2 to set up Revzina's clinching match.

Final Score: Florida 7, Duke 0

everyone, did ya wait for my on-site report?

I wore a UCLA visor, though I like BOTH teams, for multiple reasons;

1. To thank for Ms. Schnack's kindness.
2. To thank UCLA for not harassing me :sobbing:
(after the incident at Cal bowl and Laguna Niguel I all the more appreciate this :bigcry:)
3. To thank for the free pizza yesterday
4. For USC

scores from the UCLA website;

#4 UCLA 4, #3 California 3
Feb 28, 2010 at Los Angeles, CA (Los Angeles Tennis Center)

Doubles
1. #11 Remynse/Schnack (UCLA) def. #13 Andersson/Juricova (CAL) 8-5

The best doubles team in the West, Remynse/Schnack? :)

2. #54 Cossou/Kasia Siwosz (CAL) def. Hickey/Nina Pantic (UCLA) 9-7

Siwosz's net defense was fantastic.

3. Davis/Goransson (CAL) def. Montez/Carling Seguso (UCLA) 8-6

UCLA Wins Doubles Point

UCLA was so buoyed by the win they put the doubles winner wrong

Singles

1. #2 Jana Juricova (CAL) def. #5 Yasmin Schnack (UCLA) 6-1, 6-2

2. #20 Marina Cossou (CAL) def. #48 Noelle Hickey (UCLA) 6-3, 6-3

Cossou, the best #2 in the West? I really came to appreciate her defense after those 2 matches (Ramos, Hickey).
She's just a wall  , her defensive lob and slice are maybe one of the best in the nation..

3. #43 Andrea Remynse (UCLA) def. #75 Mari Andersson (CAL) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Actually, I think Andersson was the better player.
But those UEs!! It gave Remynse a chance to come back, and
she didn't miss it, to her credit..

4. Pamela Montez (UCLA) def. Tayler Davis (CAL) 6-3, 7-5

Montez's condition seemed good, nice drives..but again, Davis
is a tough opponent to beat.

5. Maya Johansson (UCLA) def. Nelly Radeva (CAL) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

What if I didn't cheer for J openly? Radeva is like a mini-version of Cossou. She really improved, great defense and nice counterattack. But still J should've won the match, and she did, eventually.
By the way, one UCLA fan (or staff?) cheered for her in French :) 'Allez~'

6. #125 Stephanie Hoffpauir (UCLA) def. Annie Goransson (CAL) 6-2, 6-0

Saw Goransson for the 1st time. And I worry about Hoffpauir's back, when she serves she kinda bends it precariously

Match Notes
California 8-2; National ranking #3
UCLA 11-1; National ranking #4
Order of finish: Doubles (1,3,2); Singles (6,1,2,4,5,3)

Though UCLA won, the result shouldn't be a measure of both team's ultimate strength.
#4 Siwosz didn't play singles (of course UCLA also did not play Pantic & Seguso, but),
and de facto #2 Remynse and last year's #3 Johansson struggling against the opponents
isn't much reassuring.
And Cal also won the doubles point.

So..the game is not over. Yet. ;)

Conclusion? USC will win against UCLA !

Ya I thought about that, too. Prolly hard fought points by both doubles teams.

Seems like the gators finally woke up after 2 straight losses from the indoors few weeks back. Will & Boonstra continue to impress. Looks like Claire finally got her game together.

I thought about driving down to watch this match since I live in Atlanta, but the 4 hour drive wasn't that appetizing for me. I am saving the gas for when they play Auburn and Georgia. Also for the SEC & Nationals since they are all being played @ Athens. Yapee!

Maybe UCLA is the team to down Stanford at their home court?

Doubles proved to be crucial.
I certainly did not anticipate Lao/Ramos lose so comfortably against Hickey/Pantic

1. #4 Remynse/Schnack (UCLA) def. #36 Lyndsay Kinstler/Sanchez (USC) 8-4

USC made a comback from 1-7 or something but lost.

2. Hickey/Nina Pantic (UCLA) def. Lao/Ramos (USC) 8-4

No excuse. UCLA played WAY better. Was more aggressive..

3. Andrews/Pulido (USC) def. Montez/Carling Seguso (UCLA) 8-6

Didn't see the final moment 'cause was too hungry to watch.. ate free burger

combo!

UCLA Wins Doubles Point

Singles
1. #3 Maria Sanchez (USC) def. #5 Yasmin Schnack (UCLA) 5-7, 6-3, 6-1

My impression is that Sanchez plays like Falconi. Even twirling the racket while waiting the serve is similar
Very consistent, can change pace, can mix high ball and low ball
(don't know how to explain this ), slice is good, net play is also good, her backhand is a WEAPON..just an all around good player, I guess..

2. #21 Alison Ramos (USC) def. #37 Noelle Hickey (UCLA) 6-2, 6-3

Ramos was pretty aggressive, and accurate too. No contest.

3. #34 Andrea Remynse (UCLA) def. #22 Danielle Lao (USC) 6-4, 5-7, 6-4

Remynse's defense is good..she deserves to be the PAC-10 player of the week, overcoming the pressure and winning the decisive game 2 matches in a row..Remynse from 2-4 in the 3rd set won 4 games in a row to clinch the match..

4. Pamela Montez (UCLA) def. Sarah Fansler (USC) 6-4, 6-2

5. #91 Valeria Pulido (USC) def. #124 Stephanie Hoffpauir (UCLA) 6-7(7), 6-1, 7-5

I was surprised by Hoffpauir's serve. Pretty impressive..but Pulido later on managed to return it, and she was the more consistent one, making less errors than H.

6. Maya Johansson (UCLA) def. Cristala Andrews (USC) 7-5, 6-3

---
Now 3 players won ALL 3 matches;

#3 Remynse; def M. Burdette, Andersson, Lao
#4 Montez; def Tan, Davis, Fansler
#5Johansson def. McVeigh, Radeva, as #6, def. Andrews

Last season's #2 Remynse playing at #3 position,
and last season's #3 Johansson playing at #5,6 paid off, I guess.

For Schnack, she lost all 3 singles but won all doubles matches, so

USC proved to be the weakest in doubles..maybe expected, but not good..
they clearly need some work to do in that aspect..

Just saw some of the matches between Stanford and St. Mary's, I couldn't access the Stanford site

after some time so dunno the final score, I think Stanford won anyway..

----

Doubles #2 Barte/Yen vs Poorta/Soper

At 2-6 0-15, Poorta had a chance to make an easy point at the net. She opted

to send the ball to the corner near the net instead of smashing it. Agile Barte

made a dash, and she drove the ball cross-court.. and Poorta literally lied down

to escape the ball  (and the ball went out! St. Mary's won the pt )

==--

Singles #1 Barte vs Isip

Webcam wasn't working at my computer -_-

----

Singles #2 Tan vs Poorta

Tan won I think 6-4, 6-0

Christ, Tan is GOOD. Nice drives, can attack the corner at will,

made countless winners against Poorta..net play isn't as good, but still.

----

Singles #3 Burdette vs Chikhikvishvili

C was demolishing B in the 1st 2 games, and later the webcam wasn't working on my computer
-_-

Later found out B won the match, 6-2, 6-4 or something

====

Singles #4 McVeigh vs Soper

I remember Soper as a fighter, running all over the court with Pepperdine's Liles  at the #3

singles at the WCC championship final last year.

Just saw her play against McVeigh via Stanford webcam.

Twirling the racket,

Imitating Wolf by doing the 'leg through' - nice try, but not as natural as Ms. Wolf  -

Letting go of the racket,

Advancing quite near to the 'service' line at McVeigh's 2nd serve..

What an entertaining match :haha:

This time she seemed to play more leisurely, using all-court, could send the ball to

the corner, and her slice was also good..her style was a bit contrastive to McVeigh's, who

was more aggressive..

She eventually won the game, I think 7-5 , 6-4 or something.

No. 14 Stanford 5, No. 5 California 2
Hellman Tennis Complex | Berkeley, Calif.
Saturday, March 6, 2010

Doubles

1. No. 2 Barte/Burdette (STAN) def. No. 13 Andersson/Juricova (CAL) 8-6

As Burdette Remarked after the Intercollegiate final, the STAN duo does play

like Lady Vols. I was pretty impressed with Burdette's net play, it was pretty good..

2. No. 27 Burdette/Tan (STAN) def. No. 38 Cossou/Siwosz (CAL) 8-6

Burdette's net play wasn't impressive, but still STAN won.

3. Li/McVeigh (STAN) def. Davis/Goransson (CAL) 8-6

Order of finish: 2, 1*, 3 (Stanford wins doubles point)

Singles

1. No. 9 Hilary Barte (STAN) def. No. 2 Jana Juricova (CAL) 6-3, 6-3

J made too many errors.

2. No. 17 Marina Cossou (CAL) def. No. 44 Lindsay Burdette (STAN) 6-4, 6-4

When rallying Burdette was no match for Cossou, precision-wise.

But B got 8 games against Cossou, that's better record than Hickey (6) or

Ramos (4).

Her net play, I think, is the answer.

Actually her net approach timing was pretty good, methink, but she didn't

WIN those net points much, she made way too many errors. Shaky serve didn't help either.

3. No. 56 Mari Andersson (CAL) def. No. 63 Stacey Tan (STAN) 6-4, 6-2

1st set was pretty tight, and after that Tan kinda self-destructed. Andersson

was pretty solid today.

4. No. 28 Mallory Burdette (STAN) def. Kasia Siwosz (CAL) 6-0, 6-1

Burdette is good. Didn't watch the match after first 4 games or something.

5. No. 95 Carolyn McVeigh (STAN) def. Tayler Davis (CAL) 7-5, 3-6, 6-4

6. Veronica Li (STAN) def. Nelly Radeva (CAL) 6-1, 4-6, 6-2

McVeigh & Li were more aggressive than their opponents.

This #5&6 wins might mean much for the team.

Still, Landsman did pretty good..just found out that after losing to Schnack 7-6(1), 7-6(3) at SW R,

she had 14 matches winning streak until the loss against Dy. And she today lost to Elisabeth Fournier of Washington State.

Ha! i was there watching the UNC vs UF match! (driving 700 miles in the span of 24 hrs is NOT FUN, but worth it)

I got to see a lot of great tennis.

The doubles were really close - seemed like Will & Boonstra were in total control going up 5-1 but then the UNC girls came back and tied it up. The gators finally closed it out at the end.

In singles -- I'll just highlight what I saw
-Embree seemed to have changed her playing style from aggressive to defensive from last I saw of her. She was totally the one running around retrieving the attacks left and right from Tsang (who has a really out of this world grunt that made the stadium laughed, like a cat being skinned). It seemed to work well for her.

Nasty seemed to hit the ball harder, played great in singles, but missed a lot in doubles, thus the loss.

Hitimana strikes the ball really well - hard, solid - but wow her body language needs some work! We are talking about up 5-3 in the second set and she was there lumping and sighing and walking slow...

Mather's backhand is crazy good. She had like 5 match points but missed it all and lost that second set. Since the team's already won, they decided to default the match to rest her injury. Her mother was there, who I met there, she was like Jo is really sad!

Boonstra was just classic Boonstra - big serves and huge forehands and net game.

Agree with UF moving to #2 and if Northwestern loses against North Caroline, Duke or Baylor over the next two weeks, the Gators should get to #1 where they should end the year. I can't imagine anyone taking them down outdoors.........

How much does anyone attribute Duke's win vs ND today to outdoors vs. indoors? I think that is a pretty big deal to make that 1st match outdoor transition.........

It's hard to understand, but apparently the difference between playing indoor and outdoor matters a great deal. I see UF go far in the NCAA's, but anything can happen. I would love to see it with my own eyes if it happened in Athens, Ga (Yay! I'll be there. I live in Atlanta. It's like an hour and a half away).

Sorry, its a Racquet. I misunderstood your post. I agree that Florida looks to be the toughest team in the country and it wouldn't surprise me if they win the rest of their matches all the way through the NCAA's. I watched them at the Indoor Championships and they are so solid from top to bottom in both singles and doubles.

UCI you are one bitter guy or gal - always thinking someone is trying to pick a fight or undermine you..in response to your list, my only comment was that it matters not only who you have lost to, but also who you have beaten. I do agree that some of those teams were/are ranked a bit higher than they will finish, but 50% of the teams in the poll are ranked higher than they will finish, so I could pick a dozen teams at random and half a dozen of them are likely "overrated".

I actually do agree with most of your 3/2 list and think that most of your picks will indeed finish lower than they were ranked on 3/2 - my only point is that I think you are focusing too much on who said teams had lost to rather than who they had beaten (some of those teams had some very solid wins in addition to their shaky losses). In any case, the only ranking that really matters it the final one, and this will definitely sort itself out like it does every year.

I know the following comment is only going to stir the pot further, but I do find it ironic that UCI is ranked 62 in spite of their only ranked win being #75 Cal Poly...and having just lost to unranked UCSB at home (and winning only 8 games total at lines 4-6!), some might say that UCI is a bit overrated as well.

1)
a) Increase penalty for losing.. equally as for winning. If you lose to # 1 then there is no decrease. If you lose to # 200 you should get moved backward.

Both the team and the singles and doubles rankings do have a penalty for losing.

See the list of frequently asked questions available from the rankings page on the ITA website, http://www.itatennis.com/Assets/ITA_Rankings_FAQs.pdf

The formula is defined well at the start of the questions in relation to the singles and doubles rankings, but it is described as the same for the team rankings later in the document. It describes points from your best "x" wins divided by the SUM of the number of matches being counted + points from ALL losses.

It is unclear how many points are added to your denominator for losses to teams at any particular ranking since only ITA coaches can get those numbers, but there clearly is a penalty for losing that is probably much higher if you lose to #200 than if you lose to #1.

That said, I do agree with the sentiment that the system is very kind to teams that simply get a big win or two, especially if that win is partially due to an injury. It definitely seems that you are better off scheduling 15 top 50 opponents and hoping you find a way to win a couple of those matches.

(2) Pulido/Ramos (USC) def. Chan/Smith (UW) - 8-5

(3) Fansler/Kinstler (USC) def. Malovic/Xu (UW) - 8-6

USC wins doubles point.
Order of finish: 2, 3, 1

Winning #1 against Ardies/Dy is TREMENDOUS.

And, Fansler/Kinstler were initially trailing but caught up and made

an upset! :yeah: Winning dbls pt proved to be crucial.

SINGLES

(1) #3 Maria Sanchez (USC) def. #15 Venise Chan (UW) - 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2

Chan was just more consistent than S.

Later on, Sanchez became more aggressive, really going for the shots,

and it paid off. Her power drives distrupted Chan's defense and opened up the

court for an easy finish. And as an anti-climax Chan had a cramp from the start

of 3rd set. Credit to her, she refused to default and fought to the end.

(2) #6 Denise Dy (UW) def. #20 Alison Ramos (USC) - 6-0, 6-0

Dy is not a power player, just more consistent than Ramos. R made countless

UEs after rallies. This year Ramos's matches are extreme, she always finishes the match

first, whether winning or losing

(3) #32 Danielle Lao (USC) def. Lina Xu (UW) - 6-0, 6-4

At last Lao won! :clap2: She gestured a hurray when she won the match :haha:

(4) #82 Valeria Pulido (USC) def. Samantha Smith (UW) - 6-0, 6-0

Pulido was just better. Nice angles.

(5) Sarah Fansler (USC) def. Joyce Ardies (UW) - 7-5, 0-6, 7-5*

Fansler was aggressive, in that she often came to the net. It paid off, I guess.

(6) Aleksandra Malovic (UW) def. Leyla Entekhabi (USC) - 6-1, 6-2

I dunno, E doesn't seem like her former self. Lacked power.

Order of finish: 2, 4, 3, 6, 5*, 1

"closer" than i expected. UF changed their #2 and #3 doubles lineups, perhaps some tension between Nasty and Lauren? Well, proved to work very well. Lauren & Jo took down #22 tennessee pretty easily. Lauren really has stepped it up since the Indoors. She's gone 11 wins straight @ #1!

Why stop when last season I correctly predicted 9 out of the last 10 at-larges BEFORE the final rankings came out.

Nobody in top 30 is a lock until it's all said and done...
Don't you mean nobody outside the top 30. :o

ND did lose to Baylor. I would have to say it was because Baylor is the #2 team in the country, not because of playing outside. Baylor is just a good team with great singles players.
The only other losses ND has this spring are to 2 other top teams. Don't be so sure that ND can't play outside. That is a pretty bold statement. ND has remained in the top of the rankings this spring, so they must be doing something right both inside and out. Just wanted to state my opinion. Have a good day!

Nice serve & slice, attacking the backhand side and finishing

No. 75 San Diego State 5, No. 66 San Diego 2
Monday, April 19, 2010
Aztec Tennis Center; San Diego, Calif.

DOUBLES
1. Juliette Coupez/Maja Sujica (USD) def. Roxanne Ellison/Sierra Ellison (SDSU), 8-5

A cetrain Ellison (dunno which :sobbing: )'s serve motion was pretty unique. I think she bounced the ball with the

racket HEAD. Isn't it difficult to do that??

2. Julia Trunk/Julia Wais (SDSU) def. Alexandra Demidova/Marite Raygada (USD), 8-2
3. Alicia Aguilar/Olivia Colman (SDSU) def. Laura Claus/Justine Perl (USD), 8-3 Order of Finish: 3, 2*, 1
* - clinched doubles point

SINGLES
1. No. 56 Julia Trunk (SDSU) def. Juliette Coupez (USD), 6-2, 6-7, 6-0

At last saw Trunk again! She's not that powerful but quite solid. BH is solid, can move well (that means defence is also good),

doesn't make many UEs. Coupez was the more powerful, but she just made too many errors, sprayed

the ball all over..she also tried to emulate Vera Z's tantrum..

Ah, Trunk has a glaring weakness..DFs  And she did some Hantuchova (you know,

conversing with the wall  )

2. No. 91 Alicia Aguilar (SDSU) def. Laura Claus (USD), 2-6, 7-5, 6-4

Pretty similar to #1. Claus was more powerful, but Aguilar's control was better

3. Julia Wais (SDSU) def. Maja Sujica (USD), 6-3, 6-0
4. Sierra Ellison (SDSU) def. Lise Marbach, 6-2, 6-2
5. Alexandra Demidova (USD) def. Emma Cioffi (SDSU), 7-6, 6-2
6. Marite Raygada (USD) def. Olivia Colman (SDSU), 6-1, 6-2
Order of Finish: 3, 4, 6, 5, 2*, 1

The best thing about SDSU...FREE Gatorade!! Court format was kinda like Barnes Tennis Center. No baseline view,

but you can see it through the shade anyway from the baseline. I thought there might be more people since this is a match

between the cross-town rivals, but meh. LBS had more..

P.S. If you plan to visit there, be there ON TIME. 'Cause there is NO day permit for visitors, it's $1/hr.

So don't come earlier, as I did. -_- Studied Ancient Greek grammar exercises and read some Tasso

at the library to make it worth the time :silly:

ROS seemed good, too. But Ellis was just more powerful..

That 11th game at the 3rd set...P just couldn't hold..

and P's profile;

"The part of the game of tennis that I like the most: is playing in the HEAT, dripping sweat, and watching as my opponents slowly deteriorate...I won, mentally. "

Admirable (or sadistic) mindset

2. (#49) Nazari Urbina (TAMU) def. def. (#63) Vanja Corovic (UT), 6-3, 6-0

Wow. Is Urbina that good? Corovic was last year's #1..

3. (#122) Morgan Frank (TAMU) def. (#56) Krista Damico (UT), 7-6 (2), 6-1

Can't believe this too

4. Sarah Lancaster (UT) def. Sheri Olivier (TAMU), 7-5, 6-2
5. Maggie Mello (UT) def. Lauren Santacroce (TAMU), 4-6, 6-3, 6-1

Mello was ball bashing as usual  Funny, on the bh side she usually sliced away!

6. Caroline Larsson (UT) def. Christi Liles (TAMU), 6-2, 6-4

Slick play as usual for Larsson

Doubles (Texas wins the point)
1. (#51) Corovic/Ellis (UT) def. (#29) Potgieter/Urbina (TAMU), 8-6
2. Amanda Craddock/Damico (UT) def. Stephanie Davidson/Frank (TAMU), 8-4
3. Lancaster/Larsson (UT) def. Liles/Olivier (TAMU), 8-3

Order of finish
Doubles: 3, 2, 1
Singles: 2, 3, 4, 6, 5*, 1
*Clinched match

Team records
Texas A&M: 11-8, 6-3 Big 12
Texas: 13-4, 8-1

I think Texas is the most under-rated team in the country and think they could beat on a neutral court the five teams ranked right above them. They could make some noise in NCAA's.

Is that permanent? I thought she might go to ASU after trying pro or something. Too bad if that's not it.

oh, I see. thx.

USC dual season recap;

Singles lower positions collapsed due to injury, illness, etc. --> if recovered Entekhabi and Andrews will kick ass again in #5 & 6.

Nevertheless Sanchez & Ramos improved.

Doubles, meh. Maybe as expected. Couldn't overcome the loss of Fink & Niculescu. --> Christian is coming. So problem solved.

Revenged Washington the loss at NCAA 2ND round last season.

Also revenged ASU the loss they sustained earlier. Still, Hannah James and ASU managed to inflict maybe an irrecoverable loss by that win

at their home. USC playing NCAA at home is now almost impossible, I reckon, and if a miracle doesn't happen, a trip to Georgia seems..

I know Texas added Aeriel and Vanja (back) but wasn't Larsson playing No. 2 singles last year and now is at No. 6?

Cako's scholie turned into James

Cako permanently pro..

I am surprised at that since Cako really hasn't impressed me that much at the pro level.

Are you sure about Cako? Hannah James did received her scholarship, but Nadia Abdala is graduating so its an additional scholarship. I havent read anything on Cako becoming a pro.

Larsson played #3, 4, at best #2, as far as I know. #2 was Damico.

Corovic, Damico, Larsson, Craddock.. they defeated Pepperdine 4-1 in the NCAA 1st rd and in turn lost 1-4 to Cal last season..

from UT archive;

2009 Big 12 Championships - Final
Baylor 4, Texas 1
Doubles - Order of Finish: 3, 2
1 Corovic/Milic (UT) vs. Broosova/Borsanyi (BU) - 6-6, susp.
2 Ormond/Stanivuk (BU) def. Craddock/Damico (UT) - 8-6
3 Secerbegovic/Siwosz (BU) def. Davison/Larsson (UT) - 8-5
Singles - Order of Finish: 5, 1, 2, 3,
1 Vanja Corovic (UT) def. Taylor Ormond (BU) - 6-3, 6-2
2 Lenka Broosova (BU) def. Krista Damico (UT) - 6-0, 6-1
3 Csilla Borsanyi (BU) def. Caroline Larsson (UT) - 6-3, 6-1
4 Jelena Stanivuk (BU) vs. Maggie Mello (UT) - 6-4, 4-5, susp.
5 Nina Secerbegovic (BU) def. Amanda Craddock (UT) - 6-0, 6-2
6 Kasia Siwosz (BU) vs. Sarah Lancaster (UT) - 6-2, 1-1, susp.

it seems like a similar case to UCLA's Johansson, who also played #3 last season and is now playing #5,6

When are these young women going to realize you don't turn down a chance when offered a $150,000-$200,000+ scholarship to get a good education and play some great college tennis. The smart ones are playing the Pros after they get their degree.

Wasn't she temporarily kicked off the team or something like that (for bad attitude)? If I remember correctly Megan Alexander was going to take Corovic's scholarship had she not come back this year. I guess they must have worked something out.

As for SEC Tourney

UF blitzes through USC, who upset UGA the day before, 4-0. This one was played indoors because of weather, but the gators all won in easy two sets.

TEN played OLE Miss and it was an epic in its own right. TEN prevailed 4-3 in the end.

The finals of UF vs TEN will be interesting because the last time the two played, the doubles were tightly contested, and four of the six matches all went to 3 sets. It was 6-1 for UF but it was much closer than that.

Gators win the SEC Tournament, 4-1 over Tennessee. Grabbed the doubles point with wins at 2 and 3, and took singles at 2, 3 and 6, UT got a win at 4 singles. The other matches had UF up a set and a break at 1, starting a 3rd set on court 5. Great job, ladies. On to the NCAA.

Congrats to GT. They pulled out the doubles point and the two three-setters. Should take a sizable leap from their current ranking of #20.
