View Full Version : Who will get fired?

gouci
Nov 24th, 2009, 08:28 PM
Some schools like to sign incoming players when they seem to have no open scholarships and will MAKE room for the new recruits later.

In these situations that begs the question of who will get fired after the season? :tape:

David Jaime,

1. Amalia Herring is a walk-on. Tip: You can tell someone is a walk-on when they don't sign a L.O.I. or they are not mentioned in the release about new recruits. Herring didn't indicate signing a L.O.I. in her TRN profile and she wasn't mentioned in the Kristie Ahn signing release.

2. I list the rankings of the incoming players to partially make sure they are better than the person in red I think is most likely to get axed. In Stanford's case Jennifer Yen who was a 5 star ranking high of 31 is better than Amalia Herring who was an unrated 56.

3. Nice try with Stanford and in the future keep looking out for more teams that over sign their allotment of 8 scholarship players. :yeah:

davidjaime

that is what i was thinking till i came up with this article
"Amelia Herring Makes Her Way to Stanford"

"Stanford recently recruited senior Amelia Herring for a full tennis scholarship. Following a wrist injury, Herring could not play for most of her junior year making this a surprising turn of events. In terms of being recruited, junior year is the most important, as colleges begin looking for prospective team members. Herring managed to pull through and get her scholarship confirmed only a few weeks ago."

here is the full article.

davidjaime the article was a nice find. :worship:
But I won't buy Herring as a scholarship player until I see a release from Stanford or Herring is in the line-up for Pac 10 play. Local articles are susceptible to misinformation.

Fournier is is on a soccer scholarshipA soccer scholarship seems to make the most sense but a TRN article on Fournier says otherwise. The number of players that needs to get fired from Texas Tech goes back up to 2.

"But, since tennis is offering me a full scholarship, and is allowing me the opportunity to try and play soccer in the fall, I can't be selfish about it. It would make no sense to continue to play soccer at the expense of the tennis team if I am not considered an important or impact player."
- Haley Fournier

In my opinion, "to get fired" has such a very negative slant. What you are realizing through your tracking is an imbalance in # players vs. the traditional roster of 8 scholarship players. You may or may not know about pending transfers that haven't been made public, or players coming on board which have academic scholarships not taking up an athletic scholarship. If you know all that other information definitively, I'll be surprised but if you do, I'll just be further impressed by how connected you are. Otherwise, you are making conclusions that aren't based on complete information.

Even if you do know all, it must be that you want to be like Mr. Trump and just enjoy telling these kids they are on the block, "you're fired"! Not saying the work you are doing isn't interesting, but why don't you just note teams in that situation and call it a "roster imbalance" and leave it at that vs using the "fired" word? You do great work, not denying that. Just not sure why you are choosing to be so negative to these kids.

I agree. It's the same with the 21 year-old freshmen thread. Obviously everyone understands that you are against the older players in college tennis, but it isn't the kid's fault that she is 21 and someone has offered her a scholarship. If you're going to complain about it, rather than have a McCarthy-era blacklist, why don't you take it up with the NCAA?

Form remember when you posted this. I went by what you posted.
Regards CP roster... I'm guessing someone got their scholarship cut. Probably Pane who was a horrendous addition from Santa Clara anyway. Markhoff has been there for years so he wouldn't go there... but Pane was a bust. Davis played 20 matches at # 6... she's earned her money.

If a team has all 8 scholarships like LSU does, for womens tennis it has to be either a full scholarship or nothing. The only teams that can divide scholarships are teams that are not fully funded (have less than 8) or mens teams (that only have 4.5 or less).

The above list is correct IF those teams are using the full amount of scholarships available to them. I'm not sure the numbers for the rest of them but for womens tennis it is 8 full scholarships.

If a womens tennis team is using less than 8 (usually to try and cut costs), then they can divide them and give partial scholarships like men's tennis does.

Also, I don't know that everyone knows tennis has 8. Lots of folks on this forum know a lot about college tennis but lots come to learn (like me).

10sE...Sorry, maybe I read your post wrong! I guess I thought most people here knew the number of scholarships the women's college D-1 programs had to offer. I am sure there are exceptions with some of the schools with budget constraints!
I listed the other college sports just to show how few of them there are that award full scholarships or none and how lucky female tennis players are if they’re fortunate to receive a tennis scholarship to be one of the very few sports out there where you can get your college education paid 100%!

Men
Football
Basketball

Women
Basketball

This list is correct. it's known as HEAD COUNT sports meaning they count the number of athletes receiving support. In these sports it is very difficult to compete unless you offer FULL scholarships because other schools will offer full scholarships. It's sort of an all or nothing in most cases for good players.

All other sports (20+ sports) are EQUIVALENCY sports where you get a pot of money equivalent to a number (baseball is 11.7, men's tennis is 4.5 I believe)... and that money is spread amongst unlimited number. Basically you are like a General Manager trying to attract players within a salary cap. Some fulls, some partials of varying sizes, some walk ons.

There is a big CULTURE difference between the two in each sport. In HEAD COUNT SPORTS, the student and their parents basically expect a full scholarship (except for a few elite academic schools). Otherwise they move on to the next best offer.

In EQUIVALENCY SPORTS, the goal is as much supports as possible COMBINED with a calculation as to how much mom/dad/loans will have to come up with to cover the difference.

The student athletes literally grow up with different mental expectations depending on the situation.

Transferring this question from the Big West chat... seems to follow the questions above:

Quote: Originally Posted by 2nd_serve

Sure

Private schools: Cost of going to school is the same for everyone.

Public schools: Cost of going to school (in CA particularly) varies for state residents or out of state/international students. It's typically twice the cost for an out of state or international student. It recently changed from 1 to 3+ years to establish residency for an out of state student also... so that becomes almost impossible to do within a 4 year window.

CSU - Now on avg $17-19K per year with housing for full scholarship of a CA player. $27-$30K for out of state or international.
UC - Now on avg $25-28K per year with housing for full scholarship of a CA player. $35K+ for out of state or international.

How do internationals difference paid:

Varies... some schools have been alloted X amount to spread amongst their various teams where the fee difference is wavied. Others have high criteria like a super high HS GPA or super high SAT score to be considered for a fee difference waiver. Of course the tricky part with the super high criteria is what happens when a student athlete has good GPA but falls below the threshold in their final exams? Many countries have exit exams that are 80% of their final marks so if you bomb the finals the GPA tanks.

Others require the coach to go out and fundraise the difference in international or out of state costs; SD State and LB fall in this category I've heard. And others may opt to have no internationals if that fundraising requirement is in place; don't want to do the work or give up camp money.

Lots of options

But in most cases at public schools, international and out of state students are about 2x as expensive as in state students.

Of course, most private schools are 2x to 4x more expensive than public schools anyway.

Lots of different models.

You ever been to Louisville? Seen where campus is? Ever had to live there for a year (weather, location, culture... whatever)...

Student-athletes leave for many reasons; not just because of the coach.

Is it still Mark Beckham? I know he was there in 2007 so this upcoming year would be at least his 5th season.

She has transferred and is going to be a graduate student and play her final year of eligibility at a lower level school. I am not sure which school but I believe it is one of the historically black colleges in Louisiana.

UMBC head tennis coach Rob Hubbard announced today that freshman Isabel Aldunate and graduate student Shalini Sahoo will compete for the Retrievers in the 2011-12 academic year.

...

Sahoo competed for two seasons at TCU, producing an outstanding senior campaign in 2010-11. She compiled a record of 16-10 overall and 14-7 during spring matches, including winning streaks of five and six matches. Her Horned Frog teammates honored Sahoo with the Most Improved Player Award.

The New Dehli, India native has experienced success on the international level, reaching high positions of No. 623 in singles and No. 891 in doubles in the WTF [sic] world rankings in the spring of 2009. She earned her degree in sociology, with a minor in anthropology at TCU and will pursue a master’s degree in applied sociology at UMBC.

Gouci: Nelly Ciolkowski is graduating this May and will seek to play her senior year at another university as a graduate student. If an athlete graduates and still has eligibility left, they can transfer if their new school offers a graduate degree that their old school does not.
