Nov 23rd, 2009, 08:44 PM
Nadia will start her 2010 season in Briisbane.

Petrova is Brisbane’s latest star recruit

Sunday 22 November 2009

Nadia Petrova is the latest star signing to confirm she will begin the 2010 season at the Brisbane International this January.

The top 20 player will join a very strong women’s line-up playing alongside Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic, Dinara Safina and Jelena Dokic in what is shaping up to be a blockbuster event.

Announcing her attendance today, Petrova said she was looking forward to experiencing her first Brisbane International.

“I am so excited to be travelling to Brisbane for the first time. I have played on the Gold Coast five times and I loved the weather, the atmosphere and the culture in Queensland. It is a great time to be in Australia,” Petrova said.

“I cannot wait to see this new event and experience the facilities and courts, which I am told are very similar to those at the Australian Open.

“My aim in January is to get some tough match play in the lead up to the Australian Open and the Brisbane International is going to be ideal for that.

“I am also hoping I will also get the opportunity to see some of the many sights that Brisbane has to offer when I am not on court.”

Brisbane International Tournament Director Steve Ayles said the tournament is shaping up to be even bigger and better in its second year.

“The Brisbane International is going from strength to strength,” Ayles said.

“Petrova is another jewel to add to the already strong field expected in January.

“It will be a pleasure to welcome Petrova to the Queensland Tennis Centre for the first time and I have no doubt she will provide some strong competition to the other seeded players.”

Petrova has won 27 WTA titles, nine in singles and eighteen in doubles and has been a finalist on 20 other occasions in singles and doubles.

The 27 year old won her singles titles in Cincinnati and Quebec in 2008, Paris in 2007, Doha, Amelia Island, Charleston, Berlin and Stuttgart in 2006 and in Linz in 2005. She has also won four ITF tournaments in Makarsk, Hwar, Dubrovnik and Tbilisi.

The Russian reached a career-high singles ranking of No.3 in May 2006 and No.3 in doubles in March 2005.

She has reached the semifinals of the French Open in 2003 and 2005 and in doubles, won the year-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in 2004 with Meghann Shaughnessy.

Currently ranked No.20 in singles and No.16 in doubles, Petrova was born in Moscow. Her parents were both athletes with her father Viktor a leading hammer thrower and her mother Nadezhda Ilyina won a bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the 400 metre relay.

The final cut off for player entries into the Brisbane International is today, Sunday 22 November, with a full player list expected to be announced next week.

Nadia is the "lucky" player that will face Hénin in first match Brisbane

Henin vs. [2] Petrova

Should I post the rest of the draw?

Jan 4th, 2010, 07:44 AM
5-7, 5-7. Bad luck. She can win most of the other first round opponents with this form today.:(

Jan 4th, 2010, 12:53 PM
Nadia really did play pretty well, just a few too many errors at important times. If she can continue playing this well though I think she's going to have a good season. It was also nice to hear that she was enjoying herself during the match.

Jan 4th, 2010, 07:17 PM
Well, as expected a loss in 2 sets. Horrible draw.
7 Aces, 1 DF.
Henin, 1st serve points won: 90% (27 of 30)!
Nadia played quite well, just too many UEs on important moments of the match (for example some easy returns hit into the net because Nadia didn`t move her feet).
Henin will win Brisbane.
Hope in AO draw Henin stays far away from Nadia. It`s about time the luck is on Nadia`s side.

Jan 4th, 2010, 10:40 PM

About Melbourne, she should finally win her first singles match of 2010 but I'm not commenting anything further because obviously she was again unlucky with the draw :(

Jan 17th, 2010, 09:56 AM
Playing doubles with Stosur  Very good team,I think, let's see how they do.

Nadia is feeling the pressure against Justine. Lost the first set 6-7, then blew a 2 break lead in set 2, now on serve

Jan 26th, 2010, 02:04 AM
Nadia lost 67 57. Beating Kim Sveta and Justine in a row was too much

Jan 26th, 2010, 02:15 AM
Nadia was 2 breaks up at 3-0 in second set. That was not enough to win the set  Nevertheless, it was a very good tournament for Nadia

QF at AO, great!

Something interesting about Nadia`s serve at AO:
Women's Ace Leaders at AO 2010 are ...
1. 65 Aces (in 7 matches): S.Williams
2. 29 Aces (in 5 matches): N.Petrova
3. 27 Aces (in 7 matches): J.Henin
3. 27 Aces (in 4 matches): S.Stosur
