DOHA, March 4 (Reuters) - Amelie Mauresmo failed to regain the world number one spot when Nadia Petrova beat her 6-3 7-5 in the Qatar Open final on Saturday. France's Mauresmo, winner of three tournaments this year, could have overtaken top-ranked Belgian Kim Clijsters, who was inactive through injury this week, in Monday's WTA rankings if she had beaten the Russian.

Second-seeded world number eight Petrova took the final on her first match point after one and three quarter hours for her second career title.

Mar 4th, 2006, 04:25 PM
So impressive.

Indeed. Victory over Amelie considering her current form is a very good achievement.

Mar 4th, 2006, 04:59 PM
2 second big title so far this year. Well done Nadia :D :bounce:

Mar 6th, 2006, 08:38 PM

Mar 6th, 2006, 09:04 PM
Im happy for Nadia shes never been quite able to cut it in the past against the top players!!

Mar 18th, 2006, 03:07 PM
Elena Dementieva has already won a Tier I this year in Tokyo.
Nadia Petrova won the last WTA event, a Tier II in Doha.
Now Dementieva plays Sharapova in the Indian Wells final.
2006 feels a little like 2004.

Mar 18th, 2006, 03:12 PM
I hope Elena can take another Tier I.

She needs these kinds of wins to back her belief when it comes to the year's upcoming GS.

Maria will be tough, but as its a final, I believe Maria may be a little tight. Elena will be too exhausted to be nervous, and will just smack her groundies. It should be an entertaining match. :)

Mar 18th, 2006, 05:33 PM
What's for sure the Indian Wells Tier 1 title will added.

that 1st title proved very crucial last fall, thanx Flaky Patty

now if only Anna could have played Patty in one of her finals .......... it could have all been very different.

May 14th, 2006, 05:02 PM
The thing I've learned about tennis is how much the mental aspect takes over.

I would watch Nadia and think - how she can not have better results?

I'm really encouraged by this. Nadia skipped the KC last fall to play a Tier IV, desperate to win a title, any title.
And she lost that week, in Thailand.

Now, she is very close to world #1.

May 15th, 2006, 02:55 AM
We're having a new Nadia :hearts: :hearts:
4 titles so far this year, that's simply incredible

Russia won the Davis Cup 3-2 over Argentina on Sunday as Marat Safin defeated Jose Acasuso 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to hand the nation a second trophy after a defeat of France in 2002.

Safin was mobbed by his overjoyed teammates even before he could reach the net to shake hands with Acasuso as the Argentine put a forehand into the net after saving one match point.

The tie was the fourth of the past six finals of the worldwide team competition to reach a deciding fifth rubber. Argentina also lost a final a quarter of a century ago in Cincinnati against the US.

Safin, a two-time Grand Slam winner and former number 1 who has struggled with knee problems, was thrown into the breach after David Nalbandia upset Nikolay Davydenko 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to start the final day.

Safin showed his intentions to seal the tie as he swept up the opening set in 30 minutes, emphasizing his determination with 16 aces during the contest lasting nearly three hours.

"It was a tough fifth match," said the winner. "I was expecting Nikolay to win, but unfortunately he couldn't make it.

"Our captain decided to put me in the final match. I was struggling with my knees and my toes due to this (carpet) surface.

"There was a lot of pressure for me, but it all came out pretty well."

Acasuso fought back to level as he lifted the second set, only to see Safin regain the momentum as he lifted the third. The fourth went into a tiebreaker, with Safin reaching a 5-2 lead.

Acasuso recovered to 4-5 but a Safin service winner gave the Russian two match points to the thunderous cheers of a capacity crowd waving blue-red and white Russian flags.

As the celebrations began, non-playing Mikhail Youzhny led the jubilation. Former Russian president Boris Yeltsin, the nation's number 1 ticket holder, quickly got into the act, along with Safin's mother - his first coach - rushing onto court to hug her son.

"We tried to play our best game," Safin said. "Acasuo was playing well form the baseline. But my experience made the difference today.

"The crowd enjoyed it, and I'm pretty happy."

Safin called this Davis Cup title "the most valuable" compared to the one the side lifted over France four years ago.

Well done Anna. :) She has just blown by her childhood friend Maria Kirilenko in the rankings and as tennis players in the last year and that has caught me by surprise. I think Anna is stronger mentally and physically than Makiri is and that's why Anna has had an easier time than Little Masha has making it to the next level as tennis players.

I just went through all 27 pages of this thread. SO many predictions, especially by the cat, were right, especially that Masha would be the next Russian to win another Slam.

It was so nice seeing Elena having the highest quality tournament victory.

3 years ago, seeing Anna defeat RG champion Nastya at USO, and 2 years ago watching her lose to Lena D. in 3rd round USO in a 3rd set tiebreaker, could I think that just 2 years later our two great players will be pretty much done and Anna would be the best Russia-based player? Truly amazing and unexpected..

Even though Russian tennis players in total didn't have a good 2008 Australian Open, I hope Maria Sharapova winning the women's Australian Open singles title is the first great moment in a great year of Russian tennis. I think the Russina's could have a very good year and I hope the Russian men do well but it will be hard for them because there are more good Russian women tennis players than there are good Russian men's tennis players. And the depth is much deeper in men's tennis making success for the Russian men harder to come by.

Jan 26th, 2008, 04:18 AM
I agree, my feral friend, that's a good sign.. We'll win Fed Cup, and a couple of Grand Slams.. maybe Davis Cup..

Mar 1st, 2008, 02:38 AM
By tomorrow afternoon either Sveta will be just a hair behind Nastya ( 2 Tier I against 2 ), or Lena D. will be just a bit behind Sveta, lso on quality..

6 big titles in this season played so far. We got 4 . I can feel another monstrous leap year from our babes, 4 our 6 Super Bigs of this year. I think it will be 3 Slams and Olympics.. I don't think we'll win French. And I am not sure I really care about YEC.

Mar 1st, 2008, 04:46 AM
Melbourne: Sharapova.
Paris [i]: Chakvetadze.
Doha: Sharapova.
Dubai: Kuznetsova/Dementieva.

It's been a very good start to 2008 for the WTA Russian's. :) But I think the 2008 season can be great if a few of the Russina's outside the top 10 stay healthy, find their games and have good years. And I'm talking specifically about Petrova, Zvonareva, Safina and Kirilenko. I have no doubt that if the top 4 Russina's Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Chakvetadze and Dementieva stay healthy they will have very good years. But I think they will need some help from some of their lower ranked compatriots in order to rack up the titles and for this to be a great year for female Russian tennis.
