Pitu's gonna give a press conference on Tuesday announcing her retirement from pro tennis. Sad to see her go like this, I guess just like Clarisa Fernndez, injuries took the best of her.

Such a waste of talent :( Could've made it to the big leagues if she wasn't such a headcase.

Pitu is 26, so she wasn't really around in the 90s. She started her pro career in 2001. :p

Always sad to see someone's career ruined by injuries. I never thought she would be a world beater, but she was talented and could've been a consistent top 50 player. I wish her well in her post tennis life.

Dont worry. Comebacks are en vogue. She will probably anounce her comeback in 2011.

Well she won 3 itf's in 1999 so technically she was also a nineties player ;)

it's a shame she's retiring but i guess after over 10 years of playing and failing to stay consistently in top 100 she's had enough. she's had some good runs over the years, tho it's a shame she didn't have much success outside the MM events. i will think of her as another player who didnt fulfil her potential

Thanks for those stats fredbdx. Looked like she might've turned the corner last year when she reached the WTA final in Bogota, but then injuries took over again. Only one top 30 victory in her career though, for some reason I thought she had bigger wins than that.

Also she won two junior slams in 2000 right? Not that it means a lot (hello Kirsten Flipkens).

Quite expected but so sadly for us :sobbing:
She is really talented, with good shots from the baseline and a great touch at the net, so sad that she is gone so young

I would like to know what will she do after tennis but best of luck in your future Mary Emily

We love you :hearts:

Well I dont spend my days sifting thru ITF results I pretty much just focus on my fav(s) and the results of girls in the top 75 or so. I dont even bother with the MM tournaments half the time these days. Seriously I dont know how some of these players who rarely play on the main tour and get little or no air time are known by so many. Good luck to her anyway.

It is okey,it seems that you dont know that she beat Dokic in two sets in Indian Wells 2005 (is MM tournament  )
She also play against your fav Maria K in Estoril this year (well that is MM tournament but if you follow your fav you should at least read that result)

That why I find sorprising that you have never heard of her

Shame injuries played such a large part in stalling Salerni's career...Having seen her play a number of times, I would agree with those who said she was probably never going to be a "top" player, but she certainly could have made at least the to 50, if not a bit higher for a while. Unfortunately it seems like every time she would get on a bit of a roll again, she would get injured and miss significant time. :(

Hope she enjoys whatever is next for her :)

She won Wimbledon JUNIORS in 2000, I think that alone proves she's not a 90's player.

Pitu  Wonderful junior player, had the chance to see her run in Quebec City in 2004 and she was so close to the finals and possibly the title. Naturally talented, though not top 10 quality, but really a underachieving career cause of all the injuries. Nice girl too.

Hope all the best for her :)

Pitu

Too often injured, like Clarisa Fernandez.:(

Great junior career: Singles titles at 2000 Wimbledon and 2000 US Open!:yeah:

Probably her best career win was at Hobart in 2004: Pitu def Kuznetsova 6-1 6-1 !:worship:
I remember I was completely shocked by this result.
After this came nothing...

Another career highlight was the Final of Bogota in 2008.:)
After this nothing...

Really a weird career, mainly because of injuries.

Any comments from Pitu about her retirement?
