By Barry Wood

BALI, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Second seed Samantha Stosur fired down a WTA Tour record 208kph serve but a 7-6 7-5 defeat by Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez eliminated the Australian from the Tournament of Champions on Friday. Stosur’s thunderbolt eclipsed the previous best of 207.6 kph held by Venus Williams. The WTA said the record was pending verification."

Really? :tears: Why do I remember it being in the 220s? :(
I am pretty sure that serve vs Ashley wasn't Vee's fastest though. She thought so too, but appeared she had hit a faster one before.

Oh no it's definetely a new record. Venus Williams hit a 128 mph one (206km/h). Brenda still holds the absolute female record at 130mph, even though it's not a maindraw match.

I thought Venus hit 207.6 or something in 2009? A match against Pennetta if I'm not mistaken?

Another player serving above 200 km/h regardless.

So far:

V. Williams
S. Williams
Big Bad Brenda
ALG
Ivanovic
Hradecka
Stosur

Lisicki is very very close.

If you include 200km/h, you can add Kristina Mladenovic to that list. (http://www.rolandgarros.com/fr_FR/scores/extrastats/speed_ws.html)

Does the WTA keep/update these serve speed stats online somewhere? The only place I have ever found them is in a page of the media guide, which means we have to wait until the end of the year to see if the records were officially sanctioned.

Karlovic lost the match where he broke ace record for one match :tape:

Karlovic lost the match where he broke ace record for one match :tape:

Karlovic has broken the record three times (75 aces, 55, 51) and has lost each time. So did Johansson (51) when he broke it in 2005. Serving that many aces does not at all mean that they should win the match because it only means they are being made to play so many points in their service games in the first place. Next highest on the list is Federer with 50 aces in 2009's Wimbledon Final, which he very well could have lost.

According to Lisicki's blog from Luxembourg, she said that her fastest serve was 127 mph (204,4 km/h), but it wasn't officially clocked. Her fastest officially clocked serve was 125 mph (201,2 km/h).
http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/blog/sabines-blog-20091025_2257191_1831310

So she served about 200 km/h as well.

Do you think that a one fastest serve (maybe not even an ace) is enough to win a match ? :help::spit:

Congrats to Sam :yeah:

Yeah and wasn't Roddick's record 42 or something against Kolschreiber and he still lost that.
Lol if tennis went by aces/serve speed, then guys like Roddick and Karlovic shouldn't lose.

It's one serve, dumbass. Did you think one lightning fast serve is going to win a match? If a match is won by serving alone, Karlovic would never have lost anything.

I think Brenda actually lost that match, and she was going for the record since she was trailing in the second set and didn't really hope to win the match. Or so I read in an interview.
