Well 2009 has ended and next year is the start of a new decade, 2010-2019.

What are some of the amazing matches played?

Who is the most notable player of this era?

What are some of the most amazing moments?

Was it a good or weak era?

Discuss. :worship:

I can't believe it's already freakin' 2010! Where has the time gone...

I think several years ahead this era will be looked back on as being very strong.
Serena Slam is probably the most notable accomplishment IMO...
Other notables...
Equal prize money
Serena's existence (Regaining #1 after 5+yr gap, 11 slams, most prize money earned by a female athlete)
Vee's dominance at Wimby
JuJu's dominance at FO
Numerous rivalries, particularly of the early 2000s

Fall of Hingis.
Capriati's fairy tale.
Serena Slam.
Belgian Revolution.
Russian Revolution.
#1 rank losing credibility.
Two epic chokers becoming multiple GS winners.
Coming out of closet retirement stories.
The death of the women's tennis.

Elena's decision to trim her bangs will surely go down as the darkest moment of the decade.

THE matches that stands out to me most emotionally are
Hingis def. Serena AO QF 2001
Capriati def. Hingis AO F 2002
Venus def. Davenport Wimby F 2005
:sobbing: I love women's tennis.
My fav is Jelena Dokic but these matches stood out to me most, especially growing up as a kid as a Hingis fan.
Fav Dokic match would have to be Dokic def. Kleybanova this year. Anyone who was at RLA that night would agree.

I can't believe it's been 10 years already, since the Hingis-Davenport-Williams dramatic encounters. So many memories, I'm trying to put them all together but it's tougher than I thought :hearts:

The overwhelming and defining story of the decade has been Venus & Serena, followed by Kim & Justine, but the stand-out moments for me were:

Capriati's comeback and rivalry with Serena.
Hingis falling, rising and falling again.
The Russian Revolution led by Sharapova.
Davenport's enduring presence at the top, but no Slams
Mauresmo finally having her moment.
The brief run at the top of the Serbian Sisters.

All about Williams. They are the only players to really and truly span their success throughout the entire decade. Kudos to them.

Serena Slam
Venus @ Wimby, especially in 2005 and 35 match win streak inclusive of Olympic gold
Martina- "oh how the mighty have fallen"
Juju hand incident
Everything about Maria, the new and improved Kournikova

Great decade! Best ever!

It's silly to think this decade in any way represents the fall of women's tennis. The previous decades of tennis were usually demonstrations of utter dominance by two or three persons. Moreover, no one really took the women's game seriously. Women tennis players weren't really considered athletes until the likes of Navratilova. They were considered more to be glorified housewives who played tennis rather than baking upside-down cakes (Clearly this is an overstatement).

Go WTA!

So many memories and great moments in a decade of tennis.

How appropriate it is that arguably the most notable moment happened slap bang in the middle of the decade. :worship:

I tend to prefer the half of the decade that preceded that Wimbledon final though. Incredible rivalries and so many great players playing at the same time. Best seasons for me were 2001 and 2005, both just had fantastic storylines within them.

Shame to say that the quality has gone down these last couple of years but obviously they've had their moments too.

I hope we'll have a similar start to the new decade as we did the last one. :bounce: (with Lindsay dominating again :hearts:)

Really cannot believe it's a new decade though. 2004/05 still feels so recent.

Probably when people look back at this decade 100 years from now, the #1 thing it will be remembered for is being the decade when future Greatest Player of All Time and 25-time GS champion Caroline Wozniacki reached her first GS Final :)

It will also be remembered as the decade when Sharapova won 3 GS titles while playing right-handed, which will fascinate people in the future who will know her primarily from her even more impressive later career as a lefty :)

And yeah, I guess a few people may remember this decade for the Williams sisters as well

Martina Hingis

No 1 for a further 2 years, (after 1997-1999)

No one else has come close and she defeated all who did before injury ruled her out. Came back in 2006 and defeated all the new ones, excluding Serena, who she never played on return.

The Best matches/Memories:

Justine vs capriati (us open semi 2003)
Kim vs Justine (final FO 2003, Beglium rules from then)
Kim wins (finally) a GS in US open, and another one after coming back.
Justine vs Myskina (olympics semi final what a match)
Justine vs sharapova YEC 2007
Sharapova vs Serena williams (wimbledon 2004)
Serena williams vs dementieva (the first match worth after retirement henin )

venus vs davenpoort (2005 FINAL wimbledon)
Kim vs Serena (us open 2009)

the players that made me not necessarily like them but respect them beside Henin in this decade are:
Venus Williams (For her talent and fair play)
Kim Clijsters(nice and professinal)
Ave Maria!(her peak is one of the best in tour)
Mauresmo (back hand and similarity with henin's game but luck of self believe)
Pierce ( Peak is one of the best as well)
Davenpoort ( consistent and fair play)
