Fair enough, although I don't agree. Many players use obsenities on court such as Davenport, Seles, Capriati, Navritlova and I've heard Safina and Dementieva use profane language on the court in russian. Maybe not after a match, but I am sure you get my drift. To each its own I guess, but I don't have a problem with profane language on the court if you are talking to yourself. Now, when you are directing it at someone else, then I have a problem with it. ;)

Beat her in the final, Elena. If you beat Svetlana. :o

Good performance from Serena, she played well. If Elena had been more on point, she could have done more with what Serena gave her.

I thought Elena played a meek first set, but did better in the second, much better. A few loose errors at bad times, but some of her winners, and serves/aces, were exceptional.

Very solid by Serena. Lacklustre by Elena.

Elena had a purple patch (beautiful shotmaking, even 3 aces in the span of 2 service games) starting from that marathon third game in the second set, where she eventually got the break back to trail by only 1-2, but even after that purple patch ended, she found herself at 4-all only. (To Serena's credit, it was her great serving that allowed her to hang in there while Elena was hitting her zone for those 6 games.) Whereupon Serena duly held and broke. That last game was a disaster by Elena.

I don't see the big deal with what she shouted at the end of the match.
She really wanted the match and let it show. Better that than dontgiveadamnoutsidetheslamsrena.

She gave Venus a hand there. Now all Venus needs is to beat Sveta, and hope Sveta beats Elena.
The scores don't even matter.

Well, I will take some solace in the fact that Elena elicited either a "Finally" OR a "Fuck yeah" reaction from Serena.

What a disappointment after finally beating Venus. But given Lena's track record, not really too surprising. Hopefully she'll do better against Sveta.

Just when I'd started to hope, too. Being a Lena fan is just a fucking beatdown. She's still cute with bangs, though.

I don't care if she makes the semis. I want Serena to win. I guess this is what is confusing me. Yesterday there were those who wanted Serena to tank to Venus so Venus could have a better shot, today they wanted Serena to win so Venus could have a better shot and I'm scratching my head at better shot at what? And what about Serena? The end for me is Serena winning it all but if Serena has to give Venus a chance is this a chance at winning or just getting far enough and then Venus losing? What is the deal?

Superlative hitting from Serena. Her backhand was the best i've seen it for some time actually. Really catapulting her body-weight into the shot which accentuates uber-power!

I was impressed by Serena against Kuznetsova, but her level completely elevated today. So much purpose and control, and the willingness to change the direction of the ball at violent speed. I often feel her problems with Dementieva at times, is that she tries to go CC with her for far too long spells of play. Dementieva is a different player when she's foced WAY behind the baseline. To be fair, everyone has that disdavantage when Serena combines depth and accuracy. It's just the best shot-making on tour when it all synchs together.

Dementieva to be fair took more risks in the second, and at least tried to up the pace enough to earn break-points, but her timing was erratic. There were several 'gimme' second serves that she just spurned completely.

Nice showcase from Serena. Real nice.

Well that's your opinion, I like both, I do love Serena a lot more, but It would be nice if Venus could get some extra ranking points.

im a secret fan of serena (keep that to yourself) and for one of the very few times this year was really enjoying match, but her reaction was not good. i could never imagine fed doing that. i also think you would like it if elena had been the one to shout that after a win over serena, i know i wouldn't.

it tainted what was a great performance.

i remember that crazy reaction that Elena had when she won in Sydney... like she'd just won the lottery. It was amusing but it didn't bother me so i'm not sure why anyone would make a big deal out of this

Serena Williams reaches semifinals in Doha
By MATTIAS KAREN, AP Sports Writer

Qatar (AP)—Serena Williams became the first player to clinch a spot in the semifinals of the WTA Sony Ericsson Championships after defeating Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-4 Thursday for her third straight win in the round-robin tournament.

Williams was broken to trail 2-1 in the first set but won seven straight games to take control of the match. She moved the Russian around the court with her powerful ground strokes.

She converted her third match point when Dementieva sent the ball into the net, then pumped her fist and yelled “Finally!”

Williams secured the year-end No. 1 ranking after Dinara Safina pulled out with a back injury. Williams failed to get out of the round-robin phase of the season-ending tournament the last two years.

“I’m happy to finally do well,” she said.

The win also means Venus Williams will remain in the tournament. She needs to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova in Thursday’s late match to advance.

Dementieva, who rallied from a set down to beat Venus Williams in their opening match, didn’t find her stride until trailing 2-0 in the second set. The encounter failed to live up to their epic three-set Wimbledon semifinal—billed by many as the best women’s match of the year.

Dementieva won the longest game of the match after converting her fifth break point to make it 2-1, and the set went with serve until the last game.

Earlier, Caroline Wozniacki overcame severe leg cramps and a tenacious Vera Zvonareva to win 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

Wozniacki needed two medical time-outs to treat her cramping left thigh in the third set and collapsed to the court sobbing and clutching both legs after netting a forehand at 30-15 in the last game. But she got back up and clinched the win when Zvonareva netted a forehand on the third.

“I have absolutely no idea how I pulled it through, but I’m very happy about it,” Wozniacki said.

It was the U.S. Open finalist’s second win in the tournament, putting her on the verge of the semifinals.

Wozniacki said her leg started cramping at 3-1 in the third set.

“From there, it just got worse and worse,” she said. “I’m feeling better now. I got to cool down, getting some massage. … I’m going to do everything tonight to recover to be ready for tomorrow.”

Zvonareva replaced Safina as an alternate and had a dismal start, losing her first four service games. At 3-2 in the second set, she needed a five-minute medical time-out to treat a bleeding nose, and the match looked headed for a quick finish after she lost the next two games at love.

However, Wozniacki allowed her opponent back into the match as Zvonareva won the next three games and saved two match points when serving at 6-5—the first thanks to a Hawkeye challenge after a line judge ruled that her forehand had gone wide.

The lucrative Doha tournament is the last WTA Tour event of the season for the eight top-ranked women, with the top two players from each group advancing to the semifinals. The winner earns $1.55 million depending on her results in the group phase, where each win is worth $100,000.

I like that there are good umpires at this event,Welch and Kader are for the most part fair and mature in their decisions.I think the players choose the umpires they like for this event, not the young overzealous refs that are quick to make mistakes, like that umpire during the mens USA Open final and the Swede who presided over THE INFAMOUS SEMI at the Open should never be allowed at big events.

Great match from Serena. She continues what is actually a pretty impressive record at the YEC and is into another semi. When I see focus like this, I just can't understand why some people (even some of her so-called fans) say Serena doesn't care about non-slam events. This match, and her performances all week, confirm to me that she is prepared to give her all in every match she plays. Enough with this dontcareaboutslamsrena nonsense, and enough with trying to use it as an excuse.

Don't get what the fuss is about the reaction at the end. She was clearly thrilled to win the match as she would have been extremely disappointed to lose to Elena in Sydney and Canada this year. Though some of the reactions in here were quite strange. Serena continues to be "gangsta" -- what's that supposed to mean? I only really see that written about her actually.

Yeah I got a good laugh when I read this too. What did he say about her @ the US Open? I didn't read that part.

Great stuff from Serena though. Clearly the #1 player right now. It will be a great 2010 with the Belgians challenging again! Throw in Venus, and I bet between the four of them they win the Grand Slams...I don't care in what order.

Nicely done. The fist pump at the end really should shut up all haters who say that Serena doesn't care. Clearly beating Elena D again meant a lot to Serena.

second set shows the difference between Serena and Elena. Elena had a similar game in the 1st set when she lost a long game after she just broke Serena..Elena goes off the boiler and loses 6 games in a row. Serena just shrugs it off and keeps it on serve and then strikes in the last game. Champs are born.

And that crystal meth quote is hilarious. Somebody should start a Serena' classic quotes thread, if they haven't already.

What the hell does she mean by "finally"?

It was a quick two-setter.

Did she expect to win in 30 minutes? Finally she played Demented the way she used to, back when she owned her

Serena has a hard time keeping it up though, though I can't blame her for it. During most of the second Elena was allowed to play more of her game because Serena stepped down a bit. How Serena played the first set was so brilliant...Elena looked completely useless, it got into her head, and then she really did become useless at the end of the set.

I haven't seen Serena step into so many backhands or even forehands in quite some time, especially against Elena. She played better than she did in AO.

Will you do a noble thing and apologise then sammy01 to Serena and her fans.
That obsessive devil has no shame. All he does is bash Serena and her fans. He didn't even care about the facts before he started spreading LIES. :o

Like I said, I think it's cool Lena's gone from being Rena's bitch to being her best rival.

And she hasn't said anything blonde since the rivalry heated up.

Let's just enjoy what's the best rivalry in the WTA right now. And hope that Lena brings back the bangs. And makes the semis, so we have a chance at a rematch. That would be a great way to cap what has been a great year for both.

My overwhelming impression from this match: Serena smacks it hard

That was just the warm up for the final.

Well, I have to call :bs: on this comment. As a fan who watches all her matches, it is a fact Serena does not give her all in every match she plays outside of slams. Her level of play and intensity is starkly different, hence she obviously does not care about tournaments outside of the slams. The YEC is another major tournament, with big, big prize money and a lot of prestige which adds to her legacy. At this point in Serena's career, it is obvious she only cares about her legacy and winning smaller tournaments outside of slams and the YEC, except for Miami (largest non-slam tournament) are just not that important to her. It's not an excuse.

it's not an excuse by her fans when even SERENA said so in her book (4 slams and a few tier Is):weirdo: serena just said she felt more pumped this year than last year for yec but yec is a big tournie...but it's dave so what's new in trying to prove something about a player he dislikes and knows nothing about
