GMT Factor 2009

http://i32.tinypic.com/234rva.png

The GMT Factor is an Exhibition Tournament where, instead of the public voting for the graphic they like the most, selected judges will be the ones to decide which graphic will be eliminated per round.

RULES
Format
The GMT Factor's format will be an elimination round process, where the number of rounds will be decided upon the commitments received from the participants. Participants only have to do one graphic (most likely a free graphic).

Each graphic will then be given to the manager, and the manager will forward the graphics to the judges. The judges will then put their comments up in the thread. After each graphic has been commented on, the judges will then decide which graphics are the worst from each group. From these two, the voters will then vote for the graphic they like better, with the graphic maker with the least votes getting eliminated.

Graphic makers will not be known to the judges and the public until the end of every round.

Tasks
Themes will be given per round, with tasks to be given to the participants with regards to the theme. Each participant will have different tasks from each other. [e.g. Theme= Sweets| Likely Tasks will be Chocolate, Candy Canes, Mint, etc.]

Commitments to close on Friday, September 18, 11:00am GMT

Round 1 Presentation
Group Talent

Folks, here are the graphics of Group Talent :bigclap:

http://i34.tinypic.com/27xkklz.jpg
reetard says:
The first thing I see is that there are no shadows in the frame or outside, also dont really like the text. The red apple looks kinda weird with a wall and frame.... The colouring is nice, also the blue looks really nice with the gold of the frame.

Droolv. says:
I really like this graphic. In particular, the colouring is amazing, the background the maker has chosen is stunning and the photo in the frame has been executed well. The text suits the graphic, has been placed well and is a good colour. The apple is a nice touch however I dislike the white line; I find it unnecessary. The word "Desperate" is lost in the background which is a shame. The frame would also look better if it had a shadow.

Poiree says:
This is a very good graphic. I love the background, the text is added very nicely too and the picture in the frame is very well executed. Having said that, the picture on the left is not sharp enough and some of the edges on it are a bit rough. The apple is a nice detail too, but I don't really like the path going from it to Felicity's legs, especially the part around her dress where the path seems to stop in a slightly sloppy way.

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.67/10

http://i33.tinypic.com/5mio0i.jpg
reetard says:
This is probably my facourite graphic. It looks really nice, like a proper poster. Also it is something different. the font goes really well with the whole look. ...Could've done with a bit more detail and a sub0text. Also its it would have looked better if it was less saturated.

Droolv. says:
Personally I donít like the 1980s look so Iím not a fan of this graphic at all. The graphic has used too much saturation and how the font clashes with the pink skin. This graphic is very low quality due to the amount of saturation used which doesnít make it easy on the eye. Using the two lines (on the right of the graphic) was a poor decision as they used donít Ďfit iní with the rest of the graphic.

Poiree says:
Is this Jennifer Aniston or Maria Sharapova? Even though I am not a fan of such graphics, I must say I think this maker reached the effect she/he was going for. Kinda 80s look in my opinion and the 80s are not my favourite decade. Another thing I don't like about this graphic is the red text with pink skin. I personally would never combine red and pink, on a graphic as well as on my outfit, living space maybe even in my plate... The 2 lines on the side and bottom seem out of the whole picture too. So if you like the 80s, this is definitely a hit, if not a big miss.

AVERAGE SCORE: 5

We'll be right back with the other three graphics! ;)

reetard says:
A lot of effort has gone into it. The composition and idea is quite nice. ...She hasn't been cut properly, and has slightly too much surface blur

Droolv. says:
This graphic has promising ideas but it turns out a mess. It is way too Ďbusyí, making it uneasy on the eye. The small details of this graphic (heart, star ect) has been lost in the clutter of this graphic which is shame as the heart would have looked great. The main picture is too blurred but has been extracted well (in particular the hair). In summary this graphic has good ideas but has been poorly executed.

Poiree says:
I was quite disappointed with this graphic. There is too much of everything. Everything being pictures, fancy details such as hearts and stars and way too much pink for my liking. If I see well, there is again a combination of red (the text and a part on the left) and pink (everywhere else). As I said this combination is a big no, no for me. The main pic in focus is blurred too. Now believe or not I do have something positive to say about this one too: I think the main pic is very well extracted from the background, which judging on the hair, seems to have been very hard.

AVERAGE SCORE: 4.5

http://i33.tinypic.com/2egfok9.png
reetard says:
The colours look really ncie together. Black, brown and red are very complimentary to each other. It looks compact. ...Could do with a bit more of sharpening. The two Tina's seem to merge together, would be nice if you could actually differentiate between them. Also I dont know if it is because of the photo or the cutting methods, but her shoulders look really square.

Droolv. says:
This is one of my favourite graphics of the round. I really like the simple colouring that has been used and how all the colours complement each other. The lines in the background suit the graphic but should be equal on both sides of the graphic. The colour of the text is good; however the text in white should be moved further down. The graphic could also do with a little more sharpening.

Poiree says:
A very neat graphic indeed. Nothing too special but very nicely executed. Blending is done quite nicely (the only complaint I have is that Tina's shoulder on one picture seems to smack her chin on the other) and the text is fine. I like the lines in the background, though it would be better if they were equal on both sides. Most people will say I am a nitpick, but there seems to be a little black something in the bottom right corner that makes the graphic worse to my eyes.

AVERAGE SCORE: 7.3

http://i25.tinypic.com/111qs1z.png
reetard says:
The composition is good, the blending is good and the colouring is good too. Its nice and crisp. ...For a big graphic, it does lack the oomph. Dont really like the overuse of red colour.

Droolv. says:
I love how the colour of red has been emphasized in this graphic. The red background suits the photos in the middle while the brushes/textures that overlap onto the photos was a good idea. The brown stripes at the top and bottom of the centre graphic compliments the red background. The fonts are placed well and are of good colours but itís disappointing the Americaís face isnít the same colour in both photos.

Poiree says:
Another well done graphic. The standard in GMT seems to get higher all the time. The red background is done well, though it might be a tad too big compared to the center part with the pictures. The center of the graphic is simple, but nice. It would be better if her face had the same colour on both pics though. The text here is done nicely too. I also like the little circle in the bottom right corner, but I am not too sure about the red line in the same part of the graphic.

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.83

Round 1 Presentation
Group Idol

But, first, a statement from Poiree: "Before I start, I must say the graphics in the previous group were a bit higher standard than these here."

Folks, here are the graphics of Group Idol :bigclap:

http://i34.tinypic.com/2ecfdqa.jpg
reetard says:
It works very well. A black and white picture with a colour streak texture and lensflare bubbles works most of the times. Its simple but well done. The Text style and placement suits the graphic. A nice solid black border on the upper and lower side would have made the graphic stand out a bit more. Also the pink stripe of colour beneath Winslet isn't properly placed as you can see a couple of inches space between it and the edge of the picture. I think attention to detail is a must if you are going to have a small graphic. :)

Droolv. says:
This is a great graphic. I love how the maker has taken the risk of doing a black and white graphic but used the colour streaks to enhance their graphic. I like the idea of how the solid vertical bars are both coloured (red) and a shaded (black) with the bubble texture overlapping on the red bar. The placement the text is spot on while the colour (grey) matches the graphic. My only criticism is that itís a small graphic, it would look even better with a larger photo.

Poiree says:
Even though Kate doesn't look like herself there and I was a bit shocked when I saw the graphic at first (mainly because of the thing in her mouth), I am satisfied with the choice of photograph. I have to disagree with Andrew that going for black and white was a risk in this exo since as far as I know all 3 judges like black and white graphics. The text and the lines on which it stands are amazing as well as the lightning effects in that part of the graphic. What I don't like here though is the line that goes over her face, nose in particular and I also notice the quality isn't that good around the eyes and on her neck.Unlike Brad and Andrew I don't mind radial blur at all and actually I don't think it was used to cover bad blending or make it easier. I don't see any blur in the part where the 2 pictures meet. Unfortunately, that is besides the light textures the only thing I like here. I believe the choice of pictures could have been way better, quality wise and also judging the way Halle looks on them. These two pictures do not compliment each other. Also the main pic is too big and because of that the quality is quite bad. The text... well the font itself is not bad, but the brush behind it or whatever it is is horrendous.

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.5

http://i33.tinypic.com/10zsdmp.png
reetard says:
The idea is really god, the photos that are selected are gorgeous, also the colour textures are quite nice. The border looks nice too.

But I have a pet-peeve for radial blur (Thats because I associate it with blending problems, "Hard to blend? Use radial blur!! ") The main picture of Halle does seem a bit blurry. A gorgeous subject like Halle (The most gorgeousliscious of all the tasks for the first round) shouldn't be near radial blur :p

Droolv. says:
The graphic maker has done a fantastic job with choosing photos, as both perfectly reflect Halle Berry. Like the previous graphic, I like the colour streaks through the graphic and the bubble textures; they both have been positioned well. However I donít like how the radial blur has been used as ďa way out of blendingĒ and the brush/font under the font is horrible. Also the main photo is low quality which is a shame. Good effort but Kate Winslet trumps Halle Berry in this one.

Poiree says:

reetard says:
The idea to use a back picture and make it look like a poster is really cool, but the bright vermillion in the background doesnt reall suit the ladies in front of it. Would've been nice if its hue had been tweaked a bit. The ladies are sharp enough and the colouring on them is good, but the cutting skills still need a bit of working. I also am not sure about the cursive font and the serif font together. I do like the text content though.

Droolv. says:
Iím not a fan of this graphic but like the Sarah Jessica Parker graphic, the ideas were there but not the execution. Having a back shot as the centre photo is a good idea but the red glow just looks strange and is poor quality. The girls have been cut out poorly, especially the one on the left, who looks like sheís a mermaid. The texts donít complement each other and donít stand out as theyíre the entire one colour. On a positive note, both cut-outs have been sharpened well.

Poiree says:
The black silhouette is a nice idea and could have looked very good. However, the quality on that part is lost quite a bit. The two pics of Marion in the front are not well extracted and don't go well with the rest of the graphic either. The text in the middle is nice, but I don't like the font in which "Marion Cotillard" is written. I also don't like that three different fonts were used for one graphic. I would never use more than two fonts, especially on a quite small graphic.

AVERAGE SCORE: 3.5

reetard says:
My favourite graphic of the first round (Along with the retro poster). It works really well. Grey+ subtle shades of primary colours looks gorgeous. The pictures are crispy and the colouring is nice. I also like the use of the fonts and their placement.

Still the cut on the smaller picture is a bit dodgy (near her arms). Also I dont like the translucent version of the same photo that is just beneath it.

Droolv. says:
This graphic is my favourite of the round. To start with, both Hilary Swank photos have been extracted perfectly (and are lovely and crisp), making the graphic look very neat. Also the blending is good for when the two photos overlap. I love how the background compliments her dress while the 3 coloured curves lines look stunning with the rest of the graphic. The text looks great, with two different colours and the running writing overlapping over the block writing. The transparent version isnít necessary but doesnít spoil the fantastic graphic.

Poiree says:
One of the best graphics of the round for sure. The only bright light in this group... Looks very nice and neat. The colouring is great, background too. As Brad said there is a few issues with extracting around her hand. The text is done ok, though it is quite ordinary in my opinion. Unlike the other judges I think the graphic needs the transluscent copy of one of the pics. I think it makes the graphic more effective.

AVERAGE SCORE: 7.67

Generally marks out of the top 10 (multiply it by 10 for top 100) represent the following-

0-3 = Below Par

miss_molly: Quite the most surprising graphics of this round. As a new player in GMT, I would place a bet that miss_molly would be a contender next year

http://i34.tinypic.com/27xkklz.jpg

LizeT: I honestly didn't know what LizeT was trying to achieve here, but when the judges said it was 80's, I actually thought it was pretty cool

http://i33.tinypic.com/5mio0i.jpg

Enia: Enia is also another new star we should watch out for. This graphic only proves that his coloring and neatness in her graphics might be one of the best in GMT

http://i33.tinypic.com/2egfok9.png

Yana: Making a 'mini-comeback' is Yana, and this graphic, while a bit risky, is one of the most well done graphics of the round. I like the idea and the blending.

http://i25.tinypic.com/111qs1z.png

kai.: Pretty sad about this graphic. As Droolv. said, this one had a lot of promise with the idea, but the execution wasn't very well done. It's still an improvement on the part of kai. though.

Group Idol:

heart: Interesting choice of photo, and I also liked how the textures and the text blended with the picture.

Stiles: I like the graphic is so 'sophisticated' and complicated. It is a pretty graphic, but I'm sure there is also much to improve on this one.

Michael: Another new graphic maker, Michael. shows us why his graphic making skills are not to be overlooked, with the seamless blending and coloring.

http://i33.tinypic.com/k55yrd.png

Benny.: Unfortunately, Benny. has to go. Again, the idea was very good, but unfortunately, it wasn't well-executed. I'm sure Benny will continue to improve after this stint.

Round 2 Presentation

Theme: European/Asian Food

GROUP IDOL:

reetard
I like that the artist is clear about what the focal point of the graphic is. The main dish does immediately draw your eye, and as a whole the graphic looks compact. Also I think it was a good idea to use bubbles to represent sea food (the idea is good, but the execution could've been better, as the bubbles dont realy look good as they are right now and dont really compliment the whole graphic)

I am not sure about the text style, it looks....erm.. kind of amateurish (gradient overlays, strokes etc. all together). Maybe a nice sleek font with a subtext would've looked nicer.

Droolv.
I love the little details this graphic has. The sugar packet has been extracted well and the little lollies are cute, however I agree with Natasa, why is it in the graphic? The colours used in this graphic are really nice; I love the pale green and brown up against the lighter brown background. I disagree with Brad; I like the green text as it adds to the whole ‘urban’ style of this graphic. The only negative is the roughness of the photo in the frame, but otherwise, this is a great graphic.

Poiree
I wish there was something good I could say about this graphic... It looks like a restaurant ad again, but not a very good one. The text is bad, the font itself is fine, but the gradient colour and the border look like a very cheap solution. As I said earlier, I don't mind radial blur, but it is not very well executed on this graphic. Some parts of the plate are covered with it. On the other hand, I can see the edge of the main picture on the right side... Something positive... well I guess I wouldn't hesitate eating this thing.

AVERAGE SCORE: 4.5

I am a fan of the whole 'urban' style of art. I think the whole graphic looks nice. I like the clever use of the starbucks packet and the toffee brushes. Also the mild colours look nice. The ideas are quite good too.

But, I dont really know about the text. Atleast the name of the dish should be prominent, and not get lost amongst the other text (which is not really readable)
I also think that the graphic lacks something. That X-factor to make the graphic look better and something to bring the whole art together. Maybe even a large photo of the Baklava in the background with lower opacity.

Droolv.

This graphic would make a great wallpaper. For a free graphic, I think there is too much free space on it. Although I must say everything is done well technically (except maybe the picture in the frame which looks a bit roughly added). The textures are nice and I also like the colour scheme. But, what in hell is Starbucks sugar doing there? I find that completely random in this graphic...

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.17

The graphic looks nice. I love the idea of putting that pizza guy in between the alphabets. I also quite like the way the pizza is placed in the graphic. The blue of the text looks really nice with the warm colours of the rest of the graphic

On the other hand, I think it could've don't with a bit larger canvas so the the main text would've had some breathing space. I don't really like the text that is placed around the pizza. If the artist wanted to put something, a nice array of fresh vegetables that went into the pizza would've looked much nicer instead of just their names ;)

Droolv.
I like this graphic. In particular, the way the pizza has been placed on the pizza board is superb. I love the cartoon in the ‘P’, it’s a great little detail that has been added to make the graphic more interesting. The choice of text is good, the blue colour fits the graphic but like Brad said; it looks too squashed and needs more room. I agree with both Brad and Natasa, the text around the pizza isn’t the best idea, and will reflect why this graphic hasn’t gotten a better score.

Poiree
I like this graphic, but I think it is missing the wow factor... It basically looks like an ad for a restaurant, a quite good ad. The main font and the picture are both nicely placed, the waitor picture is an interesting detail too. For some reason I am not too happy ith the background colour. I think it would be better if it was a bit darker and maybe more brown or beige than pink. What bothers me most about this graphic is the text with the ingredients. The "olives" and "mozzarella" are fine, but the text at the very bottom is not needed in my opinion.

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.667

GROUP TALENT:

I have to say, all the graphics in this group are really well-done.

I love the use of just three main colours in this graphic. Shades of Red, black and white look amazing together and make the graphic look really clean and pleasing. I also like the text style and font selection. Overall it looks really compact and nice.

I am not too keep on the flower texture/brushes underneath the plate. I also think that a bit more could've been done with the plate photo that was selected, like making it look like it was on a table with some other stuff (along with some wooden and chinese flower textures)

Droolv.
This is a nice, neat and simple graphic. I agree with both judges, the contrast between the red, black and white is stunning and effective. I love how the main photo has been extracted (very well) and placed onto a matching flower texture, while the thin white and thick black border is a good idea. The text at the bottom is alright, it would have looked better if the text was bigger (therefore the black border would have needed to be thicker).

Poiree
Very nice and neat. I love the contrast between red, white and black in this graphic. The choice of picture is amazing. The background looks quite nice too, but I think it would have been better if there were no grey details on it. The text in the bottom is very cute too.

I really like the vivid colours in the graphic. I think the graphic is well-thought out and the ideas to use the brightly coloured clothing at the bottom is really good. I also like the translucent layer of all the foody stuff that accompanies the curry in the background, it compliments the graphic. Overall, a really well-done graphic.

The only major critique that I have for this graphic is that they could've chosen a better photo of the curry. That one doesnt look very pleasing . Also being the main subject, the photo shouldnt be in the corner of such a big graphic . I know that putting it there makes the whole graphic look better, but atleast it should've been slightly bigger in my opinion. I think a streak of fresh white would've looked really nice somewhere in the graphic (Maybe for the I in India).

Droolv.
Wow, this graphic looks stunning on first impression. The first stands out is the materials down the bottom; it was a great idea to put this in the graphic. Like both judges have previously said, I like most is how the graphic emphasising that the dish is Indian. The textures help to emphasis this idea by all having an ‘Indian-feel’ to them. The text has been done very well but the extracting of the curry is poor with the edges way too soft. Fantastic graphic in which a great deal of thought has gone into it’s creation.

Poiree
Wow, lots of stuff on this one! It is very different to the rest of the graphics in this round... I like the emphasis on the dish being Indian. The background is amazing, the materials, dresses or whatever they are at the bottom look very nice and I think we can get that India feeling on this graphic. The text is done very well too. The only thing I would change is make the "the taste of" a bit smaller. But, there is always a but... The main pic of the dish on the right of the graphic is not extracted that well, some of its edges are too soft. Without that pic the graphic would have been perfect, but it probably wouldn't suit the task then.

AVERAGE SCORE: 8

This is my favourite graphic of the round. The picture selection is amazing, the little dragon texture on the paper looks really good and compliments the over all theme of the graphic. I also like the 2 fonts, and they look nice together with the paper texture. The colours seem really fresh and pleasing.I also like the subtle steamy texture underneath the font, it makes the graphic more inviting.

Droolv.
Oh my god. This graphic is absolutely amazing. To start with, the choice of photo is perfect and the soft, simple colouring used matches it perfectly. I love the Asian texture on the right; it gives the graphic a whole new dimension and compliments the rest of the graphic well. The text is also stunning; in particular I love the font for ‘Dim Sum’ and the colours chosen are good. The soft cloud/steam texture behind the text looks fantastic and gives the finishing touch to a beautiful graphic.

Poiree
Ok, this group is once again a lot stronger than the other one. Another gorgeous graphic. Not overdone, but very nice. The soft colouring is very good, the texture on the right is great too. I also like the fonts that were used here. In some parts the text isn't very visible, but I don't think it ruins the graphic in this case. My only complaint here is that the torn paper effect between the texture and the pic is not sharp enough.

AVERAGE SCORE: 8.33

http://i33.tinypic.com/wjj2wz.jpg

I love the sense of humor in this graphic :worship: The text looks great and goes along very well with the whole 'diary page' look. I also like the wallpaper texture underneath the diary page, as it looks really good when combined with the page. The colours are great (We all know shades of brown compliment shades of blue). I also think it was a very good idea to make the Marion picture black and white. If it was coloured, it would've drawn a lot of focus away from the main subject of the graphic

Talking about the main subject, I dont think that prominent shadow looks good or realisitc on the main photo of the Satays. I slightly smaller shadow would've looked much better. I also think that the arrow would've looked better if it was on the page only and didn't extend onto the wallpaper.

Droolv.
The whole notebook look is always one of my favourites but the background chosen has spoilt this graphic in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, the colours of the background are good but it’s lack of quality is such a shame. The text used on the notebook page is good and this graphic’s listing of the ingredient was much better than the pizza graphic. The Bartoli idea is good; I like the change of colour text, the photo in the circle and the arrow. Like both judges have said, the photo of the dish doesn’t look which is a real shame.

Poiree
I think this is the weakest link in this group... It isn't a bad graphic at all, but there are some things I don't like and some technical issues that could be better. The background pic does not look well, it looks kinda pixelated. I like the paper placed on it as well as the fonts used. The "chicken satay" text gives as that asian effect which makes the graphic more suitable to the task. I don't like that the picture of the dish has a shadow, because it is supposed to be on the paper. Like this it looks like it is on a pile of little papers standing on that paper (if that makes any sense whatsoever). Then there is the Marion detail... some may find it funny, but I unfortunately don't. I find it kinda useless. I mean I am not always against funny graphics, but if you are going for funny, make it actually funny.

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.33

That concludes Round 2. Voting for elimination to come after a few seconds.

 Wow, I really found each graphic in here to be so nice and clean. But thanks to the judges for giving as an honest and great insight for each graphic. I hope the graphic makers see their comments as a way for them to improve on their graphic making skills.

In all fairness, some graphic makers really took advantage of the task that was given to them. Others were not as fortunate, as it was pretty hard to fit in in a particular task, so props off to them also :)

Good round for Enia, as her graphic was the favorite of the judges. I really liked this graphic better, as it's beauty relies on it's simplicity and cleanliness, and was not overdone. Well done!

All graphic makers to be revealed in a while, also Tasks.

In the first round of the finals, there will be a match between the two 'worst' graphics. The winner of that match will proceed to the next round. Round 3 Presentation

Before we start, please welcome Renalicious as our guest judge ;)

http://i37.tinypic.com/2eaq69h.jpg
reetard says:
I like the idea. The blossoms and leaves add a nice Asian touch to the graphic. Also the text is quite well done. As a graphic I absolutely love it (If I dont look at the subject).

But the whole graphic has this Autumn feel and the subject was supposed to be winter sports-related. It isnt exactly sporty either. It looks very japanese, which is great,, but it might as well have been an advert to buy a home in Japan. Even if the artist had used the Olympic logo, I would've have rated it much higher.

Poiree says:
My first reaction was: WOW! I love the whole Japanese feel to it. The house, the little sign next to the text, the flowers... very nice. I am not sure if the radial blur was necessary in some parts of the graphic and I think I would prefer the leaves in the top left corner with a lower opacity, they kinda steal the show this way. I wouls have also lowered the opacity of the texture on the flower on the right. I am a bit surprised that this is the only graphic that didn't focus on Olympics at all.

Renalicious says:
This is done really well. I love the use of flowers and the overall authentic 'feel' of the graphic. I also love the use of the Kanji character to further emphasize this point. The colours are used very nicely and the text works well with the whole graphic. One negative point is that at some areas of the graphic, it gets a little too 'dirty'. For example the top right corner where the flowers are is a little messy, but other than it's a really nice graphic.

SCORE: 7.67

http://i33.tinypic.com/10ooax4.jpg
reetard says:
My favourite graphic of the round. It suits the task perfectly, shows what Vancouver has to offer as well as has a sporty and winter-ish feel to it. All the ice and the sporty figures are a lovely touch, and is indeed very well done. I also like the textures in the background of those buildings. I also like the chubby Vancouver font.

The other sleek font is nice too, but the text seems somewhat incomplete. I also feel that the figures should've been cut in a bit better way.

Poiree says:
It is neat, no major flaws, but for some reason it doesn't do it for me. I like the background pic and the texture. I like the font used for "2010 winter." However, I am confused with the text itself. I would have had either "Vancouver 2010" or "2010 winter Olympics Vancouver." Just "2010 winter Vancouver" sounds reaaally weird. I am not fond of the font for "Vancouver" though it fits the style of the graphic and the thing behind (whatever that is) is done very well. I really like the snowboarder. The hockey player and the skaters are ok, but I would have preferred it without them. I think the figure skaters were not necessary here at all. Basically, for a higher score it would need to lack the skaters (all 4 of them), the hockey player and the text at the top would have to have the word "Olympics" added to it. This way:

Renalicious says:
I love the idea of this graphic and the icy blue colour used as it highlights the winter atmosphere. The colouring is nice and the '2010 Winter' text works well. However, the 'Vancouver' text looks a little dodgy (I don't know if it's the official logo or something, but it just looks sort of out of place.) Also, the cutting on the little figurines could be better executed.

SCORE: 7.17

http://i36.tinypic.com/24o2iir.png
reetard says:
Its plain but it works. I like the font style too as grunge suits the BnW graphic quite well. I also think the pictures are blended quite well and the font colour goes well with the graphic.

But it needs something extra to make it pop-out. It needs maybe a dark contrasting colour somewhere as it seems a bit flat. Even a thick black border would've worked and made it pop-out.

Poiree says:
This is a quite weak graphic. The blending is done well, the idea of the text in the middle is nice. Having said that, I really do not like the font used and I think the graphic needed way more contrast to it. It looks washed out... Also, the text doesn's stand out enough (especially the "winter olympics). It had potential, but wasn't executed well.

Renalicious says:
I like the blending and the choice of pictures and the use of a lighter white as a theme is interesting. But, the orange is a little out of place and just overall, something feels like it's missing. It looks like it's 3/4 of the way to being finished, but it just needs that extra something.

SCORE: 5.5

http://i37.tinypic.com/fctuuh.png
reetard says:
I will start by saying that this graphic has really refreshing colours. Great photo selection The colours in that photo change ever so gradually from Green to blue, its really amazing. I also like the woody texture/building that has been used along with the photo, it looks really nice with the main photo and gives a very Austrian feel to the graphic.

I think the Olympic logo is well-placed but it looks pixelated. Also I think that the subtext should be a bit higher. Over all a well done but simple graphic

Poiree says:
I am pretty sure the maker was going for originality with the roof on the side, but this graphic would be a-m-a-z-i-n-g without that part, or if it was a bit differently done. I don't like that the roof doesn't end where the graphic begins, that it is not simply a triangle, but also has extensions before the pic begins. I love the sharpness of the graphic and the idea of the olympic circles behind the mountain. I am not sure what those words in the background are, but they look nice too. The text is done and placed well too.

Renalicious says:
The ideas are interesting, with the shape of the graphic and the Olympic rings hiding behind the alps. The colouring is nice too. The text is a big let-down, something feels unnatural and contrived. The town looks very idyllic and this does not match the text, which kind of looks technological. Also, something about it just doesn't put the whole graphic 'together', it doesn't really have a focal point that gels things with a purpose.

SCORE: 7.17

http://i36.tinypic.com/1zgas8i.jpg
reetard says:

Its a very sporty graphic, I like it. Also the cool colour scheme looks really nice and kind of represent winter. I normally wouldn't have liked the textures used, but I think they suit this particular graphic and look nice.

Its great that the artist has attempted to show the reflections in water, but it doesnt look right. Here is what i think the mistake is -
If something is emerging or touching the surface of the water, the reflection will look like this -

http://i36.tinypic.com/2vrxz54.png

If something is floating on top of the water (like in this graphic) , the reflection should look something like this -

http://i38.tinypic.com/21or5lv.png

Hope that helps ;) []

Poiree says:
No, no, no ,no! The task was Turin. As I said earlier, I did expect to see cities without any sign of the Olympics, but definitely not Olympics with no sign of the city. The logo is very pixelated, although I do like the idea of it pasted upside down and squashed. The pics are blended fine, the texture in the bottom corners is cute. If I see well the texture on the top is water... not good for winter olympics in my opinion...

Renalicious says:
The colours are put together well, and I like the layers of athletes - some faint, some visible. The texture used is nice but once again the text ruins the graphic - it looks outstretched and awkward and just lowers the quality of the graphic altogether.

SCORE: 4.83

I just wanted to say that I am quite disappointed that most makers included Olympics. The task was the city itslef. I mean when the task was Oscar/Emmy winning actresses, most makers just made the actresses without their awards... So Brad, your complaint about the Nagano graphic is quite out of place in my opinion.

Well, my opinion is a bit different on it :p. For example -

The task for the first round of USO tournament was 'Women who have won US Open before' similar to the Oscar example you have used. Almost all the participants used the trophy pictures (USO First round (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=16426668&postcount=353))
Why? Because the task clearly stated you have to show the past champions. :)

Similarly, in my opinion, when it says Theme: Winter Olympic Cities (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=16559193&postcount=143), I would expect the graphics to be sporty and somewhat olympic-related.. As it is in the theme ;)
If Josh wouldn't have used 'winter olympics in the main theme title but just used it somewhere else to restrict the city-selection for the artists, I would've given the same comments as you.

I assure you all this will be a great final! :yeah:

As the judges grade each graphic, I will explain to you how the finals will work. In the first round, there will still be an elimination. The one with the highest ratings from the judges will move on to the Final Round, while two of those with the lowest scores will go one-on-one with each other, with the winner proceeding to the Final Round.

In the Final Round, the Judges will still grade the second set of graphics from the two finalists, BUT, instead of public voting, the winner will be decided on which GM has garnered the highest ratings from the judges in the whole tournament. That way, we will have a winner who is rightfully deserving, who has not only made an impact on the Finals, but on the tournament as a whole.

reetard says:

I quite like it. The colours are great and the textures are really good. My only complaint is that the figures are not big enough. They should've been mroe prominent and cripier.

The text is quite well done and the gradients are really well used.

Droolv. says:
What can I say? This is a stunning graphic. In particular, the textures used are amazing and the idea of including the logo looks great. The text chosen is fantastic while the blending has been done to perfection. I love how the graphic maker has thought about what colours to use (yellow and purple) to compliment the topic’s team’s colours. I agree with Natasa, shame the Kobe photo has lost quality.

Poiree says:
The standard in this final is really high. I love this graphic. The text, the logo and the little texture on the bottom are amazing. The blending is done well too. There are 2 little things that bug me though. First, the quality is a bit lost on Kobe's face and second, I would prefer if the text "kobe" was erased from his shoulder.

Average Score: 8.417

http://i34.tinypic.com/33njl9d.png
reetard says:
I love the idea/ It looks really great and there aren't really any major faults in it. I lvoe the whole brown-red colour combination in the graphic. Also being a circular graphic, it is more catchy.

I am not sure about the translucent bit extending on to the texture which has the Chicago bulls text. I also quite like the textures used ;)

Droolv. says:
The graphic maker took a risk this graphic (by putting it in a shape of a basketball) but managed to pull it off. The choice of photos are great, in particular the mixture of opaque and solid photos gives the graphic an interesting look. The inclusion on a photo of Chicago city is something that no other graphic did while the logo looks great.

Poiree says:
Very original and nice. I love the idea to make the graphic in the shape of a basketball. I think this was a quite risky thing to do, but turned out well in this case. The colouring is great, too. I also like that some parts are desaturated, so the graphic isn't too colourful and messy. The only thing I mind a bit here is the quality of the Michael Jordan picture on the far right.

Average Score: 8.5

http://i33.tinypic.com/vdpet1.jpg
reetard says:
The colouring is really spot on. The guys looks really nice and crips. I also like the texts used. But I think there is too much of text in it. The textures on to look nice too.

The magic logo seems a bit pixelated and it needs that x-fractor to give it the oomph.

Droolv. says:
This is easily the weakest graphic in the group. Like Natasa said, everything technically was done good; especially the extracting. The blue wispy texture, the background and well-placed logo are also great but the fonts are the reason why this graphic isn’t as good as the others. One font is too thick and the other is too thin, it really unbalances the graphic. Good effort though.

Poiree says:
Technically everything is ok, but I don't like it. The blending is great. The background is done quite well too, but I don't like this too futuristic thing going on in there. I don't like the fonts used. The one used for "09/10" is just not my style and the other one is way too thin and hardly noticable. I am not sure what it needs, but like this it looks incomplete, missing the wow factor...

GMT Factor Finals

Before we leave for Asia (care of reetard ), I just want to thank the participants and the voters for at least taking their time to participate in this exho, no matter how dragging it was :p And of course, to the judges, thanks to the three of you for making this a great exhibition

OK, so we have heart and Yana left as our finalists. Before the tournament, I actually predicted that it would all boil down to the two of them ;) But the other graphic makers did not do a bad job, though. I am pretty surprised at how the other graphic makers fared here.

This the last round, and as announced earlier, the winner will be decided upon the average of the scores of both finalists.

reetard says:
The composition is really good. I like how fresh the picture looks a.k.a the colouring is spot on. The photo selection is great. I also like the fonts that are used.

I still think that it lacks the x-factor, it needs something else to take it to that next level which is needed in the finals ;) Its a bit on the safe-side.

Droolv. says:
I really like the simplicitaty of the graphic. The maker hasn’t tried to cram too much into this graphic, making it neat and compact. First of all the colouring is amazing. The colour of the flowers looks stunning up against the blue sky. The bubbles look good on the graphic, and there is just the right amount of them in the graphic. The word “Spring” in the white box looks fantastic but the in “is here” is a let-down. Good job!

Poiree says:
Not much to say here. Looks nice, slight loss of quality maybe. I like the combination of colours. BUT, way too simple for the final in my opinion!!!

Average Score: 7.17

Again, this graphic is really nice and fresh, it suits the tasks really nicely. I love the text and font arrangement. The pictures are decently arranged, though I dont like how the border on the right is so thick.

PS - I dont get why the artist would use a bikini-clad girl over a hot guy in speedos :p

Droolv. says:
Holy crap! This graphic is absolutely amazing! I love how the maker has user lots of photos (instead of just the one in the previous graphic), to help enhance the topic of summer. The colourings used on each of the photos are all nice and match the overall feel of the graphic. Positioning of photos is good, with 4 equal sized photos in one row then a longer one, then a wider one. It makes the graphic more interesting. The text is a good colour but I don’t really like the font.

Poiree says:
More effort put into this one for sure. The top part looks great (the parrot and fruit especially). The picture of the girl on the beach needs more contrast and the picture with the house and flowers might be slightly too sharp. Still missing the wow factor though...

Average Score: 7.83
