As you can see looking into the e.l., USTA Announced Wild Cards. Now the question is which of them might make some noise at Flushing Meadow, considering that the likes of Boserup, Brodsky and Muhammad aren't doing as well as they could. Probably you all know last year Coco Vandeweghe was the first to win the Open as a wild-card entrant.

No Sachia Vickery anywhere.

Great list, but I'm hoping Bogdan withdraws - she should be focusing on seniors at this point.

Some great unseeded players especially, more than I can remember in recent junior slams;

Zanevska, Linette, Orlik, Zheng, and Curovic have recently had success at $10K level while you also have Top500 players Robson, Bogdan, Diyas, and Hendler. Also very nice to see Ester Goldfeld and Lauren Davis were awarded MD wild cards.

All in all this is shaping up to be a very exciting event.

No Sachia Vickery anywhere.

Yeah, correct. According to that version Sachia is 3 Alternate, but the last USTA announcement (http://www.usta.com/?sc_itemid=%7B0F3FE062-6266-424D-B01B-9B26DBDE5E75%7D) reported her amongst qualifying wild card recipients. That's it.

Looking forward to how Friedsam, Khromacheva, Putintseva, and Saisai Zheng do against the more established juniors.

Also good luck to Ons Jabeur!

An American will probably win though (hopefully not Brengle or Muhammad).

BRENGLE ??? she's 19. Muhammad's strugglin to find a decent form

Well, Friedsam, she improved a lot, a strong serve, curious to see how she copes with the best girls. Regarding Khromacheva, think she's good but not yet ready for the juniors highest level. Putintseva...no words...never seen Zheng

Embree routed a college opponent (Irina Falconi from Georgia Tech) at US Open Women's Qualifying and today faces Shenay Perry for a place in the third round. Keep an eye on Lauren for the Junior Championship! Whereas I'm a bit disappointed by Zarina Diyas, upended by Chang Kai-Chen, suffering second straight loss to the Taiwanese, with no sign of improvement.
Laura Robson took a convincing win over Stephanie Forets, n.128 in the world.

Who's coaching Ulrikke?

It is still a number of people involved, but mainly it is her older brother. Looks to me as she has been inspired by the ITF tour and have changed her game. She played very well last week, so hopefully she can enter this event with some confidence.

She will also start to play 10k now.

After 2 close sets. Laura Robson stops the Hungarian Aniko Kapros at US Open Women's Qualifying, securing a berth into the final round, where she will play Eva Hrdinova for a place in the main draw.
It was the end of the run for Lauren Embree who lost in a thriller to Shenay Perry 7-6 6-7 6-4.

According the poll, 52,2% of the respondents see as favourite to win a player who’s out of top 5 ranked. None bets on Timea Babos. I’ve been expecting a call like that. So, the key question now is, "Which horse will emerge from the bunch?”
Robson?
Embree?
McHale?
Diyas?
Muhammad?
Which one?

Hele.

This is such a wide open event this year. There are seriously about 10 players who could realistically win it! Of course I've got to go with Laura but who knows. She seems to be playing well again after a couple months "slump".

Thor
Aug 28th, 2009, 08:20 PM
I do agree that is looks quite open and that make it more interesting. I do hope (of course) that we will have some "under dogs" cleaning the road, but it all depends on the draw an the first couple of matches...

I do look forward to see how it goes and Laura can go all the way...no doubt about that

All American affair at Manasquan, NJ, Junior International Hard Court Championships (G2).
Ester Goldfeld and Grace Min won their respective SF matches to set up an all-american final. An amazing Goldfeld - who had outplayed Khromacheva in the Quarters - beat Monica Turewicz 2 and 2. Then Grace Min battled past Robin Anderson of Matawan, NJ, 6-3 4-6 6-3. As far as I know Ester and Grace never played each other.

Michael Pemulis
Aug 29th, 2009, 02:36 PM
Who said Khromacheva is a player to watch for the Championship? There is no doubt that Irina is talented but I think she's not ready to play at her top level yet.

Michael Pemulis
Aug 30th, 2009, 09:40 AM
Although Laura scored more points then her opponent (136 pts vs 129 pts), she lost a heartbreaking match to Eva Hrdinova in the the final round of Qualifying. Probably she was nervous, coz could have played way better: Laura was up 4-0 and 30-love up on the Hrdinova serve in the third set, to lose the next five games! The Briton broke again to lead 6-5, but made 3 d.f. when she served for the match. She saved 2 match points in the tie-break before Hrdinova hit a forehand winner to take it 7-4. So her attempt to become the youngest player ever to qualify for the US Open ended in a bitter way.

Herratic serve might have been a key factor, with 5 aces and 22 d.f. When she was up in the third, kept muttering about being unable to breathe. Tears flowed afterwards.

Anyway she got 8,000 bucks and 50 Wta points for making it to this round. Not bad at all :-)

Michael Pemulis
Sep 2nd, 2009, 01:35 PM
Christina McHale routed Polona Hercog to get her first win at a Grand Slam. That's a great accomplishment, but let's see that win in the true light: Polona is in a downfall (5 losses in a row) and played really horrible.

Wanna quote iPatty's post, who I guess watched tha match:

"Christina!

Big moment in her career, the first Slam win. Nice to see her using her wild card to great effect. Polona was really horrible the entire match though, some of those forehand misses late in the second set were hilarious. It's sad that someone with such a beautiful, varied game doesn't trust herself on any surface other than clay. She has to work on improving her game on other surfaces or she will turn into another Cornet".

Do u know, guyz, who's coachin' Chistina at the moment?

Michael Pemulis

On the other hand, Kiki Mladenovic didn't play that good yesterday. Dubois cruised past the French Sensation 0 and 4. Kiki was up 4-1 with 2 breaks in the 2nd but choked and ended up losing it.

I'm slightly surprised to see Vickery lose after beating Bogdan last week.
I really wanted Victoria to win. I don't know why, I just like her!
Good effort from Brooke as the only 1996 player in the draw she really made it close.

I'm also kind of disappointed by Sachia. Pekhova is playing like a crap, so Risa Ozaki is too good for her at the moment. Guess Stoica is gonna make it to the main draw and really deserve it. Victoria Duval fought hard ma sadly lost as I thought. Papamichail vs Omae will be a close matchup, which I consider the match of the day. Courtney D. and Noel S. are the only Americans survived!

Sloane WILL play the Jr. US Open.

Someone I know, who is close to Sloane, says that she will try to fly down for the funeral during the Jr Open and then fly back to NY. She is doing okay from what the source says. The source talked to her mother and said the same thing.
