Ok so one again this year I'm here as a journalist for www.stephaniedubois.net (http://www.stephaniedubois.net). I arrived last night in Toronto and have been walking around with my notepad and photocamera all day taking pictures of pretty much anyone.

I'll try to update this thread a few times a day with notes, comments and maybe picture if I have time.

If you have any requests, please do so and I'll do my best :)

Weather here is exceptionnal, but also quite hot. 30 celsius in the shade, and not one single cloud is seen in the sky. Should get even hotter this afternoon, and should last all week.

-Nice job by Marino to make things close. Barrois has a nice serve, great slice, but really wasn't playing great tennis. Rebecca fought well in the second, served really well and played a great game at 6-5 to break. Third set was close, but experience prevailed I guess. Rebecca had 3 bps in the last game to make it 5-5 but sadly couldn't convert.

- Michelle started her match really well, up 2-0, then Kveta just managed to find the court with her shots and just totally destroyed every single serve of Michelle. And I mean destroy as in return winners. Michelle didn't play bad, she just needs to work on that serve. Grunting was quite accessible today for those who wonder ;)

- Vinci went down a break in the second but her variety and power was just too much for Vosko. Nothing exciting there.

- Saw the start of Groenefeld-Baltacha. Baltacha was just bashing the ball and Groenefeld impressed me by varying well and waiting for the right ball to just whack the backhands. Thought it would be easy, but now I just see Bally is up 5-2 in the third. I guess she started to stop missing and everything is falling in.

- Hradecka has a weird game, big first serve, second is quite slow and attackable. Sometimes uses two hands on forehand, sometimes she stays with 1 hand. Fought quite well to finish up the set in the first, while Kutuzova just looked annoyed, pissed and sad all around. I'm glad Hradecka pulled through in the tiebreak.

I'm soon leaving for another run around the courts, want to see Rybarikova-Granville, Coin-Zec Peskiric and the end of Vogele-Wickmayer (if Vogele can win the second it would help me ;) ).

- It's so nice to see Granville back on a court :D She is hitting pretty well, missing some balls she didn't used to miss but the shots are still there. I had never seen Magda play, I knew it was a different type of player but I was a bit disappointed. Her shots seem effective, but her technique has numerous flaws and her attitude wasn't stellar so far. This match could be a long battle.

- Julie Coin is playing amazing attacking tennis. Hitting big serves, big groundies and looking to go up to the net as much as possible. Impressive stuff. Masa just is running around trying to do her best, but she is clearly not matching to Julie's level right now. Watch out for Julie in this tourney if she plays like that.

I'm about to go check out our canadians who seem to be doing pretty well. Heidi is surprising me with her lead over Pavlyuchenkova, and Marie-Eve against Mirza seems to be exciting with the Indian crowd and canadian fans.

Some big names already here: Maria, Ana, Sveta, Mauresmo, Azarenka have all been seen on practice courts already today.

Others include: Schiavone, Vesnina, Benesova, Schnyder, Fichman, Dubois, Tetreault, Cibulkova, Suarez-Navaro (in a see-through sports bra...yes, proof is coming ;) ), Cornet (loud cheering for Julie), Rezai, Razzano, Chakvetadze, etc.

Michelle's serve  :help:. At least she didn't hit a ton of DFs this time. Seriously, if she ever wants to make a big impact the serve has to improve so much. She needs to change the technique, not just practice the same one.

Thank you for the reports CharlDa. Pics of Yaroslava, Camille, or Anna Chak would be my choice if possible.

Thanks CD! Please give us some info about the Heidi match when you can. What a victory for her! :D

- Great win for Heidi. Ok Pavlyuchenkova actually couldn't put more than 2 shots in, but Heidi was solid and served well. She was looking great, I knew she lost weight but not that much, around 20 if not 30. Great outfit and her fitness level definitely is helping her results cause she always had the talent.

- Marie-Eve played a good match against Mirza. The crowd was going crazy, Indians were so loud, canadians got in, the umpiring and line calling was horrible. Both have a clear weakness: Marie-Eve's forehand is the reason for her downfall, her extreme western grip led to ulgy mistakes and constant moonballs. Mirza's serve is quite week too, no use of the legs at all, she just stands there and hit. Mirza from the ground was much stronger, especially the forehand of course. Nice rallies and it was a fun match to watch.

- Radwanska ended up winning the match after having like 6 match points in the 5-3 game. Parra was just hitting aces and winners every time. Parra is quite an unexpected player, can hit winners from weird positions, but Radwanska was more solid all around.

- Sharon is in a fight with Morita right now. Morita is hitting flat and deep but not as hard as I thought. Sharon doesn't push as much as she used to, but on important point she does tend to slice and moonball, which Morita seems to like. Morita looks physically drained right now and it might be a factor in the third set. Mentally Sharon was all over the place, yelling, complaining about calls that were clearly right, and just constantly looking at her coach, old Dani style.

- I was right with Sharon. Morita retiring in the third.

- Garbin-Pin looked like a great battle, wish I could have been there. Poor Camille, I was for her.

- Kateryna Bondarenko's dog is adorable. She isn't making any friends here though so far, but he is.

- Cute moment: Azarenka getting off the court in a cart, kids running after her wishing her good luck, her waving and laughing, the Agi Radwanska coming out of nowhere, jumps in the cart and they just start chatting and get away.

- Dumbkiri: I didn't see Maria play, but I have pictures of her practicing.

- Todd: I think Heidi has a shot. Mirza isn't playing well, lost to Steph, did three sets against Sharon and Marino. Sharon is gonna struggle against Wickmayer I think. The tennis and attitude she had today won't last long against Yanina who was the one that impressed me the most today. She is just gonna whack those slower balls.

- LegionArgentina: Sadly I didn't see Gisela, which lasted like so fast. I'll probably see her tomorrow :)

- Daszmarrelli: Saw her around the grounds and finishing practice, but didn't get pictures. I'll try tomorrow, she is on my list.

- hugo2004: Pictures of Michelle are coming tomorrow morning :).

Ok so I just got here, got news that Venus and Serena were practicing, which was true. I get there, all excited, with my great camera, Venus is on the first court like 3 meters away from me, I'm almost crying, I take a pic of her, and then that big man comes to me and said: Richard Williams requested no pictures. So all I have is one picture of Venus, and I'm a bit disappointed. I'll have more chances though.

Serena was working hard on coming to the net and volleying a lot. Venus was hitting serves on some targets. Both looked in shape, were having fun with the dog, laughed with Rennae Stubbs and Mattek Sands who were playing right after.

- Laura seemed to be stuggling with her right shoulder it seemed. Not sure if it's the official reason for her retirement, but that's what people were saying. At least it's not the wrist again.

¤CharlDa¤
Aug 16th, 2009, 02:18 PM
Todd: No idea for WCs yet, I think Fichman-Pelletier might be trying to get in by themselves which is possible. That could leave like Steph-Val-Aleks or sthing like that for a WC.

Steven: It was clearly not full yesterday. Center Court was close to empty, though the grounds were more crowded. Marie-Eve vs Sania was pretty much packed.

- iSzavay: Agi was practicing on a far court just seconds ago, and she was hitting with Radwanska yesterday and I have good pics of that.

Oups it is, sorry about that. I'll change it right now.

Sadly I don't have pics of Heidi as she is always playing on center court which is tough to access with pictures.

Just back from the practice courts, where Steph was hitting with Wozniacki. Nice friendly atmosphere, Caro is a nice girl.

I'm quite surprised at the atmosphere so far this year. I remember in the past years the friendliness between the players wasn't that great. Now you see players just chatting, smiling and waving at each other. Just like Petrova who just drove by Steph in her cart and waved and smiled at her.

Steph is hitting incredibly well this week. Attacking well, hitting hard solid balls. Hopefully she can relate that to matches where she is a touch too defensive.

What I know about doubles WCs:

Sharon and Aleks are getting one together. Marie-Eve is trying to find a partner to get in, and if she does, then Steph and either Heidi or Rebecca will be in main draw. Last news I had, Steph and Rebecca were in but nothing confirmed.

I saw Amelie earlier today, but missed her practice by a few minutes. Aravane was practicing in the further courts and I just passed by her, she was giving an interview.

Alizé was hitting with Medina Garrigues, she has been her sweet self all week, walking around the grounds and taking pictures and smiling. She was quite intense in her practice indeed, but I couldn't really tell the level of her game from this.

I forgot to say I saw Ana practicing yesterday. I remember how she used to be oozing joy, innocence and all. Yesterday she looked tired, unhappy, her toss was all over the place and didn't have the same energy she used to have

Quite a big crowd for the 4 practice courts, and with good reason: quite the popular stars were on at the same time.

First court: Kim vs Daniela, playing a practice set. Great rallies, Kim really can still play. Daniela seemed to be doing well too.

Second court: Medina vs Ivanovic. Ana missing a lot, but still making Medina run around.

Third court: Kuzzie vs Azarenka. Very intense, grunting, yelling, racket breaking, etc. Nice rallies though.

Fourth court: The canadians: Steph, Val and Marino.

The worst match I've seen Steph play since I've known her. She never got in it, the crowd was boring, she seemed nervous to start and just kept on looking for solutions. Nothing was working. A match to forget for sure.

Oh well, it happens. She needs to be able to win even though she doesn't have 15000 people behind her.

Just back from Heidi vs Stosur. Sam is bipolar, obviously. Sucks until 5-6, set points Heidi, the big serving, aces, winners, and Heidi doublefaulted the last two points of the tiebreak. Then she wins easily until 3-0, has points for 5-1 and now starts sucking again. And it seems it keeps on happening still, as she just missed a match point. Heidi is playing solid, hitting hard and deep but Sam when on is just too strong.

The only good thing about Steph's match finishing fast is that I managed to get the end of Cornet-Rezai which was quite entertaining. Long rallies, Rezai hitting hard balls from everywhere, Cornet running around and finishing points with great gets. Wish there would have been a third.

Val vs Szavay was a good match. Val had her chances but just couldn't break, even though she had many chances to break (around 10 I think).

Szavay hits sooooooo deep, that was the key. All her shots were less than a foot from the baseline and she varied from higher balls on the forehand to really hard backhands. Val played quite well too, saved many match points with gutsy winners, but just couldn't get the break she needed.

I was expecting Steph and Marino to get killed to Kirilenko-Vesnina, but it ended up being a great match. Steph and Rebecca fought so well in the second to rally back from 5-3 and then 1-4 in the tiebreak, but a few key mistakes in the supertiebreak cost them the match.

Rebecca's serve is amazing, but she doesn't have the best hands. The mix with Steph who is quite athletic was nice, just trouble finishing some volleys and smashes for both of them. Vesnina really wasn't great today.

What a great tennis day today. With Steph and Venus out, now all I have to do is enjoy the good tennis. I don't know what to choose today though.

Radwanska vs Szavay for a set, the Rezai-Safina. For the second matches, the five ones at the same time could be interesting: Sharapova-Bammer, Sugiyama-Dementieva, Zheng-Wozniacki, Razzano-Pennetta and Kleybanova-Cibulkova. I don't know what I'll do really.
Then Clijsters-Azarenka and Jankovic-Schnyder. God, so much good tennis!

I'm more for Caro but I'll see that match for sure ;)

Just back from the first set of Szavay-Radwanska. Agnes is playing well one point out of two, Radwanska is just solidly hitting deep and not painting the lines uselessly.

Aravane-Safina, here I come!

¤CharlDa¤
Aug 19th, 2009, 06:32 PM
And here we go again: Upset!

Caro was up 5-2, 5-4 40-15, lost 9 games in a row to go down 0-4, won 3 in a row including two breaks, then had a chance for 4-5, but Zheng pulls off the win.

Caro hits harder that what I thought, but she was missing a lot today, Zheng was taking the ball so early and so flat, both were moving incredibly well on court, but Zheng with more of an edge in attacking. Nice match though.
