So OK, Cincy sucked:ras:
Time to leave it behind and look forward to Canada:)

To be honest, at this moment I expect absolutely nothing from Ana:o
Her match against Czink must have been god-awful to watch! I feel sorry for everyone who had to witness this train-wreck...

Still, deep down under all this double faults, ugly ball tosses, unforced errors and insecurities, is still a champion. It may be sleeping - or more precisely in a coma like state - but it could awake any moment:bounce: Right?

Maybe Toronto will bring out the best in her:) Maybe we will see glimpses of "Vintage Ana", the one that deserved her ranking and even made it to No.1 in the world.
It's been a while since we've seen her, but you never no...
Maybe she'll surprise all of us and will come out guns blazing, shoes queaking, AJDE!ing and fistpump-turnaround-knee-kicking:inlove:

As always I hope for the best, but I'm definitely prepared for the worst:D

Not that it matters at all... but the draw for the Rogers Cup will be done tomorrow and we will be able to follow it live:

Official Draw to Kick-Off Rogers Cup at CN Tower

For tennis fans, there is nothing better than exciting match-ups between rival players. Serena and Venus Williams provide drama in every head-to-head match, while Serena and Dinara Safina have traded verbal barbs, each trying to prove they are the world’s No. 1 player.

It is match-ups like these that will attract fans to the 2009 Rogers Cup, where they will see an incredible player field begin action on August 15. With the entire Top 25 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour coming to Toronto, the possibilities for intense, hard-fought matches are almost endless.

Before the fun begins on the court though, opponents must be decided, and the anticipation will finally end at the Official Draw taking place August 14 at Horizons Restaurant at the top of the CN Tower. In a change from previous years, the Official Draw will be an exclusive, invite-only affair with media and VIP ticket holders and sponsors as the only people in attendance. The event will feature Russian star Maria Sharapova, Rogers Cup tournament director Karl Hale, and will run from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Fans can get a sneak peek into the high-class proceedings via live Web cast on the Rogers Cup Web site (www.rogerscup.com), beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Shortly after the Web cast begins, Tournament Referee Tony Cho will begin the draw, putting an end to the suspense over possible match-ups. Within minutes, the opening round will be determined, while fans can look ahead to potential meetings between their favourite players.

Fans in Toronto can expect to see electrifying competition between fantastic, evenly-matched players. By tuning into the Official Draw, locals can get the early scoop on these match-ups, as the excitement grows for the start of the 2009 Rogers Cup.

I could settle for Monday night.. But I guess they will give that slot to either Sharapova or Clijsters.

I think Ana will still play on center court in her first match, so they would broadcast her match. I can only hope she has already forgot about that stupid service motion.

Guys on Ana's website crack me up:

Ana would play either Estonia's Kaia Kanepi or another qualifier in the second round, with eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki a potential opponent in round three.

Second seed Serena Williams is Ana's most likely opponent in the quarter-finals, while No.4 Elena Dementieva or No.6 Svetlana Kuznetsova could await in the last four. What's the point of guessing who's going to be her QF opponent, let alone SF... when she's proly gonna lose in 1r to qualifier. Yet again. :tape:

Official-Sony Ericsson WTA Tour UPDATE - Toronto Fans! On Monday at Noon, head to Yonge/Dundas streets for a special Sony Ericsson event with Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki (Safina will still be in Cincinnati to play in the final) reenacting of the Agassi/Sampras Nike ad of 1995!

So.. The Ana-Safina match up is so doomed it can't happen even in WTA promotional act. Ana and Safina have been draw to meet each other in so many tournaments since the RG final last year, and Ana has lost 1 or 2 matches early every single time.

From the tournament forum:

I forgot to say I saw Ana practicing yesterday. I remember how she used to be oozing joy, innocence and all. Yesterday she looked tired, unhappy, her toss was all over the place and didn't have the same energy she used to have

That's just so said.. Ana has lost her spark, her happiness on court. It's really hard to play well if you are not enjoying it.. and one of Ana's main qualities was her love for the game.

She was probably frustrated with herself or with a bad practice session, but still.. :sobbing:

One thing I can't understand though.. she seemed okay at Wimbledon. She gets a month off, which should give her some more energy.. and comes back this sad? What's going on?

This is the confusing part. I actually thought things were looking up at Wimbledon. I was optimistic for the start of the hardcourt season.

Yes.. I don't understand it either.. but the little I've seen from her in the hard court season (apart from the bad results), she has looked really down to me. I wrote this in the forum, after seeing her interview with Fox Sports in LA, even before the tournament. Like some sadness was oozing from her.. I've never felt Ana like this before.. it's so weird.

I still have some hope she gets a serious recognized coach for the off season. Not a new Kardon please...

Was Chandler Bing a recognised coach before he started working with Safina?Or this gigolo-looking coach of Azarenka?Somehow i don't think being an experienced coach is such a big deal.A thirsty rookie could do the work as well.Anyway i also don't understand what was so wrong with Kardon. There wasn't any improvement for sure but she didn't regress wither. And askin Ana to come to the net more often makes more sense than the Adidas wiseguys idea of changing her whole service motion

I can`t believe they don`t understand how important part of her game is her serve. The more they mess with her serve the harder will be to fix it :banghead:

shouldnt be too long. Vinci, ElTabakh, and Wickmayer have their opponents. Safarova beat Urszula. Dulko lost to Niculescu. Shvedova beat Bychkova. I think its gonna be one of these opponents for Ana

Kardon with his "The ball toss will work itself out", "all she needs to do is rush the net" would not help Ana either. And it didn't work as a coach-player relationship, as she was fast enough to let him go.

But I agree with you that a thirsty rookie could be good as well. Ana just need to find her fit, someone who can motivate her and make her a better player.

I also agree that what she has now isn't doing it.. I believe the adidas programme has great coaches, but Ana and her game are in such a state that she needs full time atention.

While Daniela and Kim were practicing in the nearby court, Ana and Anabel was practicing in the second court. Ana looked much more tan in person and did not seem like she wanted to be there. At least Ana is being able to tough out wins..

I was able to see the last game. Her serve is definitely different.. not as effective and not as hard. But more controlled somehow.. The motion is not as fluid as before, with the shorter swing, but she must have worked on it, since it doesn't look all that bad. She gets a lot more control on the ball toss though.. the toss looked really good.

Sure... it must have been bad at points.. she did get 7 DFs after all. Still a big number.

Did you see it Jonny?

The last game was error after error from Rybarikova. Ana had one very very very nice aggressive BH slice though, which she used to win the first point. Then they say Ana doesn't have variety.. tell me who besides her and Amelie can use the BH slice as a weapon?

I hope Ana gets her service motion back one day though.. it was so beautiful.. really smooth. Can't figure out why the change.. the problem was always the toss, not the motion. This new one is a bit awkward, and doesn't seem to do any damage.

Come quotes:

"I felt my movement, my shots, everything was working well, but I was trying to play a little too safe, I think," said Ivanovic, who will meet Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the second round. "She's a good player, and she was playing really aggressive and dominant.

"So then I tried to change a little bit and be more . . . patient, but still aggressive, and hit the way I was practising. And it worked really well."

She needs to be dominant and aggressive.. playing safe doesn't really work for Ana.

"As soon as I stepped on the court I felt quite good," said Ana. "I felt my movement, my shots, everything was working well, but I was trying to play a little too safely, I think. She's a good player, and she was playing really aggressive and dominantly.

"So then I tried to change things a little bit and be more more patient, but still aggressive and hit the way I was practicing. And it worked really well. I'm really, really happy. In the second and third set I really played well...like myself."

Some more:

She needed a pep talk from coach Scott Byrnes after the first set.

“I told him I feel really good, I’m just not making (shots) or winning games,” Ivanovic said. “ He told me I’m being too passive, to commit to my shots a little more.”

She has been experimenting with a shorter swing and other changes to her game she termed “a work in progress”.

http://www.torontosun.com/sports/2009/08/18/10502126.html

Pep talk from Sven, not Scott.. but well.. why all the changes in such an already confusing moment? Also.. don't be passive Ana. Be patient, but not passive.

Ivanovic, now ranked 11th, survived a scare earlier in the day .

The 11th-seeded Serb expected to cruise past her unseeded opponent. But after playing a conservative first set, she had to rally from behind to defeat Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

"I was trying to play a little too safe, I think," said Ivanovic, who won this event in 2006. "I thought things were going to come easier, because I can just make my shots. But it wasn't, because I was too defensive."

After having her serve broken twice in the first set, Ivanovic requested a coach's timeout. The advice he gave was simple: Start going for winners.

"He said exactly that," Ivanovic said, "that I'm too passive and have to be aggressive and commit to my shots a little more. And that's what I did. So it worked out good."

Why does she keep this "I expect things to come easier" thing? It's so stupid.. don't expect anything, fight for it. Hopefully she can start the next match commited to her shots, going for it.. not defensive and passive.

A video clip of one point doesnt erase my memory from last Wednesday..or reports out of Toronto all week of eyewitnesses to Ana's practices, that say her balltoss is all over the place. One thing seems for sure, that shes going to stick with it and keep working at it.
Btw, who posted that clip, is there more video from the match?

I just read it too.. I could see it was slower... but ugh.. 140 used to be Ana's average second serve. It's really weak for a first serve.. really weak. If she plays a good player she is going to get killed. I will not even mention the 120.. :help::tape: That was how Wozniacki was serving with an injured back at RG! :tape:

I think this "change the service motion" thing is another decision we can add to the "List of bad decisions made by Ana's team, volume 2008-2009".

I know they are looking for a solution.. something to get her serve together. But I can't see how serving puff balls is a good idea.. :o The problem was never the motion, it was always the ball toss. And if she is going to have an average first serve of 140 kmh and still only 60% and around 7 DFs, then it's a huge regression, even if we compare to her serving this year. If she is going to go for this wearker serve, she needs to get into Azarenka mode and serve at 90%. At Wimbledon and RG this year, Ana was serving average first serves of 160 kmh, and usually at the 180s kmh. That's a huge difference to now.. :help::tape:

Thanks to illusyve at GM
Arrived at the stadium 3-1 first set with Ana serving. Her toss is always off to the left, and the speed on the serve is pretty average (140-150km/h first serve, 120-ish km/h second serve), which is no longer considered her weapon. Magda was serving at 170-180km/h and with decent placement in the first set, so Ana's looked sad in comparison

After being broken in the second, I thought Ana would suffer another embarrassing first round exit, but she picked up her level and found her range on the forehand and began to hit winners. At one point, her shot was called out and she challenged and mouthed "please please" while waiting, which I thought was cute, and it was indeed in. She won two lucky netcords in the match (seems like her specialty), but it was pretty much cruising for her after regardless of a minor hiccup in the third.

Good comeback

I really wonder if there is a reason they are doing this... like maybe to straighten the ball toss before returning to the old service motion... Ana`s herself said it was a work in progress and her serve in RG and Wimbledon was better than this... fact is that serve let her down against Azarenka and Venus, so maybe they are trying to find something more reliable... I`m pretty sure she looks sad because she doesn`t like the new serve either...
