La Loma Sports Centre” and “Lomas Racquet club” today set the stage for the 32 teams that began playing in the first day of the group stages. The 'round robin' play will last for two more days before the qualifiers progress to play in the knockout stages for the rest of the week. A gloomy morning gave way to a sunny afternoon and evening, the intense blue sky decorated with a just few white clouds.

One of the ties of the day was played between top seeds Russia, by Roland Garros finalist Daria Gavrilova, and unseeded Croatia, who had world No.7 Ajla Tomljanovic spearheading their attack. Russia took the lead in the tie when Ksenia Kirillova overcame Dora Vajdic 62 62. Then Zagreb-based Tomljanovic demonstrated her superiority over Gavrilova throughout the whole match, winning it in straight sets, 63 63 to level the tie. On an outdoor hard surface, not the clay favoured by the Croatian, the players clung to the baseline and played long, hard-hitting rallies, in which the Russian seemed more comfortable. However, Gavrilova did not get the most out of her usually strong right hand and committed a series of unforced errors that sapped her confidence. A few risky approaches to the net by the Tomljanovic paid off and some impressive first serves, including a scattering of aces, ensured the Croatian's side of the scoreboard increased at the greater rate.

Shortly afterwards, in the doubles match, the Russian girls clinched the victory in a very equal performance by both teams, coming through 76(6) 64. “We could have won doubles. It was a very tight match. We will be ready for tomorrow”, said Australian Open doubles champion Tomljanovic, who was disappointed about today’s result but will certainly fight for victory again tomorrow.

The happiness in the Russian camp was visible. Gavrilova admitted “I didn’t play well in the singles match. They had some set points…to this point we didn’t play well but then after we just grown up and started playing well”. With high spirits, the Russian team felt confident about winning the Final after their first day performance.

Russia meets Germany in the Final

Japan's girls could not celebrate today, after been defeated easily by an assured Russian team that was determined to come out on top. Ksenia Kirilova scored a 62 76(6) win against Risa Ozaki, and Daria Gavrilova repeated the achievement, beating Akiko Omae 64 64.

Kirilova admitted “It was hard because I’m tired. I tried to focus on every single game”.

German Stephanie Wagner beat the Slovak Vivien Juhaszova 63 64 in the opening rubber of their semifinal. In the second singles Annika Beck, ran into trouble against Slovak Republic’s No.1, Jana Cepelova, who won 75 36 62.

The doubles was a very long, agonising match, that ended up with German celebrations, as they came through 60 67(3) 62. Although Germany won the first set with little drama, in the second the Slovaks recomposed themselves and forced a tiebreak with some truly impressive forehands from Chantal Skamlova and Vivien Juhaszova.

The Slovak squad support to each other throughout. When they are not on the court they cheer for their team from the stands.

Anna-Lena Friedsam was happy after defeating the Slovaks, saying “the match was great. Stephanie played wonderful. We played fast”.

Tomorrow they take on Russia: “I will rest in the hotel with the other girls" said Friedsam. "We will have a good breakfast in the morning and I hope we play very well”.

Wagner had a stunning performance today and commented “I won my singles and the doubles. I’m happy, I cannot believe it!”. Kindly signing balls and posing with a good number of fans, she highlighted the warmth of the local audience. “They are sitting down around the court and tell us Come on!! It was very nice”.

Russian girls’ glorious moment

The Russian team is the champion of the Junior Fed Cup Final 2009. Russian Ksenia Kirilova took over two hours to defeat to beat Germany's Stephanie Wagner, 63 46 86.

If we could compare what took place on Court 7 with a play in the theatre, this would have been the performance of a contemporary tragedy. If the introductory set had a Russian signature, in the second the Teutonic staged a come back and won all the crucial points. The tension grew throughout the third set. Both players showed signs of nervousness. The quality of the first serve was unpredictable and often weak. Wagner needed treatment on a painful left thigh, and she faced a clear disadvantage. Most of the match was played from the baseline, the players trying to out hit their opponent with big forehands and multiple service breaks. The final points rested less on who had a better strategy and more on who made more errors. From the stands, the local audience cheered for both girls, encouraging them to stay calm.

In the second, definitive match, Russia’s No.1 Daria Gavrilova beat German No.2 Annika Beck 61 63. Captain and players posed in front of the cameras with their National flag. “We’re so happy. We won, it’s unbelievable. We will celebrate it in Moscow!”

The teams decided not to play the doubles and the Russians started celebrating.

Third and fourth positions

Czech Republic defeated France in Junior Davis Cup the third place playoff, while Slovak Republic beat Japan to finish third in the Junior Fed Cup.

Right after the Australia vs Great Britain doubles match, the presentation ceremony took place. Members of the Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup Committee gave the prizes to the champions. There was also a special recognition for the winners of the ITF's Team ID prize, which is awarded to the best presented teams throughout the week.
