Shahar Peer of Israel upset defending champion Alize Cornet of France in straight sets in the second round of the $220,000 Budapest GDF Suez Grand Prix in Budapest on Wednesday.
Peer jumped ahead 5-1 in the first set before losing her serve, but did not allow Cornet much of a comeback and quickly closed out the set 6-2. The second set was even more lopsided and ended 6-0.
"I played very well, I did what I had to do," Peer said. "I managed to hold on to my tactics to play aggressively and control the game."
In Friday's quarterfinal, Peer will face sixth-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine who defeated Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Lost heart there to continue posting? Not the greatest of debuts for live scoring in the Shahar forum... ;)
Why the title? Attempt at reverse jinxing?

Does anyone know her schedule till the US Open?

Report By Lunaris:
Schiavone vs. Peer
Until 1-5 in 1st set Peer played an excellent match, returns and groundstrokes were very deep, her forehand looked to be at 2007 level, maybe even better (it was flattened out and she was attacking and hitting winners). Schiavone didn't stand any chance. Peer's level dropped then but still was ok. 10th game was decisive, Schiavone hit two doubles to offer Peer a chance to make it on deuce. Many deuces followed, but in the end Peer missed a bh return when Schiavone had an advantage. 5-5 and Peer called her coach but despite that couldn't make it to tie-break.
In 2nd set Peer's game dropped even more, back was the moonball forehand, serve didn't help her at all, she tried some bh slice approaches but those were regularly too short and became an easy prey for Fran, she just passed and passed and passed.

Shame for Peer, because she looked really good in first 6 games, and shame for the crowd because it lost one of the best players in the tournament. Unfortunate draw having Schiavone and Peer against each other in 1st round.

 Sounds just like against Bondarenko. I'm still waiting for her to play like that constantly, and not just once in a while..
Good luck Shahar in the next turnys!

im so crushed for Shahar but i still like Franny.

I don't know whats up with Shahar.
She races out to a lead then chokes miserably. :tape:
I hope she will have a great US Open series.
she needs to start winning matches again before the USO.

Shahar will play Austria next week. Again a small turny on clay.
Then she moves to hard court and play 3 turnys before the U.S Open, so lots of chances to win matches :D

Shahar got a great break in the draws taking the spot of the number 2 seed. First match is against a WC ranked about 400 in the world.

shahar up 6-4, 5-2 and shes been playing okay from what i've seen. i think she's struggling too much though against a girl who just isnt that good yet. she's been hitting some great shots and im loving the power but on the ones shes been missing, they've been horrible misses on easy shots thats shes just thought shes won. example: 6-4, 3-2 15-15, she was dominating the rally had a very short ball that was a high one and she just had to hit it anywhere in the court as her opponent was off, and she lazily hits a overhead and misses by like 4 inches. :tape:

i came in on the second set and i saw hot and cold. she'd be on first gear, then shift, first gear, then shift, first gear, then shift. she hit a couple really horrible misses when she was trying to go for her shots but really she should've just kept the ball in play and let this girl hit the errors cause she could not stay in a rally if her life depended on it.

 It seems like after the Martinez and co. pushing era now its just the opposite.. over agressive era :p
I'll take the latter any time over the former..
Shahar will find the balance eventually if she won't lose her confidence and keep playing agressive.

Yep, and on top of that the other seed of her quarter, CSN, surprisingly lost her 1st round match, so everything short than a SF would be an underachievement.

I thought the same thing about getting to the SF, but at this point I just want to take it one step at a time.
It was nice to see her win. I was hoping for at least a QF in Prague, but what can you do?

I hope everyone is doing well. I'd love to come back and visit again. When I was a pilot in the US Navy I came often and I have been several times since I got out. I use to eat at a wonderful Chinese restaurant in Haifa, (I did a thread a few years ago on this place) but can't remember the name. Oh well... to all in IS. I envy you, what a wonderful county. (BTW does any one know what Anna Smash... is up to?)

when shes confident in herself, everyone will notice. she can just smack that ball around no problem and just hit winners like its nothing. but i havent seen her play like that in a long time, we've seen glimpses of it when she's held 5-1 leads but then her brain went to hawaii and left her on court alone :o

hopefully she can make a deep run here. she just needs to keep her fighting spirit up and she can challenge anybody in the draw. she just needs to not be lazy, keep aggressive, but not be over aggressive. its a lot to ask at the moment but i have faith shahar can. :D

Another embarrasing loss for Peer. She looks lost out there.

It is hard to see a talented player out so early in the draw. She is a fighter and once she finds that drive again, she will be back. It's just hard to see her in a slump. However, I too have faith she will overcome this.

Archer16

Shvedova is in good form but I think clay isn't her best surface and the scoreline is plain horrendous. :o
For god sake, not often you get someone like Meusburger in a WTA QF :(
Did you watch it on livestream?

PM, I responded to the other part of your previous post in the chat thread.

I think she picked the wrong tourney. She plays badly on clay, and should have played Portoroz. But, in her current form, nothing really matters. :(
