View Full Version : Upward trend

Even if this place is dead, it's pretty amazing how canadian women tennis is sudenly on a unprecedented upward trend. We could soon have 6 players in the top 200 (Wozniak, Dubois, Fichman, Tetreault, Marino, El Tabakh), which has to be a first! Also, they are all 22 years old or younger and at their career-high ranking (except Dubois).

There's a also a bunch of promising juniors, including Eugenie Bouchard who could become a really special player.

All in all, it's quite promising. If they all continue to improve, Canada could be a force to be reckoned with in 3-4 years.

Totally agree and summer is really looking good. It's hardcourts, the best surface for Canadians (except Fichman but she's playing on clay ATM) so I'm hoping for decent results. Aleks is already at the top, playing all big tournaments, Steph could really do some damages on hardcourts so I won't be surprise if she enters the Top100 again.

Talking about the "new ones" (Sharon, Val, Becca and Heidi), they are all young and promising. I never really saw them play but I'm very excited to watch them at the Rogers Cup.

And of course, we have Eugenie Bouchard and also Gabriela Dabrowski, who are also really young and very talented and you can go even deeper with Françoise Abanda who is dominating her age group.

I think I'm going to love this summer :D

Hi new here and an expat Canuck (more oppertunitys to ump here in the states) Man I am loving what our young girls are doing. Marino and Tetreault are on fire. Val has lost 2 games in 2 matches. 6 in the top 200 is very possable and in a year we could have 3 or 4 in the top 100 that would be amazing for Canadian Tennis. Some blue chip up and commers as well. Great to find this website and nice to see some fans of our girls. Lets have an all Canadian final in Grapvine. Steph would be back in the top 100 with a win Rebecca can be top 200 with 2 more wins.

Valerie and Rebecca will face in QFs in Grapevine! Val steamrolled her two first opponents and Becca had an amazing win over Krajicek and then demolished Sema, it will probably be a very good match, they both are in great form. Maybe we'll have a Dubois vs Marino or Tetreault in final, I hope.

Sharon on her side is in SFs in doubles with Marosi, second WTA tournament they play together after Estoril where they lost in final in a third set (super tiebreak). The Bondarenkos will be a tough challenge, but a great experience for sure.

To be honest I was beginning to thing we would never have 4 Canadians in the top 150, but the way things are going we might have 6 soon. Sharon is going to be our dirt ball M&M tourny queen for the next 10 years. She might even be able to get to the top 100 and stay there for a while if she keeps up the good clay results.

I actually see Sharon as the next Anna Smashnova. Could reach Top50, maybe even higher, by doing/winning South American/Europeean MM clay tournaments !

Really looking for how many Canucks will reach Top100 by the end of the year.

I think we'll have the two by the end of the year: Wozniak and Fichman. For some reason I think Dubois comfortably hovers around 100. Tetreault could inch closer to 100 this year, but she'll have to make her big move at the start of next season. Marino should get there too... soon enough. I give her a year or two. I honestly have no idea where El Tabakh could end up.

I have been lucky enough to see all of them live and Marino and Fichman are 50 to 100 prospects. I think Rebecca has a some more talent but Sharon does have a ton of pluck and loves to win. Stephi is going to be one of those 98 to 120 players that will get into half the slams direct and have to be a seed in qualies for the other half. I hoped she would be like Flipkins (a solid 80 to 95 type, amazing how much more $$$ you make at 80 then 110) but I do not think it will happen. Val is probably almost as good as Steph (and my favorite of the bunch) but I dont think she will get higher then 100, I sure hope she does. Heidi is a work horse and from some players I know well, very respected and admired with a ton of power. Still 160ish is higher then I really though she would get too. As we all know the higher you get the more doors to get higher open. I now see her getting to the 125 area (seed in GS qualies) but I dont think any higher.

Still 4 Canadians in the top 100 would be amazing and can happen by the end of 2010. Heck many of us were dreaming for the 6 in 200 by the end of 09 and now it could be 6 in the top 160....WHAT A SEASON

phelbyn
Oct 16th, 2009, 01:27 PM
Looks like they will all solidly finish 2009 in the top 200. Marino is the only one with significant points to lose.

So great to see them all playing consistently... Cna't wait to see if Marino, Fichman, and Tetreault mount a charge for the top 100 in 2010. I predict Fichman will make it their before the French open. Once that clay season starts, she could surge up the rankings. I see her winning a round or two at the French.
