jacqueline cako might take a year off ASU to try the pros

she won the Via Christi Pro Tennis Classic this past weekend.

Cako said another successful summer could present her with a very tough decision.

"I'm going to see how my summer goes and I might turn pro," Cako said. "I have everything set up at Arizona State. But they would hold my scholarship for a year. So I might have a last-minute decision to make."

I will make the updates.

A note about Texas. Vanja Corovic Texas' #1 singles did not make the trip with her team to their NCAA 1st and 2nd round team matches last season. It may have been for disciplinary reasons so like with USC's Gabriela Niculescu it's a wait and see approach if those players will return to their teams for 2009-10 or will they leave a vacancy.

Thanks Tennisace :worship:

Looks like Cako and her doubles partner Riske will try the pros together. Although my guess is both will start playing college tennis in the Spring.

Note: My laptop broke down on Sunday so the number of updates I can post will be minimized in the next few weeks.

Anyone know how to fix an "Operating System Not Found" error for an HP laptop dv9000 series operating on Windows Vista? :help:

Actually, I believe Riske has indeed turned pro. There was some chatter about that in Team USA sub-forum

The US Open is a popular tournament for players to turn pro cuz:
Losing in the 1st round of singles main draw pays out $19,000.
Losing in the 1st round of doubles main draw pays out $10,000.

Yeah, just read this about Cecil

I think she probably should have given college tennis at least one more year, but I hope she is successful on the pro circuit

Cecil starts $98,000 in the hole... she just gave that up in free education plus housing that she was receiving on full ride.

Let me know when she gets past $100K plus her new expenses

Cecil starts $98,000 in the hole... she just gave that up in free education plus housing that she was receiving on full ride. How did you come up with 98k?

The Out of State cost to attend Duke for tuition, fees, room & board is about $49,000 per year. Cecil has 3 years left so that education total is $147,000. :p

After someone wins the NCAA singles tournament I don't have a problem with them turning pro to pursue their dream. Although not having a degree closes the door in being a future college tennis head coach.

Thought she was a junior.. my bad

Gotta disagree with you... making $147,000 plus her living expenses now so call it $200K over next 3 years ... take a look and see how many make that?

While you could continue getting education and playing tour in summer, winter holiday...

Bad choice... but we can argue that 3 years from now when we see what her total income is then... and what her future earning power will be after she turns 28 and her career is nearing an end

How does trying the pro tour AFTER GRADUATION qualify for TAKING TIME OFF?Where do I say anything about "after graduation?"

1. If you did your homework you would have seen Kemp graduated HS in 2008 but her WTA doubles ranking was in 2007. You also would have seen Kemp tried the pros again in the Summer & Fall of 2009 after her freshman year at New Orleans before transferring to Georgia St. in Spring 2010. :o

2. This list is for players who take time off, that they could of been playing college tennis, because they tried the pros.

What exactly constitutes "turning pro"? Obviously many of these girls were pros (took money) BEFORE college so I'm just curious what the rule is about playing pro events during college. As far as I can tell, Peters hasn't won a main draw match yet in 2010. Again, I don't know the rule, but since she hasn't actually made any money, it seems that if she wanted to she could go back to college without penalty (I'm assuming she still has eligibility left)...sort of like the basketball players who declare for the draft without hiring an agent?

Can anyone help me out here?

Well my question is CAN she come back rather than why would she come back, but my answer to your question would be that assuming Jensen is actually ever around to coach her rather than ghost-coaching through that assistant coach, she should come back to learn a few things about becoming a pro. Jensen likes to claim that he is developing American talent to play on the tour and she obviously still needs a lot of improving. Peters IMO would benefit greatly from playing #1 every week at the D1 level with a team and support group behind her a lot more than she would losing in the first round of the main draw every week at obscure 10,000 tournament sites.

Like I said, if the best college players over the last 10 years can't even hack it on the tour, she might first try being the best player in her conference or at least on her own team before she leaves early (if in fact she did leave early).

 yeah I think she's done some model works as well.

As usual. I always thought her incessant 'salvo' was kinda above college level and it worked against Elena. Shots are pretty flat and she could unleash it repetitively..her height also helps, creates more angel for her..she was always offensive.. She's not a defensive player anyway so her shots gotta be good..sorry can't remember that well.

And her movement was pretty decent at that game, I think. I also think Elelna utilized some drop shots, pretty effective against Lindsey. I think Gullickson at the next game employed that tactic as well.

You can add Irina Falconi to the pro list. Not too surprised. It's kind of weird/strange to not see Georgia Tech build off of the NCAA success from a couple years ago. Sure there were injuries and Marino turning pro...I thought they would have been a school on the rise and now they are back to the bottom of the top teams.

as one of her close family members i can say she chose to go to LSU because she has a lot of family in the south. She was supposed to attend stanford but the womens tennis coach took too long to get the scholarship

- rome8790

Maybe with Falcon, Stanford could have won more NCAA team championships between 2007-2009?

What's ironic is Falcon was supposed to go to Stanford but she ends up playing the final dual matches of her college career in Taube Family Tennis Center at Stanford.

Here's Megan Falcon just completely dominating poor Hannah Grady of Long Beach St. in the video mentioned above (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_-C2UpMUFw). Pay attention at 2:00 where Falcon even does a jump smash. :worship:
