JJ always struggles against Anna's game, so if it exists at all, I think she can pull out the win.

Good Luck:bounce:

Anna was cruising up til 5-2 up in the first set... but got broken to love as soon as she had pressure on to serve for the set... another try now at 5-4. Anna's game is still there clearly, she's been in total control of this set until the pressure really kicks in to close out.

*fingers crossed*

Vespertine69
Jun 16th, 2009, 11:19 AM
Broken to 15 at the second try. Jankovic holds to 30 and goes 6-5 up. If Anna loses the set 5-7, it will hurt pretty bad. I think I have to stop looking at the scoreboard.

Blergh.... Anna did save two set points in the breaker, but Jankovic took the third and won the set 7-6(5). I hope Anna won't capitulate after missing those two golden chances to serve out the set. Anna's game can still clearly give JJ a lot of trouble, she just needs her old mental strength back in clutch situations. I used to be happy to bet on Anna in a tight third set against most players... those days seem so long ago!

Vespertine69
Jun 16th, 2009, 12:07 PM
Anna saves 5(!!) break points in the second set and then breaks JJ for a 5-3 lead - so a third chance to serve for a set appears...

Vespertine69

Wow... this time she does serve out, to love as well... now if only we were looking at the 6-2 6-3 this could have been... still, I have to be impressed with Anna's resilience even if her finishing went to crap in the first set.

Vespertine69
Jun 16th, 2009, 12:11 PM

It should be more easy, but it dosen't matter. She won! i'm happy and proud!

Anna has 1-3 against her.

Marion is very strong on grass. But Anna will be confident after todays win :yeah:

Vespertine69
Jun 16th, 2009, 02:36 PM
Blergh, I hadn't realised it was Bartoli in the next round - that's a crappy draw for Anna, she always struggles with Marion's game and on grass that will probably be heightened. Anna looks to have served pretty well against JJ and that will be the key against Marion with Bartoli's go-for-broke return attitude.

from official website:

"Chakvetadze now goes on to face Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, the runner-up at Wimbledon in 2007, in a match the 22 year-old is looking forward to playing.

"Marion is a very tough opponent on grass and she has done well at Wimbledon in the past,” said Chakvetadze. “I'll just have to see how it goes and try to play my best tennis. I am looking forward to the match.""

Very good win, Anna!:hearts::yeah::D;)

Not really surprising: Jelena is in bad form, Anna leads Head To Head clearly, Grass is by far Jelenas worst surface, Anna likes playing on Grass.:p

Go far here, Anna!!!

This is just about over, 57 25.
Then at Wimbledon about half of Anna's points come off and she leaves the top 60.
It's amazing New Haven and Wimbledon could keep her ranked so high, now it's just New Haven, and those points will be off this summer.
Then hello 10k's

HowardH
Jun 17th, 2009, 12:18 PM
Maybe she will pick up some points in Wimbledon or immediately after? And this match is not completely over, I think she could break Marion, but can she hold twice?

That's over. Now comes the draw for Wimbledon. Anna lost to a LL at the FO

HowardH
Jun 17th, 2009, 12:30 PM
And it's over. Really, we all knew Marion would be tough, and when Anna was forced to serve at 5-6 in the first it felt like it would be too difficult. That break meant that Anna served second in the second set too, and I think that put too much pressure on her. Still, she isn't playing too bad, maybe she can do something at Wimbledon.

Daszmarelli
Jun 17th, 2009, 12:35 PM
she saved 6 MP.
Good luck in Wimbledon.
She will be 31st seed I guess, soo... she can has any Williams or Safina in her third round.

Daszmarelli
Jun 17th, 2009, 12:46 PM
Actually she is the 32nd (last seed), it seems she will be in Dinara's section

Maria is the 24th :eek::inlove:

Thanks for that Daszmarelli.

If they did it logically, which I think they should (but not in this case ) then yes she would be in Dinara's section. Well Dina can be beaten on grass but she will still be quite tough. But since they computerised the draws they seem to do weird things (like putting 1st seed vs 3rd, which I think is just wrong) so all we really know is that in the rnd of 32 she will meet some fairly high seed.

Anna refused to shake Marion's hand at the end!!!

Jun 17th, 2009, 02:55 PM

HowardH
Jun 17th, 2009, 03:40 PM
Why did she refuse? Did something happen?

Ciarán
Jun 17th, 2009, 03:42 PM
Well refuse would meant Marion actually stopped her and asked her to shake her hand which I highly doubt. Anna probably just wanted to get off the court

PerfectForm
Jun 17th, 2009, 04:29 PM
I cant believe that she will be out of top 60 after Wimbledon (depending on how well she does there). She was playing so well against Venus in HK & I had so much hope for this year :(

Wintermute
Jun 17th, 2009, 05:16 PM
Hmmm. Anna went from Jankovic who I think is a good match-up for her to Bartoli who really isn't. Marion steps so far into court on those returns and then hits solid off both sides. If Marion is playing okay Anna struggles. And that would be the case unless she can serve better.
