First set was just pitiful... 3 winner, 14 UFE.. Szavay just had to be there on the court.

Second set she put more into at least, should have held serve at 4-3, 40-30, but oh well.

3R loss at RG = WIN at Wimbledon!

06 46 against a good, but for sure not a great player, is just weak.

Yesterday she played a good match, fighted , came back, just to lose like this today? :weirdo:

RG sucks as always!

May 29th, 2009, 12:48 PM
Not HER DAY? Are you kidding me? It's ridiculous Venus was seeded 3rd. How the hell can a top 3 player make so many unforced errors? Szavay did nothing special, it was Williams being completely ridiculous that won her opponent the match. Really laughable.

Temporary0369
May 29th, 2009, 12:48 PM
Wow. Venus was dreadful but Szavay played very well. She had the perfect strategy to take out Venus. Didn't try to go for too much on her serve, went for the body a lot (a tactic more people would be wise to use against Venus who stands way too far in). Made her play the big points and prolonged the rallies, something Venus just couldn't handle today. Some of those volleys in the first by Venus were just :help:

So much for her winning RG this year. Though, I must admit her quarter was packed with talented players able to upset her on clay. Also, it looked like Venus' knee was slightly injured, but even if it was - she kept playing and in the end Agnes was just better. Congrats, Agnes!

Man i have no words for the way Venus played...Szavay played well...but Venus played almost disgraceful. Its safe to say that Clay just isnt her surface....I think she had a 1 time opportunity in 2002 against Serena to win the French and now I dont think she will ever claim it before she retires..I dont see Szavay winning it either LOL...Venus legacy is at Wimbledon not the French.....so we'll just wait for her on grass....hey, IT IS WHAT IT IS..so LOL....LOVE YOU BIG VEE but time to move on to Serena now :)

May 29th, 2009, 12:53 PM
Well you can't expect more from Venus on clay, very passive and just not into the match today. Anyone blaming this loss on the scheduling should not do so because Venus was not tired out there today it was all in the head and her inability to play agressive and go for smart shots but rather make silly unforced errors.
Congrats Szavay she didnt crack under pressure but i don't really see anything special in her game where she will be doing any damage beyond this match, could be wrong though.

I am so not surprised. Typical Venus at the French. She's my favorite player on the tour, but she's horrific at the French. All I look forward to every year is Wimbledon when it comes to her.

They played once before, with Venus winning on clay this year in Acapulco...

Venus played terribly today. Just awful. Szavay didn't really have to do anything to win that match today. She does have the potential to go deep in the draw though.

I agree with what everyone is saying; this kind of performance makes a mockery out of a top three seed/ranking. :help:

The Dawntreader
May 29th, 2009, 12:55 PM
That was rank from Venus, extremely in fact. Just looked so flat and seemingly had no purpose at all. In the first set everything was flying long, but she did regroup slightly in the second. However she wasn't doing anything with the ball, and Szavay was moving Venus around far too easily. I actually haven't seen Venus play that badly since 2005 at RG.

Szavay though is some player. I predicted this year she would have a run at a Slam, and here she is. She kept the gameplan simple and she held her nerve. This is a huge step forward for her career now and it's so well deserved. I really hope she goes deep now.

So the first upset at RG. Who's next?

I'm sorry to inform you all that iSzavay has had a heart attack.

 No. but really, just a very positive match from Agnes.

As for Venus, she just never seemed to get her teeth into it. Disappointing.

Well you can't expect more from Venus on clay, very passive and just not into the match today. Anyone blaming this loss on the scheduling should not do so because Venus was not tired out there today it was all in the head and her inability to play agressive and go for smart shots but rather make silly unforced errors....

I don't know how one can say this with certainty from where we're sitting...

I'm just angry, so I apologize for offending anybody. But Venus' was horrible today. I hate it when Venus loses. It's just mind boggling how Venus just let Agnes dictate play from the start. Like she knew she was going to play defense all day. Nothing was working. Yes Szavay took it to Venus, but shit Venus was hitting error after error. Barely any winners. Agnes was lucky to play a flat Venus today. Don't see Szavay winning it all, but I see her getting to the qtrs. and losing. just what I think. but you never know. Venus: your clay season sucked! I hope you will be ready for Wimbledon. If not, you're making your 2009 season a really mediocre one

Venus was just not in this match at all. You could see that her head wasn't screwed in even when she was serving for the 5-3 lead in the second. She wasn't moving well and should have capitalized on easy overheads in the first set when it mattered. I think she missed about 3 in the space of 5 points, which is shocking.

Anyways, she can go home and prepare to win Wimbledon like she does after each 3R loss.

Deep down in my heart I knew she wouldn't win the tournament(was still holding out hope)but to be defeated in this manner is beyond pathetic for an experience top 5 player. I really don't see how the schedule effected Venus.

I mean she's played two set matches before and come back the next day to win her next match.

I don't think the schedule can be blamed for such a disgusting performance as this. The only person who is at fault is Venus. I can't believe she came out that shit today. She'll never learn and she'll never win this title.

I feel the same way! I always feel like she's doesn't care or even want to win. Why not show some anger and actually have that look in your eye that you want to win this match. She doesn't care about any slam besides Wimbledon, which is disappointing because she can win them all. Really substandard play from Vee, but Agnes played a smart, solid match. She mixed it up with spins and flat balls and moved impeccably. Of course I wish Venus had moved on, or at least taken it to three, but if she was going to lose, I'm glad it was to someone who played so well and behaved with such class as Szavay. She kept her composure so well and never got in Venus' face about kicking her butt like that. The only thing that bothered me was her questioning every close ball and being wrong every time. I completely understand questioning every once in a while, but she did it four or five times and was never right. Anyways, I hope she takes out Cibulkova and moves into the quarters!

And those stats!!!!!!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just calm down Kingsley, it's OK. Venus still has Wimbledon. This is still disappointing, but they are too many players better on clay than her. And add that to she generally having a very bad day from the first few points, missing some very easy shots. Her returns are soooooooooooooooooo LOSE! I want to cry! They suck, she throws away DOZENS of points with her crappy return game, it really needs to be worked on! Yeah, she has a terrible day, but the fact that she had a chance, although she played like shit makes it more :weirdo:
She breaks Agnes to a *4-3 lead, has GP to 5-3, I am sure she would have won the 2nd set and probably the whole match then..but she wasted it, like so often, and this is just not like a top 3 plays..she often misses 1st serves in important situations or makes UE´s...and if you wanna win a match like this today, u just have to take such chances..she is mentally just weak, that is her biggest problem...only on grass she is able to handle such situations it seems, but I doubt that it will be enough this year, sad to say, but I bet that Venus won´t win Wimbledon 2009!

Serve was being rolled in, returns were finding the back fence...it just seems like a case of classic hang over from yesterday's emotional and dramatic match against Safarova as Vee looked like she had nothing to offer today. Ah well, on to the lovely green grass of SW19!! Rest up well for that Vee;)

Huge respect to Agnes for playing a very solid match. Nice to see her really appreciate the win and hopefully she will find more consistent results now.

Destroyed? :weirdo: For once I can say with certainty that Penus destroyed herself. Poor Safrova, played 4321908094318034218 times better than Szavay. Szavay played no higher than her current rank. Pathetic, so disappointing.

From this, I gather that you know nothing about tennis. There's a reason Agnes is the seeded player, even when she hasn't been playing near her best.

No Agnes isn't going to belt the ball like Safarova from the baseline, especially against Venus, but she has a much smarter and more mature game even though she's 2 years younger. Agnes also has a bigger serve. Agnes also moves a lot better.

Once she faces a consistent clay court player, she loses!
Why didn't she draw Stosur or Bammer??

RG or AO. NEVER!!!! I gave up this year and I honestly never expected much for her here even though others thought she could go deep. Venus is not as young as she used to be so once the 2r match got delayed and she had to play today I knew she would lose. It hurts but such is life. It's just not to be I guess

I haven't seen many of Agnes' matches, but in her defense, it seems her style of play is to hit very deep until she gets her opportunity to nail a line or approach the net. She did this today, but Venus was not striking the ball well so Agnes didn't have to hit many winners. She did have a few remarkable shots though. I'm more a Venus fan than a Szavay fan, but I know where and when credit is due. Agnes was simply the better player today.

Wow! This was the most clever play i have seen from Agi in a long time! She served right to Venus's body, moved her forward then back all the time, never hit the same shot twice. A moonball, then one with a top spin followed by a flat shot to the baseline. The best way to force Venus to make UE's. Well done, girl. :yeah:

There is one more thing I have to mention: Watching the De Brito match, and after this one, I have no words for the difference. Both players were elegant, graceful, calmed. Venus took this loss like a real queen, and Agi's joy was so wholeharted but nothing agressive. Bravo ladies!

Not that the loss itself was shocking -- though I thought Venus would win the match -- but 60 64?
Anyway, this should put an end to all the talks about Venus holding the most claycourt titles etc. She WAS a good claycourter in 1990s, that's a decade ago.

It's good on hard and grass, but i would go as far as say, i would rather Vee had Agnes's first serve in this match. It just isn't placed as well as the other girls, and she won't get the easy shot to pull off the 1-2 punch. Agnes dealt with her first serves really well!

They are tennis gods! They will be missed once they retire. No star power except for Maria Sharapova. She is another tennis god. I have to say, the French crowd dislikes both Williams Sisters. I know they can't forget Serena '03, but why get on Venus' case? Even, Navratilova said so. She got annoyed they were whistling at Venus for catching a toss.

If no tennis god like Serena or Sharapova make the final, it will be another year of poor TV ratings.

Why do you people insist on grouping every fanbase here. Elena, JJ, Maria, Ana, Venus and Serena all have some negative fans and some positive fans. There are some that give credit and some that done. I've read lots of post on this forum when a top players loses that goes "such and such was horrible" "to many dfs" all this had to do was show up and people swarm to agree yet posters like yourself never chastise them. I did not see the match so my only post was basically to congratulate Aggie and move on. Some fans who watched the match think otherwise, and some have say congrats and whatever, but this is not the first time, it happens in every fan base after every big upset. I just wish when you people would be more consistent in your criticism, and don't judge a whole group based on some of it's posters.

Hey All,

Some of you so-called fair weather fans of Venus need to take a chill pill. Pop them meds - and then seek out a therapist. I mean to call Venus names - and to declare hate towards her is weak, mean spirited and so immature. It is just a tennis match. Get it?! Get a grip on life - because soon enough she will be gone from the game - and then you all can pin your hopes, dreams and lives on another player. Good luck with that, because if a tennis player can make some sick, act up and crucify Venus, a human being, over a tennis match loss - then you all are surely the one with the hangups and not her.

Venus simply had a bad day at the office. She will be fine - and she won't even consider committing suicide over this. I mean really! Hopefully, she and Serena will stay in the doubles and win it. If not, then it will be what it will be. Que sera sera.

"KEEP ON KEEPING ON - VENUS" "I LOVE YOU" "DEFEND YOUR THRONE AT WIMBY" "YOU CAN DO IT"

If no tennis god like Serena or Sharapova make the final, it will be another year of poor TV ratings.

Only because people want to see them lose to the underdog

Anyway, who cares, Szávay won and was the better player today, so saying how "Venus sucked!!11111!!!1111!!" and "Szavay just had to show up !11!!111!!!!!" won't help, just move on people, she lost.

Honestly, just enjoy the moment and the win and don't bother arguing with these people..it's impossible to win despite being right.

As for Venus, there is one good thing about this: Wimbledon is next.

true, but for either player to get to the final would be a miracle. Sharapova can do it because her draw is pretty wide open. her fighting spirit is really admirable even if she hasn't played singles in a looong time. Serena still has to prove to me she is fit. I still worry about her knee and her lack of match play on clay.

Can't agree more!

So what if she didn't play her best? How many times do losing players play great tennis? Great matches where the loser has a +10 or more winner/UE differential aren't that common. Losers of matches generally don't play well, it's not just Venus that does that. But you don't often see the uproar that's happening today because of it.
Yesterday, Safarova. :tears:

Venus was tired and it is Roland Garros, but Ágnes was making her play badly too. Szávay was hitting her shots in all different directions, disguising them, etc. She'd slice, attack, hit topspin, lob and it all threw Venus off and made her make all the errors.
She was making lots of silly errors too, it wasnt like last year where Venus was a hot mess but Pennetta brought it to her. I have no reason to believe that she will beat Cibulkova after this performance.

Amen.
No one said she played shit. :weirdo: But after about 4/5 strokes, Penus would be hitting an error.

Yesterday, Safarova.

Yeah. And she lost. Why? Because she tried to overpower/overhit Venus. The only way that a player should never play against Venus, except maybe Masha. Venus started like crap, but then - opposite what Lucie did yesterday -, Agnes didn't let her to find her rythm. She targeted Venus's weak sides, varied her shots. This is the way how a not(-yet-)top player can expect to beat a player like Venus.

this is about the top and bottom of it, and when threads pop up about venus being the best clay courter or a favourite for the french us non fans are only using common sense when we disagree.

shes a great player and will have plenty more highs in the sport but i highly doubt they will be on clay and wont be sustained for any length.

To the extent there is an explaination other than Vee didn't show up today. It seemed that Vee just let the dry, windy conditions conquer her today. The ball kept flying on her and she couldn't get control of it. After blasting 1st serves all day yesterday, she couldn't hit a full paced serve today to save her life. She couldn't get her toss right (continually caught the toss) and just pushed the serve over the net when she did.

The essential problem for Vee at RG is this: Most of the time the Venus Williams game can handle windy conditions. But windy conditions ON CLAY, where the ground beneath her is not solid, is a recipe for disaster, given her high risk game. Serena Williams was almost driven crazy by the wind in her first round match, but she has more room for error.

This loss is frustrating cause Venus is so much better then this. i can accept watching players lose when they get outplayed (like if she had lost against Lucie), but her performance today was shite. otoh, good to see Agnes getting her game together. there's a bit of hate going on for her in this thread, but you can't blame her for venus's crap play. She did what she needed to get to the next round. I'm liking her chances against cibulkova, she's looked good this week.

I'm not surprised either...well maybe a bit at the comprehensive scoreline but not at the result. I couldn't understand people tipping her for this FO..and it wasn't just fans it was commentators too (Sam Symth very much so). Venus on grass will be a different proposition altogether but she just doesn't have the game for clay to go all the way.

Most of these Williams fans are like Serena, they think the Williams are some gods on earth and if they lose, it's everything else's fault and they are way better than everyone (not just tennis-wise either).

its just common sense. Tennis matches involve two people. If people say that Venus played poorly/did the wrong things it does not mean that Agnes was just a ball machine. Agnes did what it took to win. Venus did not, and as a Venus fan i'm not happy with that and i think i am perfectly entitled to point that out.
That said you have to take into account the fact that when there losses happen fans (and Serena too) are in a state of shock and disappointment and are unlikely to be particularly objective. So give us a break and stop using it as an opportunity to bash us and Serena. Just enjoy your players prospects in this tournament.

I wanna watch some tennis today, but can't bear having to hear commentators talk about this match and keep announcing this. It's disappointing to see Venus not put up a better fight, where was her intensity?

Oh well, the game will go on. Venus will undoubtedly work her way through this loss and come back stronger for the remainded of the year off the MUD season.

I expected the scoreline to be the other way around. After her threat from Lucie, I really thought Venus would raise her level of play today and put her foot down.

This angers me because I like Venus and really dislike Agnes. I met her at the USO last year and she was not friendly at all. Plus I find her to have a very weak mind. I hope Cibulkova can put her away in the R16!

Not that shocking, Venus lost a set to Mattek and hardly won against Safarova. She's just no a good claycourt player, she's never been to start with.
Anyway, well played by Szavay, I've found a new sympathy for her :) Good luck in the next round!

Oh and :spit: # at the bagel.

But in the late 90s she used to actually win big titles on red clay, beating the likes of Martina Hingis.

And Hingis back then would tear apart a player like Szavay with no court sense or brain - just mediocre groundstrokes. It surprises me that Venus has had such poor results at the French since 2002, especially since she has added topspin to her forehand and bachand to keep them in. Unfortunately, today was a day that nothing of hers would go in, she wasn't focused enough to change the way she was hitting the ball.

No, I have. And her backhand has impressed me at times in the past. But she doesn't play well consistently. And she barely had to play today. Like I said, I'm not impressed by this result, I'm just angry with Vee. And I hope Dominika puts her away in the next round but my guess is that it will be nervy match between two women who prefer clay court tennis to other surfaces but are not accustomed to going this deep in a GS.

I was expecting Venus to step up and own this quarter after the big test from Lucie. Didn't happen, oh well, she's got Wimbledon to concentrate on after she loses in doubles here.

What players are they? Anyhow, slumping and having a good mind are two different things. She lost her confidence.

Not necessarily. During that stretch of bad results she was not able to think enough on the court to assess what was wrong with her game or her tactics, and thus change her style of play accordingly. You lose that many times in a row and you make the same mistakes over and over again?

Szavay may turn out to be an effective clay court player in her career but I do think she will struggle on anything faster that takes away from her time to set up her long strokes.

not a surprising loss, venus only managed to get to the third round by the skin of her teeth

Venus, Lucie and Agnes are my three fave WTA players of the moment. It's been exciting to see them play -- and FRUSTRATING.

Basically, Lucie played the most inspired ball, and went out the quickest.

All you people saying how pathetic Venus is, yadda yadda, I'd like to see you recover from a two-day match of the caliber of Venus-Safarova against a sharp in-form opponent who lost only 2 games in their previous match. Some of the comments here are ridiculous. :o

Well done to Agi! :D She looked great today. Though she still has nerves and a tendency to overhit. That worries me as the tournament proceeds.

Agnes is very gifted though. She's a natural talent -- her game is well-suited to clay and to grass. Her forehand is much better on clay than on hard courts. It was giving Vee fits.

Please keep winning Agnes.
