View Full Version : Anyone else here feeling Shvedova will beat Maria in their FO R3 match today?

When I looked at the schedule for Friday's matches, I noticed Maria's match was the last one on Phillip Chartier... and then suddenly I feel something doesn't feel right, like there is going to be an upset.

They have never met each other in the Tour before, and Shvedova's form this year is wretched (9-8), but somehow... something is gonna happen.

Hope I am wrong.... :scared:

Shvedova actually seems to be on the upswing, so it could be close. I'm still backing Maria, however.

Maria SHOULD win this, however she is just returning, Yaro is back up, and this is Roland Garros.

Hope not. Think not.

Especially since everyone here is going on and on about the lightning speed of Chatrier. :tape:

Yes, where it's taken Henin, Ivanovic, or Dinara to knock her out.

Unless Maria drops dead before or during the match, she will win. Next topic, please.

Who?

Maria Sharapova. She used to be in the top 10 I think. :D

Shvedova is on the way up, but Sharapova seems to be in excellent nick, and I'd back the latter to win.

On a serious note, Shvedova has NO chance in hell to touch Maria.

I don't know much about this girl, so I can't say. Though it seems that even if Maria were to struggle tomorrow, the match will probably be suspended before it finishes and Maria will be able to go back to the drawing board to refocus.

Yes, but only for a little bit. She got a few lucky draws but fell out once she had to face real competition

Maria will take nothing for granted, and will respect her opponent as
someone who could beat her. She will not be over-confident.

And she will probably take care of this in 2 sets---I can think that---but she dares not.

Tracy Austin noted her serve is different---and very effective and fast.
Maria will be focused.

Yeah me too.

#102 Sharapova def. #98 Shvedova

Not a big upset. But an upset. I think Masha can continue the upsets she's caused after her first 2 rounds

I fear for Maria in this one, Yari is obviously on a confidence high and I just hope Maria doesn't underestimate her.

Natash.
May 29th, 2009, 01:45 AM
Yari has a powerful game and really good serve so if she could hold and Maria's serve is somewhat off, she has a chance. When I've seen her, she didn't seem intimidated by the big stage.

I don't know...
If she didn't lose against Petrova she should win this one, but we can't be sure.
It wouldn't be an upset, but I'd be extremely disappointed.

No chance in hell she losing this. Though I hope she does. GO YARO!

I like Shvedova, but she better not try to beat my Maria or I'll be pissed :) Personally, I expect Maria to win this pretty easily though. Shvedova just isn't the same caliber of player. I am, however, somewhat worried about Na Li....

Gosh I hope not. Hopefully Maria wins, and in straight sets would be nice.

It wouldn't be an upset? Are you kidding? Regardless of what the rankings might say at the moment, it would be a HUGE upset if Shvedova won this.

Yup.. Venus just got lucky 5 times

 duhh. everyone knows that.
Venus is just lucky and if she didn't have her serve she would lose 0 and 0 to camille pin.

and i highly doubt Sharapova will lose to Shvedova. I see Sharapova making QF at least and it's up in the air from there.

Wolverines08
May 29th, 2009, 06:24 AM
Shvedova goes through spurts where she'll hit huge off the forehand and then she'll just roll the ball over, Maria is going to be on top of her too much.

Shvedova has the game, but not the head to win. Simple as that.

Sharapova doesn't want to spend too much time on court, she will win in 2.

Reading through this thread it is pretty clear that actually very few people think Yaroslava Shvedova has much of a chance. Some people infact would, it appears, go as far as to say she has virtually no chance at all.

Personally I have no wish to change any of these individuals minds. I like it this way. If Yari loses, well then there is no shame in losing to the great Sharapova, it was quite expected. And if Yaris wins.....()....oh, but wait, of course Yari won't win, that couldn't possibly happen, could it?

Nope, Maria 6-4 6-3, but she will lose to Venus in the QFs

I have no worries. I'm confident Maria will get to the QFs fairly easily. When she gets there, it is when she is against Venus/Agnes/Domi that I will start to worry about her losing.

Shvedova and ANYONE on clay versus Sharapova will have a chance to beat her. It will be about execution and making Sharapova move.

It is safe to say Sharapova is the overwhelmingly favorite. Her groundstrokes, serve, and mind alone will her to victories regardless of the surface.

It will be close, though.

Anyone? WTF Sharapova is hitting way too hard, I don't think a lot of players can handle that, def. Not.

May 29th, 2009, 09:35 AM
Very slight chance that Shvedova is serving and hitting the ball really well and blitzes Sharapova.

Slightly bigger chance that Sharapova delivers yet another one of her lazy, unfocused performances (e.g. vs Alla K. at Wimbledon last year), is woeful on ROS and loses the match before you can say "lousy footwork".

85-15.

well, Shvedova has been around for a few years and has no history of big wins or inspired performances in GS. For this reason I feel that Masha is pretty safe for this match. She could even slide through another round after this without too much trouble.

90 percent Sharapova wins today.
