Roland Garros
Jankovic gets a rankings bump
"number one player in the world but seeded number 5 here"
"no.5 seed and no. 1 player in the world is through"
"Haha, someone please tell Fred that seeds and ranks are the same at Roland Garros. He is still calling Jankovic the no.1 in the world."
"And the set goes to the number 1 player, seeded number 5 here."
""It must be such a great experience for young Elena Rybarikova to play the #1 in the world and No. 5 seed here."
"it must be nice hearing yourself introduced as the world number 1"

Sveta, the dominant frontrunner! - guest appearance by Nicole Pratt, so really a 'Prattism' but I had to mention it anyway
"After Kuznetsova lost to Serena in the AO 09, blowing a big lead, she was asked if 'Kuznetsova has a reputation for blowing leads?' and Pratt said 'No, I don't think so.'"

Didn't play like that in the 'good ole days'...
"When Diatchenko/Johansson were at 6-6 in the third set the other day, he thought it was a third set TB"
"When one of the girls had game point at 5*-6 in the THIRD SET, he said, "to send it into a tiebreak."

Those Eastern European pronunciations are hard for everyone, Fred!
"He called Djokovic "Djokovike" and then something else really random"
"Oh, and also his picks for the tournament are 'Young Wozniacki and Azarenko'"

Julie Groth...

BombShEelLL PREDICTIONS!
"He said "I know this is a long shot, but I think Rafa will win" or something like that"
"When Bernard Tomic was down 6-1 2-2 in the second set, Fred said...........'look out for an upset there'"

Keeping us updated with the latest rule changes!
"they play best of five in slams now."

If you're from Eastern Europe and you're female, you're Elena. Unless you're Jarmila, then you're Julie. - Wally Masur joins Fred here to create a Fredism-Masurism collaboration!
"He called Magdalena Rybarikova "Elena Rybarikova"...mind u the other day Masur called Dushevina "Elena Dushevina""
"It must be such a great experience for young Elena Rybarikova to play the #1 in the world and No. 5 seed here. "

A Canuck & a Dane, the Wozniacki sisters
"before when they showed wozniak's score he said "this is wozniak, there's a couple of wozniacki's but this is wozniak who is actually from canada"

Sound it out, Fred! 'FER-NAN-DO' ≠ 'FRAN-CIS-CO'
"fernando gonzalez is now francisco gonzalez"
"Oh yeah francisco ! I thought i misheard that."

What's that letter there, hmm, I'll just make it an 'H'
"When the result of Czink df. Bammer was brought up, he said 'Sybille Hammer'"

The Master of Segways
"You can't slide on hard, and it's even harder to slide on clay...BUT it's ALL Roger Federer now!"

Wozniacki to win the tournament!!!! But which Wozniacki, and which tournament...
"My pick for Wozniacki is getting better"
"He also says that Wozniacki is his pick to win..... but then covers himself by saying, maybe not this year but in the next 18 mths. Surely a pick is your pick to win the current tournament?"

Lu Yen-Hsun from... ... ... Asia?
"he saw the flag of taiwan next to yen-hsun lu's name and just guessed it was thailand instead because he didn't recognise it"
"he said taiwan, and then said no that's probably thailand...like no player could come from taiwan or it didn't even exist or something"

Just distract them by calling her 'The Burrito', Fred. They won't even realise you got her country wrong then!
"michelle larcher del brito from Colombia"

Russazakhstanoland is such a dominant force in women's tennis right now!
"there were 14 russian women in the main draw here, and that's just russia, that's not including kazakhstan, or uzbekistan, or poland"

Tommy Haas from Jeremy-Jeremy-Jeremy ERROR! ERROR! ERROR! REBOOTING IN 3, 2, 1...
"And we're gonna look at another match, Tommy Haas from Jeremy-jeremy *takes a break*...Germany. Versing Jeremy Chardy from france."

Giddy up, Freddie!
"when azarenka was warming up against safina,
he goes 'azarenko's wearing... what do you call them? jodhpurs?'
and the lady commentator goes 'leggings, fred, they're called leggings... do you have any?'"

Wimbledon
Honestly, Fred, do you not care about women's tennis that much that you DON'T EVEN HEAR WHO WINS THE MAJORS? :o
"He just said: Maria played great to win Wimbledon in 2004. Too bad she hasn't been able to repeat that. It's her only grand slam win."

Freddie, most smiley faces I've seen have two eyes and aren't upside down...
"During Djokovic's match, the camera showed a closeup on his racquet and you could see the vibration dampener quite clearly. It was the HEAD symbol, but Fred said, 'A very happy face there!' as if it was a smiley face."

My personal favourite from Fred today was saying that the guy in the Hawthorn AFL jersey had come all the way from Tasmania to watch the Aussies during the Stosur match. He corrected himself later on though.

For those outside of Australia, Hawthorn (which is in Victoria) has a major sponsor in the Tasmanian tourism board and as part of their agreement, play around 3 matches each year in Tasmania. Fred was alluding to the fact that on the jersey, there is a logo of Tasmania on the left hand side but incorrectly assumed that he was a Tasmanian because of the jersey. At least he knew that Hawthorn had won last year's premiership and said that his AFL knowledge was not the best.

But you gotta love Fred though.

Exciting young players: Every year the commentators don't realise that nowadays the tour is totally comprised of what they classify as "young players" - roughly 25 and under. The majority of the top 100 are under 25! Of course everyone is going to be young by that definition. Any player who they haven't heard much about who gets through a couple of main draw matches is automatically young and exciting at the time of the match.

Agreed about Sam Smith, she really knows her stuff! :yeah:

It's not like this is a one off. I doubt she was just 'reading off the prompter' when she introduced Tim, one of Channel 7's cameramen as 'Tim the Tool Man- oops!' or when she announced the 05 womens final as 'Serena Davenport vs Lindsay Williams'. Serena hit a backhand and let go of the racquet with one hand, and Fred and Kerryn Pratt (his fellow commentator) both commented on the impact the hand injury was having on Serena. Fred's choice of words was... interesting to say the least.

"I don't think it's so much the calf muscle, I think it's been the hand today. *brief pause* Two H's - hand and Henin."

I posted it in the results thread but I suppose it belongs here aswell. When crossing to cover the end of the Scheepers-Johansson match, Fred stated that both woman are "Young lasses with Johansson making her Grand Slam debut here at Roland Garros 2010". Not so much a funny comment but more a horrible sentence filled with inaccurate information. Seriously. Their job isn't that hard, go research and find out a little bit about who you are covering in a match so that you sound relatively smart.

End rant.

I still can't get over the "came back after about 3 years off". :bigcry: She's 39!!! Does he really think someone would play until they're 36, and then retire, and then decide that playing for about 20 years straight wasn't quite enough and they'd like to make a comeback???

God Fred has been killing me today, I used to really like him but now he just talks shit, actually worse than shit, he says stuff that my dad who never watches tennis could say.

In the Stosur v Benesova match I was waiting for him to say something about her backhand, since she hit more backhand winners in that match than she did at the whole tournament last year. But he said nothing at all. Terrible.

Wally is ok, I don't think he dislikes women's tennis, he just seems to get frustrated by it.

Josh Eagle is really the only one with any appreciation of women's tennis, but after all he is married to Barbara Schett.

The worst thing about the French Open coverage is that they use the super signal, so Fox Sports can;t pick what matches they show and why they always go to commercial when they are about to show another court, its so cheap.

This morning Fred just totally ignored some matches when he was reading through the schedule, he is so old. And has anyone else noticed how many times he's mentioned people wearing hats and sun screen today? hahah its like the most important thing in the world to him. Who cares about Schiavone when people could be getting mild sun burns.

Every time he commentates a women's match all he does is criticise and rant on about how incompetent they are while constantly comparing them to "the men". The only player he'll ever give credit to is Sam Stosur. I wonder why that is.

The guy is just hate personified. I really can't stand him.

It's quite uncomfortable watching Wally sometimes, he can't seem to watch a Women's match without commenting on the superiority of the men's game. Still, he has good insight to the techniqalities(sp?) of the game and he's alright when you just accept the fact that he doesn't like watching the WTA.
