Well luck plays its part, as does not breaking in the middle of a match you were winning, its not all the tennis, is the physical side too.

However, to say Lena got off the hook big time is an understatement, she should be going home now, but has been given a chance, very much like 2004 indeed, hopefully she can get her shit together and improve.

This really is not the way I wanted this and this victory is hollow to say the least and means nothing at all, sure I am not gonna lie and say I am not pleased shes in 3rd round, but she truly didnt deserve to be at all, very very sad end.....

One nice thing, Lenas behaviour lately has left a lot to be desired but she was very good with Jelena and tried comforting her, she knew what it must have felt like and must also feel like shit too, she played awful, she was losing to the better player on this day but is still in the competition...

Jelena was hitting her BH so well. Not sure how the injury came, but I am sorry for her and her fans. Elena was outplayed in the first set, it was weird as she had more winners than Dokic in the 1st set, but higher errors too. Elena did look nervous, but the 2nd set, she'd taken it upon herself to grind out the points. The 2nd set would have been competitive at the least.

Elena, this was a tricky one, and it would have been nicer to see you gut out a win. Raise your level for the next match. Very nice sportsmanship by Elena, she stood with her and gave her a nice 'rub' and waited until she was ready to leave the court. :)

This is even more heartbreaking because Jelena is coming back from injuries and endless slump, she struggled to find her form after the Australian Open and winning this with such amazing play (upset 4th seed in a GS) would have been a huge step forward in her comeback.

I was hoping for the same, but I don't think she could have stretched out the second set long enough for a darkness delay before the third.
Indeed, play will last for another 45mins at least. With Jelena tanking it would have been over then.

Wanted Elena to win obviously, but this is a very hollow feeling at the moment.

Bad that this happens to anyone, but particularly bad that it happened to Jelena. The girl deserves a break after all she's been through. It looked like she had some motivational issues after the Aus Open this year, but she was playing really well in this tournament, so I think she'll be back.

I was hoping for the same, but I don't think she could have stretched out the second set long enough for a darkness delay before the third.

Back in the day when tennis was far less physically demanding players used to totally tank games and sets due to fitness issues thinking they could get their cramps out and whatnot.

A bit of a shame she probably didn't even think to do this. Too much pain.

Back in the day when tennis was far less physically demanding players used to totally tank games and sets due to fitness issues thinking they could get their cramps out and whatnot.

A bit of a shame she probably didn't even think to do this. Too much pain.

Wouldn't she have only had to go another 15 minutes?
45 minutes I think it was. And even if she could drag it out, she was having trouble even sitting down. Staying out there and not being treated would be bad in the long term for her. As it is, hopefully she may be able to play Wimbledon.

It depends. They could have ended up playing as late as 9:30 (3:30 EST).

Yeah, I just noticed three courts are still on. You can never tell on television. Is it brighter out today? I thought they quit before 9 last night.

All this is moot anyway.

I may be a notorious Dokic hat0r, but situations like these are just extremely saddening. Good tennis is good tennis, no matter who is producing it. Dokic was definitely producing some good tennis, so it is very sad to see a match that should have been in the bag end this way. I can't express my feelings any differently than the posters of the eleven pages before this one, but I send out the deepest condolences to both Dokic and her fans.

It's been a funny year for JD. She seriously challenged Safina in the AO quarterfinal, and now had Dementieva on the ropes.

But between the slams she's been, to say the least, lacklustre.

Assuming the medical trouble is nothing long term, though, we have reason to be optimistic.

Sobbing Dokic retires with back injury while leading
* Dementieva says she did not deserve to go through
(adds quotes)
By Sonia Oxley
PARIS, May 28 (Reuters) - Jelena Dokic left the court in floods of tears on Thursday after retiring with a back injury while leading by a set in her French Open second round match against Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva.
"It's a shock and a disappointment," the Australian former world number four told a news conference after quitting with the score at 6-2 3-4 against.
"I felt like I had the match in my hands and I was doing well and even if I didn't win, I was playing really well ... I felt like I probably played the best tennis that I played this year."
Dokic, appearing at her first French Open since 2004, appeared to pull something in her lower back at 2-2 in the second set and went off court to receive treatment from the tournament trainer.
She returned to break Dementieva despite crying between points.
"I just went down and couldn't come back up. I don't know what it is yet. It was very painful, and I just hope it's not too serious," said Dokic, who sobbed uncontrollably into her towel after retiring while Dementieva came over to comfort her.
Dokic, who rolled her ankle in her last-16 match at the Australian Open, said she was not having much luck at the grand slams on her comeback trail after a troubled few years.
"Obviously it's not my time at the grand slams," said Dokic. "I'm not 15 anymore, so it's time probably to take more care now and I just really, really hope it's nothing serious.
"I was supposed to play doubles tomorrow. I don't think that will happen."
Dementieva was full of sympathy for her opponent.
"It feels bad to win this way and it must be hard on her. She was very solid it's bad luck for her," the Russian, who next faces Dokic's compatriot Samantha Stosur, told reporters.
"I didn't deserve to win this match"
