Fantastic from Maria! She was hitting extremely well in the first set and left Nadia kind of shell shocked. In the second she lost her way a bit and was quite nervous, hitting errors off both wings, allowing Nadia to hit some beautiful shots. In the 3rd, wow, she really woke up and there were flashes of some of her best tennis, pummelling down the line, cross-court. I am so happy, she done so well today and if she does meet Venus in QFs, she will take her out, without a doubt :bounce:

Nice, nice, nice fight from Maria. The serve was clutch, believe it or not. And I actually missed her brand of consistent aggression.

It'd be a great story to have the Natural Champions of the Tour coming into form by the 2nd week. Would make for great matches, too.

C'mon Maria, Serena and Venus!!!

This is the loss that's hurt me more since Rubin lost that match against Dementieva at the WTA Championships.

It would've been such a confidence boost for Nadia...she played some great shots...had the match almost in her pocket with those 2BP's to go 5*-2.

A day to forget and on to the men's draw :D

Ah yeh, congrats Maria.

Nadia has/had the game to beat Sharapova ... can't execute.

Too true, that's the bottom line of this match. Nadia in the second and parts of the third was just dismantling Pova. So many areas to pick on, especially on clay. Once she lost that 4-2 game the match was over. Credit to Nadia for hanging on as long as she did but there was never any doubt. Sharapova only needs one chance and she's back in the match. It's incredible how she was out for so long yet still could compete that hard so soon. Gotta respect that.

wow, what a fascinating match:worship: It looked as if Nadia had the upper hand in the 3rd set but Maria would just not fold being the champion she is. Now a Venus-Maria quarterfinal would be  but a long way to go yet before that could happen.

Who cares, it's sharapova's day so please leave.

I am happy for Maria that she won. In fact I was supporting her more than I did Nadia during the match. It was a drama-filled contest that I enjoyed very much. But happiness is one thing. Over-excitement is another. And just saying that she would 'for sure' take out another player in a round she still has to reach 'for sure' shows over-excitement. I would ask Maria fans to exert prudence when declaring who and who she would defeat in some round. Not only has she yet to reach the quarterfinals, but other players also have games which are capable of beating her.

Pressure got to her in the last game. Bad luck.
Tough to beat a player that you've got a bad record against.

Sharapova showed why she's a champ.

Skies the limit for Maria if she stays healthy

well she's back on court, yeah.... that's all

She IS, trust me, she can def. do great on HC and grass, and I think her serve helped her a lot, no matter what people say about her serve, it was a huge weapon today.

InsideOut, it's just excitement, don't take it seriously, we know Maria's limits on clay, we're just happy right now, and yes there is a looooooong way before QF or SF, plus don't forget Safina is on Ivanovic's road.

To talk a bit about the match :
Nadia is a shadow of herself. She used to move well for her size (especially on clay) but her movement was worse than Maria in the first. She did nothing with the bball and Maria played quite well.
In the 2nd Nadia raised her level but that wasn't impressive at all yet Maria totally felt appart, started to make ue and was slower.Nadia had the match on her racket in the 3rd until 4-2 and these 2 BP.After that, the end was never in doubt.Maria was tired, not moving well at all, made ue and still Nadia never managed to take advantage.Given Maria's form the obvious tactic would have been to move her around but Nadia started doing it only in the last few games (a bit too late lol).Maria did what she does best : she fought, knowing that Nadia would choke it in a way or the other.

Two conclusions for me :
As sad as it is, Nadia will probably end her career as a very talented underachiever with the brain of dead fish.
Maria's level is not good(despite showing some good things here and there)but she's winning some matches and that was her goal (slowly gaining rythm and confidence). It will be much more interesting to see how she'll be playing on grass than here imo.

Whenever Maria is down a set a break or whatever, I try to think of what's going through her mind at that very moment--I figure it is very rarely anything about missed opportunities--it's like completely positive--every point---just taking it point by point and never getting down on herself or negative--that's what I admire most about her. She truly has a will of steel!

That's a long way off. Let's see how Sharapova handles back to back three set matches. She's, in a way, lucky she kept her foot on the accelerator long enough to finish the first set quickly and dump the second quickly as well. The match took 2h12m, not terrible.

I don't know much about Shvedova, but her statistics from today are extraordinary. I'd think Maria could outclass her, but she may be in for yet another fight.

Please and I give Maria a lot of credit for living up to the hype, but as soon as a player see: Aga Radwanska/ Serena Wiliams for example believes that she can win, then it is all over. I think many players are surprised (even at this late date) with Maria's never say die attitude. It is much the same with Serena. Players think, she has to lose this time, instead of concentrating on themselves (I have put myself in this position to win).

P.S. I actually called Maria in the qfs because I knew that (after Vera withdrew) that there would be noone in her section mentally and physically ready to take it to Maria.

Masha was slower than usual, but so Petrova. She used her topspin groundies too late. And asking the umpire for checking that call was the end. You don't do that against somebody who owns you in such a complicated point.

It is funny how Maria is injured every match she's played, excuse me lost, for the pasted 3 years. I would have believed you more if you said Aga was too clever and Serena is much better. But whatever, here we are talking about grass when we are still playing on clay.

You can always pinpoint a significant change in fortune in matches with just one shot. For the past two service games, Petrova had been cruising through until 6-7 15-0 up where she missed that sitter of a forehand. It wasn't like Sharapova would have had a play on it either, all she had to do was slot in in the space. Like Sam Smith said, Sharapova has an antenna for quick momentum shifts. She was relentless thereafter.

Petrova played the better tennis. Sharapova played the better match. Thrilling final set.

This match was AMAZING!!! I was really looking for forward to this match because I figured since Petrova has been playing crappy lately that Maria had good chance of pulling off the upset, but I wasn't expecting either of them to actually play this good... My god... Maria had me really stressed out there at a few points. I think I almost died a few times  I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy she won this :woohoo: And now she has Shvedova next, who she should theoretically be able to beat fairly easily... And plus Venus might lose to Safarova which would further open up Maria's draw. I'm still not sure that Maria can beat Na Li, but if she can she'll probably make it all the way to the Semis, which would match her best performance at the French. This is freaking AWESOME :bounce::banana::woohoo::inlove:

what a great match . obviously Nadia choked at the end but she still played an extremely high quality match. i dont like sharapova at all but wow she is such an amazing competitor - strking the ball so well even though her movement was very slow. petrova really should have used some drop shots i thought! really sad she lost :(

It is funny how Maria is injured every match she's played, excuse me lost, for the pasted 3 years. I would have believed you more if you said Aga was too clever and Serena is much better. But whatever, here we are talking about grass when we are still playing on clay.

Well I know Maria's service, when she hit 17DF, there IS clearly STH wrong, no matter what people think, I know it.
Aga was clever but Maria was still injured, it was so obvious, good for Aga, but she has ZERO chances against a healthy Maria, and Serena is better, at least, on surfaces where she faced Maria, I'm still waiting somme meetings on grass courts and very fast HC, where I think Maria's game is more effective. Wait and See.

That's a load of :bs: , so to you Maria won her 300+ matches only because her components didn't believe that they could win? All those wins have nothing to do with her skills or talents or great play? It's so simple that once you believe you can win you can beat a three slam winner, that's it, easy.

I understand Serena was a better player when she beat Maria, but putting Aga Radwanska at the same place as Serena? After the win in the first match, shouldn't Radwanska believe more that she could beat Maria in their next match? With that magic "believing is achieving", shouldn't she toast Maria right away? But no, she didn't, obviously that believing thing was not working, I wonder why.

They only showed her during the first set but she looked happy since she was laughing about something with Sveta.
