Oh dear. I got to say, I may not like her, heck I can't think of a time ever I have been so put off by a tennis player (maybe Berdych comes closest) but credit where credit it due. Michelle is one strong girl in the head. She is seriously mentally tough. I'd say her mental toughness is every bit as ferocious as her famous shriek. And boy, it isn't hard to see how determined she is. In terms of sheer will to win, and determination on the tennis court I really think Serena Williams is the only active player in her league.

Yeah, okay her game may be one dimentional, but that focus, determination, unflapable will and refusal to let go once she has her teeth in a match make her a very formidable player. Additionally with that will, I rather suspect a lot of the glaring shotcomings of her game will be overcome in the next few years. She is only 16 after and when and that determination and mental toughness is actually a more valuable quality for a tennis player than a flashy backhand or a big serve. Right now it is looking like she has a heck of a great future. God help us all.

It may seem like a bold statement, but following her results so closely - it's not too far from the truth! And from such a young age she can fight back from a set and breaks down against TOP 20 players. She is something special, mentally! I just wish she had a decent serve :tape:

Personally I'm kind of glad she doesn't have a decent serve  and I pray she will never get one although I suspect in time she will develop a pretty satisfactory delivery, even if it takes 3 or 4 years.

Wow! Michelle has never fallen before the 3rd round of a slam in her entire career! More impressive than Serena's record. Also, it took Safina 3 sets to beat Jie on clay and it only took Michelle 2! Larcher De Brito> current #1 and Serena?

I hope she doesn't sit back next match because of Rezai's relatively low ranking. She seems to zone out when she's not playing the big girls.

Quite a shock, but seeing De Brito and Zheng playing on clay, I can understand. Clay is just not Zheng's surface.

Seeing De Brito the first time, she is a Wozniacki 2 to me. Solid groundstrokes, good movement, not so good serve. She pretty much looks like Caroline in her RG dress. With a little prettier face. :)

I've heard a lot about her grunt, but - despite the fact that i generally hate grunting - I didn't find it annoying. It was rather a mixture of funny and sexy. Maybe because of her age, i don't know. Whatever. I think her game style will be a lot more boring than her personality. :)

But she really lacks of sportmanship :at 3-4 Adv Zheng in the first set that ball was clearly in,Michelle knew it and everybody on the court saw it IN, Zheng was complaining to the umpire and then lost all her concentration, ok that's the game but...

Based on what I have seen, I don't tink so. Her game is just OK for all surfaces. Maybe she doesn't know or doesn't like clay yet, but I think she'll be as good on clay as on other surfaces. And if her serve won't improve (a lot), then maybe even better... ;)

Have you seen her in clay?

I just saw that last set against Zheng. It was way better than what I saw last year in Roehampton that's for sure. Of course she is a year older. We will see how she does this year she is obviously improving but I do think her game is less suited to grass than any other surface by a substantial margin.

I just saw that last set against Zheng. It was way better than what I saw last year in Roehampton that's for sure. Of course she is a year older. We will see how she does this year she is obviously improving but I do think her game is less suited to grass than any other surface by a substantial margin.

oh OK :D:yeah:

I bet Jie was thinking about rankings again. She keeps having these great opportunities and not really taking advantage.

Im just so disappointed right now, and she has all those points to defend at Wimbledon :(

I will never watch one of her matches without pressing the mute button first, but I can honestly say that I believe players will complain about her 'grunt' within the next couple of years and try to get her silenced. Sharapova is one thing, this girl takes it, to quote the legendary MadTV skit, to "a whole 'nutha level."

:sobbing: It needs to be early; like now! If they wait too long, it will become part of the norm, and thus much harder to change. And worse, more young players will take it to the next level!

How does Michelle play? What's her game like?

Jie's comments on Michelle's scream,"She always sceamed loudly during play, which may misled my thoughts.Actually her groudies are not so hard as what her scream revealed.I prepared to hit too early and that caused some over-hitting returns. Perhaps that's her game style, and I have nothing to complain about."

Jie is probably the nicest, most gracious person on tour so when she makes comments like this it must be bad.

She's so nice she even tries to justify the screams at the end :awww:

Watch the video. The ball at 4-3 ad at Zheng is clearly in. Michelle seems to know that but didn't say anything.

Are the linesman and the umpire blind or something? I'm really disappointed this happened in a grand slam. I wish all the clay courts have hawk eye!!

5-3 and 4-4 is a huge difference. Seems like Jie is affected too.

That's so unfair to Jie !!!
how can the umpire be so careless ?
and Michelle ?!! She has NO sportsmanship AT ALL !!

as i recalled, the match between Jie and Kuzy in China Open last year, they both helped each other to use the hawk eye just to correct the umpire. Now that's what sportsmanship is all about !!

InsideOut.

I watched the video...and if you could understand Chinese, I think what the guy said after showing that clip was more important. He mentioned how important it is for a player to regroup quickly after such situations as umpires and linesmen are humans and prone to human error, instead of letting a bad call affect them. Regardless of whether the call was good or bad, Jie did not concentrate after that point and promptly lost the match, and it is because of that, not merely because of this line call, that she lost the match.
