This year too.
I don't think she will ever come back.

I didn't see this match
But Nicole should try someting else
She is a brainless ballbasher. Is not patient AT ALL. She should try to be more like Jankovic and get every balls back and then finish the point with a winner . But of course, she can't run and her movement is horrible, so she can't do that. (She could do it, but she won't train as hard as she should to get better)

I was never convinced how good Nicole was to begin with, but this is just sad. For anyone who's seen her play lately, what exactly is wrong? I presume she's just hitting a ton of UEs or what?!

Wasn't she a Wimby QFinalist last year? She better pray for some form and a good draw.

For all the hating against Nicole, I think we should all take a moment to reflect upon all the great disappointments of tennis and how impressive it is to stay atop the game for years. All these flakes like Vaidisova, Golovin, etc. make players like Davenport and Sanchez-Vicario even more impressive.

Firstly, stats for UE's at the French Open include forced errors IIRC.

Unforced errors are usually the result of the other player putting the ball where they don't like it or changing the pace etc. which is what Virginia is good at.

Anyway, it's not like matches depend on Nicole's winners and errors.

Playing a two set tennis match on clay and making only 9 errors is pretty good to me. Not easy to keep ones errors to that low a total. Takes talent. And what exactly should she have done if her opponent is hitting error after error. Copy her and get into contest to hit more winners? I don't think so.

-2 difference between winners and errors > -28 difference between winners and errors always. The game of tennis isn't about hitting more winners than your opponent it is about having a better winner to error ratio than your opponent. Great stats for VRP actually.

well.. it's.. for example this match was all about if Nicole will hit more winners than UEs or not.. you see she would crush VRP if her winners/ues ratio would be at least balanced..

Hardly. Check the stats.

Very good idea. I just checked the stats. The stats say Ruano-Pascual has now won 6 out of her last 9 matches on clay against players ranked outside the top 50.

Virginie is past her prime. At 35 years old all tennis players are past their prime, in singles at least. However the stats indicate that while VRP's game is no longer effective against top 50 opponents against those ranked lower she is still very competitive, even at 35, which I must say is pretty remarkable. Virginie beat Garbin on clay this year and Rodionova last year. Vaidisova is hardly playing better than Garbin or Rodionova so there is no reason it should be a surprise that Virginie can beat Nicole too.

Anyone in the draw would have beaten Nicole today. I underestimated how low Nicole had sunk, not how much of a threat VRP is.

May 26th, 2009, 06:24 PM
Vaidisova has fallen quicker than she did to break-through. It's quite a low for her. Not nice to see such obvious talent in a seemingly irrepairable decline.

VRP is reasonably competitive on clay, but i didn't expect a win today. Her work ethic is still endearing though as is her professionalism. To be still getting wins at 35 at Slams is commendable, even if Vaidisova was a complete mis-match for anyone today.

I have a piece of advice for Vaidisova fans:

Stop expecting her to win these matches and you won't have your heart broken every time. She is obviously not any good anymore, so losing to players like Ruano Pascual who can make her hit a lot of balls is expected. It would have been more of an upset if she had actually won the match, so quit your antics and saying, "Nicole is done." Trust me, she was done a while ago.

Dave.
May 26th, 2009, 08:39 PM
Some of Nicole's fans need to accept that she is simply not good enough at this level and that she lost to a better player, a player who actually lasted on the tour and is still lasting. It's not like she isn't trying (else she wouldn't be there) or "she's half retired zomg!!", it's just Virginia is better. She actually looks to do something in these points rather than spray errors all day long and tactically she's much more able. People need to stop trying to put every one of Nicole's losses on her "slump" or "lack of dedication" and badrepping anyone who says otherwise.
