You have to understand that she was playing a weak opponenet today, an opponent hitting quite alot of short balls for Maria to attack on.

Lets just wait and see Maria play someone with a better game.

Serve was shaky as usual but has improved from Monday. Her groundstrokes were excellent and she returned very well like she did on Monday. Still made quite a number of silly errors though that she definitely should cut down on. Defence was pretty impressive though.

Her serve is not as powerful as it used to be, but no real surprise there. It's still strong and she had 77% 1st serves in.
Her return is great and her groundies are rock-solid most of the time! Best shot today was her fhdtl imo!

she played really well, but could have played better!! her opponent didnt do much, maria had a mini collapse that gave darya two games, but other than that maria was great. but i think she needs to pick it up another gear to beat bondarenko... great to watch if you're a maria fan!!

Congratulations, but did anyone honestly expect Kustova to trouble Sharapova? She is ranked in the 200's and I think this is only her second WTA maindraw...I think Bondarenko will take her out in the next round.

Her groundies and returns are as great as they used to be. On the other hand, her serve is a mess!

Indeed. Maria should not have lost those 2 games, to be honest. :( She lost her serve with a double fault. :o Still needs to work on stabilizing the serve but she's playing OK. However, Alona was very impressive today and the next match should give us a more accurate indicator of where she is right now. Kustova today had a nice backhand, an OK serve, a good smash, but a very weak forehand and clueless net play. In other words, a slower Alona Bondarenko without net play and a weaker forehand. ;)

6-3 6-2. :worship: Maria has played her twice and neither time was it easy. 6-2 5-7 6-4 at Indian Wells and 6-7(9) 6-3 6-2 at Amelia Island, both last year. So we can be sure it will be close.

I honestly prefer her 07 one. This one yielded even more DFs. :(
she's not making as DFs with thin one as with her 08 serve (RG 08 )
And I think her serve (with time) will get better
2-3 months ago, there were some videos of her trainings at the Nick Bollitieri academy and her serve is now way better than the one she had 2 months ago

It's so great just to have her back. I watched highlights of the match, and it does not seem like her opponent really had the game to bother her at all. I'm still so worried about the serve, because it is one of her biggest weapons. Without it, I'm not sure she can reach the level of success she had before. We'll see how this new service motion holds up in the coming months. The old one was so great though!

For some players succes comes from constant evolution (see justine's about 14 different serve motions/forehands)

I thought she looked quite impressive, although against this opponent anyone from the top 20 would probably have looked impressive. Bondarenko should be a much better indicator.

How I missed those cocky Pova fans :rolleyes:

The reason why Pova won so easily was Kustova's poor game. Those dropshots were simply awful and embarrassing and gave Pova every opportunity to hit an easy winner.

The match against Alona will probably be a real test for Pova and her shoulder :wavey:

Kustova's Last Stand! :O

Well, good for Maria, she's got a couple of matches now. Bondarenko is definitely the toughest opponent she will play before the final and probably in the tournament so that will be a good test.

it will be interested to see how she goes against a player who can put her under pressure. She couldn't have asked for a more cushioned draw to the quarters. That's not to say she isn't playing well, but she needs to beat Bondarenko.
