Quite a good list really. Most of the top juniors have entered and if you mix them in with the likes of Kerkhove, McHale, Gavrilova, Holland, Diyas, Keys, Dabija and Rogowska it will shape as a tough tournament.

I wonder how focused Robson will be here considering she will be HUGE in the UK during the grasscourt season. Wouldn't surprise me if she suffered an upset loss early or she opted not to play. She is going to have heaps of pressure/expectations/hype to deal with in Birmingham/Eastbourne/Wimbledon...

WTF is Pervak doing in another Junior Grand Slam? She is way too good to be moping about in juniors still. And she can't use the excuse this time of coming all the way to Australia only for one or two tournaments.

Mladenovic is shaping as one of the form players for Junior Roland Garros. She also has a great shot at winning a match in the senior main draw. No doubt she will be under a lot of pressure, though, as the main hope for France.

Will be interesting to see how Gavrilova and Keys go...will Keys live up to the hype from her impressive WTA debut in Charleston? Gavrilova has been moving quietly up the rankings and is now within striking distance of putting her name up in lights alongside Robson.

My money is on Lertcheewakarn to have another brain fart from diddiling around in juniors and she will be lucky to make the quarter finals. She should be playing the Japanese 50ks and Korean 25ks to build her senior ranking. Don't really know why Dabija is playing either...

interesting field. I noticed that Robson is the only 1994 player in the top 15 players. Madison Keys is the youngest: only 14! At the same time, I remember that Hingis won it the first time at the age of 12 years and 9 months!!!!! It is simply amazing and seems impossible today... I wonder why I believe that..? In terms of WTA ranking, the best ranked is Ksenia Pervak WTA 150, followed by Dabija 306.

It looks to me like most of the top 30 on ITF is going to play. Could not be much stronger field than this. Ksenia Pervak is a huge favorite to take the title as far as my logic goes.

I hope that Ellen will end up in the main draw too Blue Moon;)

Lertcheewakarn should seriously ditch juniors, unless she's seriously desperate to win a junior grand slam.

Good luck Madison, Christina, Lauren, and Beatrice! :D

Surely one of the Bogdans would be the favourite? Elena was RU last year wasnt she?

What's Pervak like on clay, i dont know what her favoured surface is?

yeah, Bogdans will be among the favourites, but there are others too, like:
Silvia Njiric (winner of Copa Gerdau), Camila Silva (won a few G1 on clay this year), Kristina Mladenovic (maybe), Ajla Tomljanovic... Zarina Diyas...could add more.

Sorry, not sure if Pervak likes clay.

Whilst I think Njiric and Silva are good, im not sure they would beat the likes of either of the Bogdans on clay. Kristina is in a great run of form so should be dangerous, although I think grass is her favoured surface (am i right?).

Babos isnt too bad on clay is she? Gavrilova will be interesting, on a bit of a hot streak atm, particularly on clay. Be her first junior slam, did well at Orange bowl/eddie herr (cant remember which) last year, think she could be dangerous.

Think, or hope?

IMO, the favourites are...
Robson, A. Bogdan, E. Bogdan, Mladenovic, Pervak

the dark horses are...
Gavrilova, McHale, Keys, Dabija, Rogowska

the pretenders are...
Babos, Lertcheewakarn, Tomljanovic, Embree, Njiric

Think as she's on the alternate list even though she's not in TOP200 of juniors and the other such applications were rejected.

Good, we have some names to follow, that makes it more interesting. Still think it is pretty open this year and more names could be added in the section of dark horses and pretenders. Bogdan or Pervak (if she has fully recovered) is my favourites.

The two SE's will (normally) be attributed to Khromacheva and Mestach. They both are in the 1/4F in the G1 Astrid Bowl in Charleroi.

That makes for 7 1994's and 1 1995 in the MD (not counting the WCMD's) if I did count it right.

Is qualie draw out ?

BelgianJuniors
May 27th, 2009, 11:20 PM
Andiyan, I understand your remark, but it is not "just for that" (meaning a 1/4 in a G1).
It is more complicated than that. From the "ITF rules and regulations":

h) Special Exempts
Players on the qualifying acceptance list who cannot appear in the qualifying of a
tournament because they are competing on the day that the qualifying competition
begins in another “qualified tournament” who apply for and receive exemption from
qualifying as hereinafter provided.

There is more to it yet, which can be found on different places of ITF regulations.

In this case, the 1/4F are on Thursday 28th June ànd the Q's start in RG that day as well. Both players are the highest ranked ones (in the Q's in RG, that are still playing in the G1 in Charleroi). If there are no other requests for SE's that have been applied for, then these two players get the SE spots.

Andiyan
May 27th, 2009, 11:31 PM
Yes. Nothing new there. I was just wondering if you can get a SE for the MD in a GA-tournament when you play a G1-tournament.

In ITFs you cannot get a SE for a 25k if you are still in a 10k final or so.

ITF Preview:

<TABLE class=contentobject cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=content colSpan=2>Roland Garros 2009 Preview</TD></TR><TR><TD class=content colSpan=2>Roland Garros will open its doors to the future stars of the game, as the Junior Championships gets under way this weekend. Top players from around the globe will look to emulate the success of past champions such as Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, Martina Hingis and Amelie Mauresmo.

The girls’ event boasts a strong field with the World’s Top 10 players gathering in Paris to compete for the title. World number one Laura Robson (GBR) will be looking to claim her second Grand Slam title. The reigning Wimbledon Champion has had her confidence knocked losing in straight sets to Sloane Stephens (USA) in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open, which would suggest that she is perhaps not yet ready to win a Grand Slam on this surface. Stephens, who dropped just one set on the way to victory at last week’s Grade A Italian open, is one of the in form players on the circuit boasting a 12-0 record this year.

Current World Champion, Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (THA), is also a strong contender, however having not made an appearance on the Junior Circuit since the Australian Open earlier this year, it will be interesting to see how this affects her performance as she attempts to claim her first Grand Slam title.

Olivia Rogowska (AUS), with a WTA Ranking of 256, is a strong outside contender for the Championship. Rogowska has already displayed some fine tennis at Roland Garros this year, taking Kateryina Bondarenko to three sets in the women’s second round. However her first round exit at the Italian Open last week shows a recent lack of consistency.

Also in the frame for the girls’ title are Australian Open Champion Ksenia Pervak (RUS)World number two Ana Bogdan (ROU) and Timea Babos (HUN). Babos, World number three, suffered a shock defeat in the second round at the Italian Open, however added three Grade 1 titles to her collection earlier this year. Pervak, boasts a 11-1 record this year and will certainly be one of the favourites going into the Championships, whilst Bogdan is yet to be beaten on clay on the Junior Circuit this year.

In the boys’ event Liang-Chi Huang (TPE) will look to recover from his first round loss and disappointing performance at the Italian Open, and rediscover the success he was enjoying at the start of the year where he claimed two titles. Huang has enjoyed mixed success since the start of the clay court season, reaching the quarter-finals in Santa Croce, and then losing his first matches in subsequent events, the Italian Open and Astrid Bowl, which questions his ability to win a Grand Slam on this surface.

Bernard Tomic (AUS) will be looking to claim his second Grand Slam title, and improve on his quarter-final appearance at last year’s Roland Garros as he goes into his first grand slam of the year. Tomic has not made an appearance on the junior circuit since making a shock exit in the first round of last year’s US Open Junior Championships, but remains as one of the favourites for the title and, with an ATP ranking of 362, his experience in the professional game may prove invaluable.

Argentina’s Andrea Collarini, a clay court specialist, is also in contention for the title, enjoying consistent success on clay this year. He is joined by fellow countryman Facundo Arguello, who claimed his first Grade A title at the Italian Open last week.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Hmm an interesting draw. At least a winnablle first round for Laura (that'll come back to haunt me  ). Jeanjean in the R2 would be interesting if they were both to win. Kristina possibly in 1/4s but shes hasnt got the easiest 8th.

One question why is Pervak not second seed? I thought her senior ranking was high enough to give her second seed or has her ranking dropped down recently as she hasnt been playing?

Yes, i thought she would be 2, i think last time i checked her ranking she was 146 so would have been 2. But she's dropped to 156 now so yes 3rd is correct.

How is Sloane the 15th seed if she was a qualifier? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. Just curious.

I believe it's because she's ranked 14th in junior ranking, but she only got that high the ranking last week. Anyway her playing qualifying is quite ridiculous, but she only played 2 tournaments this year so...

Jun 4th, 2009, 02:41 PM
First semi match is the fight of 2 93' born girls. Mladenovic is, without a doubt, going to be the favorite. Home player and with such a huge serve. However, Stephens is on a winning streak and has not lost a match in junior circuit so far, she also beat Njiric 2 & 2, who Mladenovic lost to this year on clay, guess it's going to be a tough match for both players.

The other match is between two talented Russians, gurantee 1 Russian in the final(so Russian girls are doing well in this FO). I think Pervek is going to win this match, Gavrilova, the youngest player left in the draw, will have to play really well to book herself a berth in the final imo. Her game is better on hard/grass, I reckon.

Don't want to jinx anyone so no prediction:p.

Jun 4th, 2009, 05:59 PM
Well done by Dasha and I did not expect her to win this match.

I predict Sloane will beat kiki. Not because she is a better player, but because she was so calm and in control in the Milan match I was watching. Kiki was doing well in Brazil, with easy wins, but suddenly she lost (as huge favourite) and that can happen again. However, she was fighting well today, so I could be wrong.

Kesnia is a huge fighter and since we are told that she has been injured for a long time, she will most likely play better for every match and go to the final. She will replace the photo at ITF page with the new trophy. She was so good in AO, so she will do it again.

Nice tournament and there are a huge number of girls that can beat each other...Really tough competation
in the junior girls now. Great for the sport as well

<TABLE class=contentobject border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD class=content colSpan=2>Semifinal line-up decided at Roland Garros</TD></TR><TR><TD class=content colSpan=2>Here is a novel blueprint for achieving success at a grand-slam event – get injured, don’t practise much and storm through to the semi-finals.

It may not work for too many players but that’s exactly what Russia’s Ksenia Pervak has done en route to earning a well-deserved place in the last four of the girls’ event at the French Open.

The 18-year-old left-hander, who won the Australian Open title in January, beat another Russian, Valeria Solovieva, 62 75 on Thursday and now stands just one match away from another final.

After her victory in Australia, Pervak, had hernia surgery but her recovery took time and she only began practising for Paris a few days before the start of the event.

Throw in the fact that she had never won a match in two previous visits to Roland Garros and her expectations coming in were rather low.

“I’m a little bit surprised that I am in the semis because without practice it’s a little bit tough,” she laughed.

“I’m happy with the way I am playing but it’s still a little difficult with the physical things, because I am not fit enough – I think I am about 65 percent fit. And before, I didn’t win a match in Roland Garros, so I am really surprised by this.”

Regardless of her lack of practice, Pervak is now the favourite for the title. She holds a senior ranking of 156 and has the best pedigree of the four girls remaining in the draw.

That’s not to say she will be taking her next opponent, Daria Gavrilova, lightly.

The Russian battled past Peruvian Bianca Botto 64 26 75 and is proving to be the marathon girl of the tournament, after three consecutive three-set victories.

The other semi-final is set to be a blockbuster clash between ninth seed Kristina Mladenovic of France and American No 15 seed Sloane Stephens.

Mladenovic produced another big serving performance as she saw off another American, Chanel Simmonds, 76, 62.

Stephens extended her stunning run of form as she hammered No 11 seed Silvia Nirjic of Croatia 62 62 to make it 16 wins in a row.
