Welcome to Flushing Meadows, New York, for the season's final Grand Slam. 17 of the 19 Slams played so far on OWTT have had different winners  - will we have another new Grand Slam winner here in New York? Clijsters is defening champion but has been struggling for form this season. With not long to go until the Year End Championships, this tournament will be crucial in players' campaigns for the season-ending Top 8. Let's check out the big guns here in New York....

The Favourites

#1 Daniela Hantuchova – Hantuchova won the Montreal title and also reached QF at Stanford and New Haven. She would love to add to her Wimbledon trophy from a couple of seasons back.

#3 Alicia Molik – She has had an impressive run since Wimbledon. She was a finalist in Budapest, reached the SF at Stanford and also QFs in Prague & Montreal. She was the finalist here last season and is looking to go one further this time and win her debut slam.

#4 Venus Williams – Venus has been in great form recently. She won the Stanford title, reached the final in Los Angeles as well as QFs in Budapest & New Haven. She won the Aussie earlier in the season so knows what it takes to win a Slam.

#6 Na Li – The Chinese player excels on the US hardcourts. She reached the finals in both Stanford and Montreal, as well as the semis in New Haven last week. She definitely has what it takes to win the trophy.

The Contenders

#2 Marion Bartoli - She has had a phenomenal season so far, and has just taken over the #2 ranking. She recently won the Budapest title and has the ability to go all the way here.

#5 Anna Kournikova - SF finish in Montreal, as well as a QF in Prague. She has been a Slam champion before and will be confident of repeating that feat here.

#8 Maria Kirilenko – The Wimbledon champ followed up with a win in Los Angeles as well as reaching the Prague SF. She will be difficult to beat this week in New York.

#9 Lindsay Davenport – The American has had a solid few weeks lately, reaching the semis in Los Angeles and the QF in Budapest, Stanford & Montreal. She will be hoping to be buoyed by the home fans.

The Dark Horses

#7 Jie Zheng – She reached the semis in Montreal and has firmly positioned herself in the Top 10 now. She could well trouble the top players here in New York.

#12 Victoria Azarenka – Azarenka reached the semis in Los Angeles. She has fallen off the radar a little bit apart from that. However, if she gets some inspiration and finds her game she could be lifting the trophy at the end of the week.

#14 Patty Schnyder – She is just coming off a title in New Haven last week and will be full of confidence going into this tournament.

#19 Vera Zvonareva – Zvonareva has reached QFs in Los Angeles & Montreal. She won here back in Season 1 and will be hoping to roll back the years here this week.

#23 Iroda Tulyaganova- Tulyaganova blows hot and cold. If she has a hot week she could spring some surprises. She won in Prague a few weeks ago and reached the Montreal QF.

An Uzbeki Dark Horse?

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/521/2123irona011.jpg

Iroda Tulyaganova heads into the US Open on unfamiliar turf - she is a dark horse in this years tournament. Iroda was both elated and surprised upon hearing that she was considered a dark horse by tennis insiders. "I have struggled with my form this year. As with every year it seems. This year has been my best on tour, by far. I have been winning most of my first round matches, which I am embarrassed to say is a new accomplishment for me."

Although Iroda won the tournament in Prague several weeks ago, she has struggled with her form lately - as evident in her being double bagelled by Anne Keothavong last week. "I don't know what has happened since Prague, maybe it's pressure. Regardless I hope to turn things around here at Flushing Meadow." Up first for the Uzbeki juggernaut is Lucie Safarova and then possibly Karolina Sprem in the second round. She has lost to both players the last time she faced them. "I do particularly poorly against the ball-bashers. Maybe I need to change my strategy." Although this is Iroda's fourth attempt at the US Open, she has never won more than two main draw matches at the tournament. Although much of the evidence suggests Iroda will be bounced from the tournament in the first round, she is hoping for some Uzbeki magic.

Patty Wins 4th Career Title in New Haven

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/02ESbNC8Z10R7/610x.jpg

New York, NEW YORK – Is it finally time for a breakthrough for Patty Schnyder? Coming off a stirring run that brought her, her first title of the year, fourth of her career, and a jump back into the Top 16, she is ready to make a run at a Grand Slam title. She started the tournament on a disadvantage, quickly dropping the first set to fellow lefty Emma Laine but recovered nicely to take a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. She followed that up with a strong 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 over former Top 5 player and 15th seed Gisela Dulko. In the round of 16, Patty recovered from another disaster first set to beat current World #3 Marion Bartoli 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 in what was one of her best wins of the year. “Yeah, I was happy that I was able to stick with her despite all the troubles I was having early on. Everything she hit was pinpoint in the first set and early part of the second set but I stuck to my strategy of exploiting her fitness and ultimately it worked out for me in the end.” In the quarterfinals, she outhit feisty Pole Aga Radwanska 6-4, 6-4 and outlasted nemesis and 6th seed Na Li 7-5, 6-3. “The win over [Na] was a good moral victory for me. Obviously, she is one of the best players in the world but is one of those players that I have struggled with in the past. It’s a great victory.” And in the finals, she outlasted American veteran 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 for the title. “I’ve just had a great week here in New Haven. I would like to thanks all the sponsors and organizers that make this tournament happen. Congratulations to Jill for making the finals, I’m sure she will get a title this year soon enough. I am excited to be back next year and try to defend my title.”

http://patty-schnyder.com/photos/albums/uploads/usopen2008/usopen0883.jpg

And now on to Flushing Meadows, where as the 14th seed she has a tough draw. Amelie Mauresmo or former World #1 Shahar Peer in round 2, again former World #1 Nicole Vaidisova or nemesis World #7 Jie Zheng in round 3, and then World #3 Alicia Molik in the quarters if she even gets that far. “Yeah, looking ahead this is a very tough draw. I don’t know how I’m going to pull this off! However, I have to focus on one match at a time so I will do my best in my match against Julie. I’m certainly the favorite but at this point, that doesn’t mean anything. She can come out and play great tennis or I can just play crappy tennis. I’m hoping for the best.”

An Interview with Daniela Hantuchova

http://girlsspot.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/daniela-hantuchova-tennis-beauty.jpg

With the season's final Grand Slam looming, world #1 Daniela Hantuchova kindly took some time out her busy schedule to speak to the Tour Manager about her time on the tour and her goals for the rest of the season.

Chris: How confident are you going into the final Slam of the season? It has been a while since you won a Slam.

Daniela: One of my favorite parts of the tour is the Grand Slams. I've always had good consistent results at them so I feel confident I'll do well. Winning on the other hand is always going to be tough, whether you're the world number one or not, especially on this tour, so no one really should be confident they are going to win. I really want to re-live that win at Wimbledon, so I'm ready to take on the US Open.

Chris: Who do you see as your major threats here in New York?

Daniela: Wow, good question. Everyone is a threat, but the biggest threats right now are Li, Molik, Kournikova, Venus and Bartoli. They are considered as the big five to me at the moment, just because of thier ranking. They are also big threats because I'm good friends with a few of them so it's tough to play them. With that said everyone is a big threat especially on a neutral surface like Hard.

Chris: You were near the top of the game a couple of years ago but then seemed to slump the following season. Can you think of any reason for this?

Daniela: Lack of commitment. I was younger and hard-headed. I didn't want to change my game, change tactics, work out and train constantly. It was really stupid of me not to realize that I had so much potential, and the want to win plus the ability I had could have propelled me far. But I'm happy I had that slump - it was a metaphorical kick in the rear!

Chris: What is it that has enabled you to turn your game around and reach the #1 spot?

Daniela: I've never wanted anything so bad in my life. When I reached the Top 3 and won Wimbledon I only "liked" tennis and liked doing something I was good at. I was caught in the drama of OWTT. Now I love being on court, I love out-thinking an opponent, I love the thrill of fighting off match points, I love the feeling of winniong a three hour match, I love working in the gym, I love watching tapes of my matches. I just love tennis!

Chris: What are your goals for the rest of the season?

Daniela: My goal for the rest of the season is to pass Serena Williams' most titles ever record of nine. I have 8 and I think the US Open would be a nice little addition to that title count. Id love to win the YEC. I never made it past the round-robin stages there so I'd love to do that.

Chris: You have been on the OWTT since the start. How do you perceive the tour to have changed and is there anything you miss about the olden days? Anything you would like to see incorporated in to the Tour in the future?

Daniela: This has been an AMAZING 5 seasons. I never want to leave! I dont think I want any changes. I'd like more catfights and more articles from the other ladies though.

Petrova def. Jankovic
5-7 7-6(5) 6-4

What a fantastic match between thse two! Jankovic had her chances up 7-5 5-3 but couldn't close it out. Kudos to Petrova for digging deep to send it into a decider. That third set was so tight with so many long deuce games, but it was Petrova who held her nerve at the end. She goes on to face #1 Hantuchova in the next round

Real bad luck for Nikki here as she loses out to Jie Zheng on a CT. Zheng held her nerve better in the final set tie-break, but Vaidisova looks to be playing so much better than earlier in the season. Zheng goes on to face Mauresmo in the next round

(4) V.Williams def. (10) Ivanovic
7-5* 6-7(9) 7-5

Ivanovic was riddled with nerves out there today. She was up 4-0 in the first and lost it and had a huge 5-1 lead in the decider before Venus came storming back. This loss will be tough for Ivanovic and the CT in the first was decisive. However, kudos to Venus for showing unbelievable fighting spirit in the final set. She goes onto the quarters and will face compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Congratulations to Venus Williams who claims her second Slam title, adding to her Aussie Open title from earlier in the season. SHe was in impressive form in her lat 3 matches, following a titanic battle with Ivanovic in R16. She is the second player to win 2 Slams in a season, after Clijsters won the Aussie and US Opens last season. She moves to a career high of #2 and is just over 500 points behind Hantuchova now. Great tournament for Radwanska as well who moves up from #35 to #19!

An Interview with Venus Williams

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h2CJUyDf_98/RqDP1HUT75I/AAAAAAAAHXc/VRmNGz8-VfE/s400/Venus%2520Williams-PLG-000020.jpg

With the season's final Grand Slam over, we catch up with newly crowned champion and World #2 Venus Williams.

Chris: Can you describe your feelings right now, having just clinched your second Grand Slam title?

Venus: I'm so excited. I can't even describe it. I had a huge success in Melbourne, and that's pretty special to me as well. But this title is at home in front of my family, friends and American fans, which makes it even more special for me.

Chris: You had to play your sister Serena in your first match here. Was it difficult to play against her?

Venus: No, it wasn't difficult at all. She was bitchy to me all day so I was geared up to kick her ass. And I did it. Obviously I'm the talented one in our family and she is only a poor wannabe.

Chris: What was going through your head when you were 5-1 down in the third set against Ivanovic? What enabled you to fight your way back?

Venus: I don't know. I just got so positive - the crowd was realy behind me and that definitely helped. I thought - all I have to do is win one game at a time and catch up with her and crush her. I am the fucking Venus Williams after all and I wasn't going to lose to some Serbian slut.

Chris: A lot of the top players, including #1 Hantuchova, dropped out early in New York. Can you think of any reason why this was?

Venus: They are lazy bitches - plain and simple. I worked and trained so hard for this event and that's why I have the trophy!

Chris: How are you going to celebrate your victory here in New York?

Venus: I want to get drunk and have sex with everyone. Of course I'm joking - I'll have fun with my friends in NYC - we have a VIP club booked out for tonight. I might invite some of the other players if I am feeling generous!

Chris: With just a few weeks of the season left, what are your goals for the rest of the season and for next season?

Venus: I really want to do well in YEC so this is my main goal. Next season? Hmmm... First of all I want to defend my grandslam titles. And obviously I hope I'll be No. 1 in the world.

Chris: Are there any changes or additions you would like to see on the OWTT Tour next season?

Venus: I like to see more points for Grand Slam Events and hope there will be no more ballbashers like Bartoli, Molik and Hantuchova who forgot about me in her interview before US Open. Stupid bitch... look who is holding the trophy now!

Jose.
