Wow she won on her birthday :hearts:. And saved two match points. I know it's a dream, but it would be awesome if Timea and Blanka could grow up and be a great Fed Cup team with Ági.

12 May 2009 - Edinburgh, Great Britain - Nick Fishpool

Birthday girl takes Edinburgh title

Timea Babos, Hungary’s World Number 3 in the Junior rankings, celebrated her 16th birthday with victory in the singles final of a $10,000 tournament in Edinburgh, Scotland. En route to the final, Babos rather comfortably swept aside all who opposed her on court in straight sets, including a semi final win over 7th seed, Volha Duko from Belarus. In the final she took on Britain’s Naomi Broady, the tournament’s No. 1 seeded player and looked to be on course for yet another straight sets victory when she took the opening set 64. Broady, however, fought back to level the match with a 7-3 tiebreak success in the second set. With both players now just one set away from victory another very close set was played out and was eventually won by Babos 10-8 on a tiebreak. Babos’ 64 67(3) 76(8) win in this final, which was held up on several occasions due to rain, gave her a first career singles title on the ITF Pro Circuit in what was only her second professional tournament.

The previous week, Babos had made her debut on the ITF Pro Circuit in a $10,000 tournament in Bournemouth on England’s south-coast. Babos, winner of four junior singles and nine junior doubles titles (from Sept 2006- April 2009) and who was part of the Hungarian Junior Fed Cup squad who finished 3rd in 2008, won through to the singles main draw via the qualifying event without losing a set. She maintained this form in the singles main draw and soon found herself in the semi finals. Here she faced Germany’s Lena-Marie Hofmann in a match which she just edged 76(4) 76(3) to make the final. Despite taking the opening set, Babos’ hopes of winning the title in her debut tournament were ended by another German player, Svenja Weideman, with a three set defeat in the final, 46 63 64. Glory did come her way however in the doubles event. With her British partner Stephanie Cornish, the doubles title was won when they were awarded victory in the final by walkover.

Babos taking inspiration from Oudin success

If you ask Timea Babos of Hungary where she’s taking her inspiration from during this US Open junior girls’ tournament, she’ll tell you Melanie Oudin.

The 16-year-old Babos recalls that in last year’s US Open junior competition she lost to the then second-seeded Oudin in a straight set first-round loss.
Babos has followed the 17-year-old Oudin’s incredible run in the women’s main draw this past week. Oudin, not that long ago playing as a junior, has reached the US Open quarterfinals with wins over No.4 Elena Dementieva, former U.S. Open champion Maria Sharapova, and No.13 Nadia Petrova in the last three rounds.

“I’m very happy for her and, hopefully, in one or two years I’m going to do the same as her,” Babos said of her former junior colleague. “I am preparing for that.”

Babos made a good start on her 2009 US Open junior campaign by posting a 63 64 first round victory over Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine on Monday.

“I think my groundstrokes were pretty good today,” Babos said. “My serve could be better because usually that’s my biggest advantage in my game. Altogether, it was a good match, but it could be better.”

Babos, who is coached by her father, has recently moved to England to train at the Gosling Academy.
This season, she has played three ITF $10,000 events in Britain, winning one and reaching the final of two, which has earned her a No. 738 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour ranking.

“It was a little strange because some ladies were twice older than me,” said Babos, of playing in the $10,000 level events. “I was the new little kid and they didn’t know who I am, and I didn’t know everyone. But I think to play in these type of tournaments, and the junior Grand Slams, is best.”
Babos’ immediate dream is to win her first Grand Slam junior trophy this week at the US Open.
“That would be amazing,” she said. “This year, I’ve played a lot of tournaments, won a lot of tournaments, and I’m just playing better all the time. To win a junior Grand Slam could be the biggest thing of the year.”

ITF website:

In the girls’ event, top seed Timea Babos of Hungary survived a test before beating Anna Arina Marenko of Russia 64 67(2) 61 to reach the last eight. “It was tough, she played really good,” Babos said. “I was playing really good as well, I’d give myself 75 percent which is usually enough, but today she played really well as well.”

Babos, who trains at the Gosling academy just outside London, said she was not feeling any added pressure from being the No.1 seed. “That’s the first time I’ve been top seed both in singles and doubles,” she said. “I really enjoy it. Some people think it’s pressure but I think it’s even a little advantage because everyone is thinking that they have to play well because they’re playing the top seed.”

Babos now plays Czech qualifier Kristyna Pliskova but in the semifinals, she could yet play former junior Wimbledon champion Laura Robson, who cruised into the last eight with a 63 63 win over Cristina Dinu of Romania.

“I don’t really look at the draw. I’m not thinking, oh, semifinals it could be Laura Robson, because there are so many good players here with no ranking even,” she said.

I hope there will be not too much pressure on young Hungarian players. I assume public expectations and media hype were significant factors of Ágnes's decline after the successful 2007 season...

I think young girls should learn how to handle this and maybe Timi's situation will be easier. Ági and hopefully Melinda will be there and there are good prospects on the men's side too, so maybe she won't be too much in the center like Ági was.

Yes, there are some junior tournaments where the winner win a wild card into a professional tournament (http://www.itftennis.com/juniors/news/newsarticle.asp?articleid=20892), but Timea has wild cards because of her year end junior ranking (http://www.itftennis.com/juniors/players/exempt.asp).

Two-In-A-Row For Babos In Edinburgh

Sunday, May 09, 2010

Hungary’s Timea Babos has retained the $10k AEGON Pro-Series title in Edinburgh after the third seed overcame her doubles partner, Doncaster’s Tara Moore, 6-2 6-2, in the final of the women’s singles event.

Babos, who celebrates her 17th birthday on Monday, continued with the powerful style of tennis which has seen her knock out Edinburgh’s Mhairi Brown on her route to the final.

The pair, who both train together at the Gosling International High Performance Centre in Hertfordshire, were back on the centre court at Craiglockhart after collecting their runners-up medals in the women’s doubles final on Saturday afternoon.

With Moore showing signs of a recurring stomach injury, the Hungarian, who is currently the fourth best junior in the world, continued to dominate the play with her big serves and controlling shots from the baseline.

Speaking afterwards, Babos was happy with the progress that she has made this week.

“I have come back from a long injury. I sprained my ankle two months ago in another tournament so this is my first tournament since my return from injury.

“In my first match [this week] I was really tired and nervous. I couldn’t really move well, but after that I played really well. I haven’t dropped a set all week, which I’m really happy with.

“I played good tennis today in the final, even if I did play against my doubles partner and good friend Tara. It was tough to play against her because we know each other really well. We’ve played so many times together.

“I just enjoyed playing and if I am enjoying playing that generally means that I am playing well.”

17-year-old Moore spoke positively of her week in Edinburgh as well as her friend and training partner Babos.

“I love this place. It’s been a really good week. Timea played really well. I can’t take anything away from her. She’s done well in the whole tournament. She’s played well in both singles and doubles, so I’m really happy for her.

“Off the baseline I was fine. I was hurting a bit on the serve. I felt bad because it is not the best sportsmanship to retire in the finals.”

Saw Babos in action for the first time & I must say I'm really impressed. Not only does she have a powerful ground-game and good first serve, she has variety as well. She uses slices to good effect to place the ball & it was very refreshing to see her do it even on the forehand side.

Clearly, her second serve needs to be improved & I can see why she choked away so many matches in the second set.

She has won me over as a fan today & I hope she will make it up the rankings really soon :)

with this form on hardcourts, she has a really good chance to make it far in the Olympics. Anyway, isn't Timea stlll under the age eligibility rule since she's only 17? Could very well be the reason why she's playing juniors instead of seniors. Usually the ITF after the US open are pretty weak, maybe that's where she will make her move in her bid to qualify for the AO.

Anyway, I was wondering if she's a pro or is she still playing under amateur status?

She just played 7 professional tournaments this year. Yeah, I hope too that she will earn lots of point at the end of the year, but the sooner the better:)

Timea has got to be one of the nicest players I've ever met. I caught her watching Tiago's match out on court 1 and went up to her asking for a picture. I thought she would just say "ok" or something but to my surprise, she gave me a great big smile & said sure, then proceeded to make space for me to sit beside her for the picture.

After the picture, I told her good luck for her match tomorrow and congratulations on her Wimbledon doubles title with Sloane. Once again, she was really friendly and said thank you many times. With Monica suffering a surprise defeat, Timea has a really good chance of making finals.

Matchwise, Timea was just one step up for Sophia. She won easily even thought she made many silly errors like botched smashes, drive volleys & dropshots.

I didn't go today (thank god, it would have been hard for me to choose who to cheer as I've taken quite a fancy to Yulia after meeting her as well). But I will be there tomorrow cheering Timi on against Zheng!

it's surprising to see how easily she beat Yulia today, but Yulia has had problems in her last 2 matches, calling for the training for a thigh injury it seems. Timi's toughest match so far looks to have been the one with Chantal who was giving her alot of problems with good defense and attacking at the right moments. Timi was clearly frustrated in that match because of Chantal & the umpire as well. There were a few points that were called out by the umpire instead of the line judge & Timi was very vocal in her displeasure. At one point, she even shouted, "oh my god, you are a joke. That ball was MILES out.. miles out". Fiery Timi was pretty hot as well :)

Gregorio87
Aug 17th, 2010, 01:47 PM
Oh my:tape: I find her on court temperament funny, but if you play in the Youth Olympics in front of the ex Hungarian Olympic Commitee pres -the new president of Hungary, then you should be a bit more calmer.
I like when she is shouting for herself, even instructions, it helps her to not loose focus. But the complaining thing- the less the better.
And tomorrow really cheer for Timi! She will need it, the Chinese will have more support for sure:p

PerfectForm
Aug 17th, 2010, 03:46 PM
Actually, the Chinese girls didn't have much support except for their VERY vocal coach. Timi has the entire Hungarian team behind her. During all her matches so far, her coach, Mate & Marton were all there to cheer her on, constantly shouting "bravo, Timi". I'm sure the President understands as he spoke to Timea personally & seemed to have a good time. On a side note, Timi offcourt is totally different and seems to be a very popular player amongst the organizers as well. On the way back to the locker room, one of the officials saw her & asked her if she won. She smiled & said yes and even hi-fived him :)

How should I say "come on" in Hungarian? I could use it tomorrow :)

Timi played badly today :( This is by far the worst match I've seen her play. her serve was not working, missed alot of first serves. She was also missing alot of her groundstrokes.. especially on her forehand side. It did not help that Zheng was pushing the ball to frustrate the shit out of Timi & threw in the occasional dropshot. Timea lost it after the first set. Hope she wins the bronze medal now.

She has four chances next year. She is allowed playing as a junior until 31 December 2011

Her father said, nothing is sure about her next year tournaments.

So they don't know at the moment if Timea will play or will not play at junior grand slams next year.

Timi: I beat Holland today, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. The sitation didn't look that great at 4-0 down in... the 3rd, but thanks to my fitness, I bounced back. Facing Molik tomorrow, hopefully the wind won't be that strong.

Timi: I'm happy that I won. We wanted to leave Aussie after my 2nd week's loss but I'm glad we stayed. All tourneys were strong but I've done okay, especially with being the youngest player.I don't think that the $25k events would be too strong for me,I actually would like to improve even further and do well at bigger tourneys soon.I would also like to thank everyone for cheering & thanks to my team,Levi,Dad and everyone!

For a moment I thougt, wow  how could Timi look so good on that pic, then I realised it's her sister :tape: and she is still in Australia :tape:
We need finally a good result in singles too, that QF wasn't bad last week, something like that again or better. 9 match winning streak in doubles :yeah:

Timea got her revenge against Holland, coming back from 0-4 down in the third set :) Now time to shock Molik!!

Btw, I think Timi looks better than Suzi :)

Suzi looks a bit better, but Timi is the better tennis player, nature was fair :p

A win against Molik:worship:, but Timi is really inconsistent, sometimes she shows her excellent attacks and volleys, then she hits out an easy second serve at break point and the choke begins..., and I just watched the third set. The first could have been:eek:
