As far as I know Despina is training in Athens. I'm not sure will be playing Qualies in Milan. We will see it.

Just a question: do you know where she was born? It sounds a small town, but I cannot recall which one!!!

Did you know Christina McHale - who holds a Wta ranking of 411 - is the highest ranked player of the field?
That's pretty interesting, but It's ages she last played an official match on dirt (september 2008 Jun Fed Cup in Mexico). She's a fighter, her style of play can suit very well any surfaces, but she needs some time to climatize herself to that kind of dirt!

Yeah Mia has been struggling with a thigh (I think) injury over the past few months. It's ashame she can't travel to Europe because it has totally stalled her progress.

Isabella will play (last I heard she was in London en route to Italy). She did averagely in the Australian claycourt challengers though, so I don't expect her to do particularly well until the grasscourt season.

Monika is in Korea and will play a bunch of 25k's on hardcourt over there, so she isn't playing any of the European claycourt junior tournaments.

As far as I know, Olivia will play Milan...but she got the Australian main draw wildcard for Roland Garros so she might opt for training and practice matches in Paris instead. But if she does play Milan, she will take out a few seeds. In the recent clay swing through Queensland, she won an Australian Money Tournament, destroying Isabella 6/1 6/4 in the final. She then made the final of a 25k in Bundaberg the following week, beating top seed Jessica Moore (who has a wrist injury and will miss Roland Garros qualifying) 7/5 6/4 before losing to Anastasia Rodionova, the second seed, 7/5 6/0 after leading 5/2. Last week Olivia made the semi finals of a 25k in Ipswich, beating Monika easily in the quarter finals 6/3 6/2 before losing again to Rodionova 6/2 7/6(5).

Clay is her favourite surface and suits her hard, deep groundstrokes. She is a baseliner, good movement, decent serve and a great attitude. With her recent results, she has risen to No.286 on the WTA Rankings and will go to No.257 next week.

In the main draw, maybe, but not overall. Rogowska who is entered in qualifying sits comfortably inside the top 300 and moves around 257 next week ;)

I don't know a whole lot about Laura Robson other then that she was born in Melbourne, moved at a very young age to Singapore and then to the UK. She has said that she is not Australian, but British so I have no overall interest in the Robson area :p
But she is a great young player and it's about time the Brits had someone half decent on the women's side :nerner:

She works with Chris Johnson (former coach of Wayne Ferreira, Jelena Dokic and Jarmila Groth) through the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). The AIS is based in Canberra and also has international bases in Sutton, UK and Barcelona, Spain. In the last month or so she has also been working with Nicole Pratt (former World No.35).

So that AIS is a public facility developed and managed by aussie government through its australian sports commission. Isn't it?

Thx. That is correct and she will be on the road for 2 months with this group. I heard yesterday that she has a problem with one of her legs, so hope it is not too serious and stops her. She will have a very tough opponent today in Yulia, but we will see how it goes.

I'm just wondering the same thing. Played Madrid Qualies last week end, supposedly fine. Maybe got a WC for Warsaw or Strasbourg qualies, but I actually do not know.

Well, the qualifying matches gets underway on Saturday with Olivia Rogowska playing a couple of underdogs. It was a cakewalk for her, who produced some smart tennis to crush opponents quickly. She's the opposite of a ball basher, likes to move the opponents around and hit harder when receiving easy balls.
Samira Giger also won 2 matches in the qualifying event to earn her place in the main draw.
Brooke Bolender was scratched for late arrival!!!

Two of the biggest matches of the day will feature Sloane Stephens vs Yulia Putintseva and Madison Keys vs Isabella Holland. Yulia played the best tennis of her career these days, but today can be a tough match against Sloane. Madison has a powerful groundstroke game from the baseline, but today her fitness and her movement are the key factors.

What a draw, guyz,

it is top-heavy!

Just listen to the list of players in the bottom half: Dasha Gavrilova, Madison Keys, Bella Holland, Ajla Tomljanovic, Elena Bogdan, Nastja Kolar, Olivia Rogowska, Trice Capra, Timea Babos, Anna Orlik. No disrespect to the players on the top half, but it is just not as strong.

Let's look to some potential match-ups down the road. Well the first impressive one is in the 2nd round. How does Julia Mayr vs Laura Robson sound? This might be a pretty, pretty interesting match.

If we assume Rogowska will beat Kolar, a potential 2nd round match between the Aussie and Elena Bogdan (if she'a not too tired), would be be a high quality match.

It's a hard task, but I will be certainly watching Ulrikke. It's the last match on court n.8, so we will have to wait and see. Pillot has a strong defensive ability, Eikeri ought to stay focused and play smart tennis.

Thx, I know it's not an easy match for her, specially if you say she is good in defence, Ulrikke is aggressive but likes stay on the baseline. Hope you will keep an eye on it and give a quick summary, thx in advance.

Yep. I did. Tons of UE and bad movement on the court. You know, it's ages Laura last played an official tournament. Ejdesgaard was too nervous in the 2nd set, took bad shot selection in the big points. So Laura is through to the 2nd, but today will be both tough and pretty interesting match.

Thanks, sounds like Ejdesgaard lost it rather than Laura won it. But as you say first match back after 3.5 months is never going to be great, and her movement's hardly the best part of her game, clay is only going to highlight that.

Ulrikke:

the girl has a great quality of movement. I actually think that's her best strenght at the moment. The swing is also clean, she hit with no effort at all. The next step will be to go for ball and generate power. Pillot played aggressive from the beginning, Ulrikke cope with it well in the second set but wasn't enough to overcome the Italian.

Olivia and Elena  Don't mean to be rude to the opponents or the tournament, but I don't think they cared all that much as its junoirs and they have both been senoir players and been sucessful at that stage, I don't see how they could lose otherwise.

Don't mean to be rude to you, but you know they can be beat as well right? They can have their bad days too, if they don't care that much why bother entering and lose in the 2nd round? Stop making stupid comments, really.

Well Gavrilova seems to be the better player, but I guess her game style just doesn't suit clay, she has the potential but she still has a lot to improve. Though I do agree Krunic is a good player.

No, that is my opinion. I will say what I want to

Its not that they don't care, its that they know that it is juniors not senoirs and doesn't count for much, of course they were both having bad days, otherwise they would have won. But if it were a senoirs match they probably would have tried harder and grinded it out, but seeing as though it was juniors and not a grand slam, they wouldn't have put in as much effort to win playing badly.

Stephens takes the first set 6-4. C'mon Laura! Need to make her play more on the return of serve.

Service is quite good, but unfortunately Laura's groundstrokes are very wayward at times.

Right now Sloane definitely deserves to win, she seems to be way more focussed than Laura. I wonder where Laura's mind is, though, she does not seem to be plugged into this match.

6-4, 5-0

Laura is soooo frustrated.....

Indeed, but the only one she has to blame is herself. She did not seem the least bit focussed from the very start. And the second set....well, kinda shameful. All credit goes to Stephens, though, she played a very good and focussed game.

I just presume Laura was tired, she'd had three tough matches, and not playing since January and coming into that is always going to be tough. She did look tired, both in her body language and the way she played. Still, QFs is not bad. Congrats though Sloane.
