Police Say Accused Craigslist Killer Owed Gambling Debts
Philip Markoff Allegedly Hit Connecticut Casino After Killing, Source Tells ABC News
By MICHELE MCPHEE, LISA FLETCHER, JIM AVILA, RICHARD ESPOSITO and SARAH NETTER
April 21, 2009

Philip Markoff, the accused "Craigslist killer" currently being held in Boston on murder charges, gambled all night at the Foxwoods Casino two days after he allegedly killed Julissa Brisman at an upscale Boston hotel, leaving with $5,300 in winnings, a source with knowledge of the investigation told ABC News.

He also gambled at the Connecticut casino two days after he allegedly attacked another woman at the Westin Hotel in Boston, said the source, who spoke to ABC News on the condition of anonymity. Prosecutors claim he stole $800 out of the woman's wallet before he bound her, duct-taped her mouth shut and then used plastic flexi-cuffs to tie her to a doorknob.

Markoff, a 22-year-old medical student, pleaded not guilty today to robbery, kidnapping and murder charges and was ordered held without bail.

A police source close to the investigation told ABC News this week that police believe Markoff's motive in the alleged crimes was to pay off gambling debts. Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley, speaking to reporters today after Markoff's brief court hearing, would not comment on the gambling allegations, but said authorities believe robbery was the motive for the crimes.

Markoff opened an account at the Foxwoods casino in 2008, but his visits to the casino increased "in March and April," leading the Cheryl, N.Y., native to apply for a credit line in early April, a source with knowledge of the investigation said.

"He went to Foxwoods frequently, including visits on April 2, 12, and 16,'' the source told ABC News. "On the 16th he left with $5,300 in winnings.''

Markoff also used his hometown New York address at 803 Cheryl Rd. and the Quincy, Mass., apartment he shared with his fiancée to apply for a credit line. The highest single bet Markoff made was $1,000, the source said.

"He came once in 2008, but then he was here all the time starting in March,'' the source said.

Police say the clean-cut 22-year-old robbed two women he solicited through personal ads on Craigslist.

Prosecutors said today that Markoff bound and robbed a woman at the Westin Hotel on April 10. In a separate April 14 attack, prosecutors claim Markoff tried to rob 26-year-old Brisman at the Boston Mariott Copley Place Hotel, but hit her over the head and then shot her in the heart when she resisted.

"This is a brutal, vicious, savage attack. This suspect showed he was willing to take advantage of women," said Conley, adding that there was a "strong possibility he has done this before."

During a search of Markoff's house, police found a semi-automatic weapon, plastic ties and duct tape, Conley said.

He added that there is a "strong possibility" that Markoff has attacked other women and asked other potential victims to come forward.

It's kind of weird he is shooting and robbing craigslist masseuses. There are better and more profitable people to get money from if you choose to go the crime route.

I think they were easy targets - he set them up by appointment, basically. And they all had money - hundreds, and he took a laptop, etc. from them too.

The creepy thing about the story is the "double life" aspect. He had a beach wedding planned for this summer, and was in his second year of Med School at a prestigious university,

I'm fairly sure that "masseuse" on craigslist means whore.

It's a risky business. You shouldn't meet strangers from the internet in hotels.

Sheesh, Sally, I thought you knew that. The whole concept is these are sex workers advertising on Craigslist. There have been a lot of recent news stories about states' attorneys trying to stop Craigslist from advertising these services.

Here is a strange little tidbit I found:

Markoff exhibited bizarre behavior while in a Hub jail cell after his arrest, at one point shoving wads of toilet paper down his pants. Police asked him what he was doing and he told them he was keeping the tissue clean in case he had to use it later, a source said.

I want to learn more about his nutty fiancee, Megan McAllister. Here is a little something.

ABC News, citing a source with knowledge of the investigation, reported last night that Markoff gambled all night at Foxwoods two days after Brisman’s murder, winning $5,300.

“He went to Foxwoods frequently, including visits on April 2, 12 and 16,” ABC quoted the source as saying. “On the 16th he left with $5,300 in winnings.” The source told ABC Markoff’s gambling escalated in March.

The young, upwardly mobile couple apparently enjoyed high-stakes gambling. On their wedding Web site, they list a Connecticut casino as a top honeymoon choice while McAllister’s Facebook profile lists her as a “fan” of a St. Kitts gaming parlor.

Yesterday morning, Markoff's fiancee defended him in an e-mail message she sent to ABC News, according to the website of "Good Morning America."

"Unfortunately, you were given wrong information, as was the public," McAllister wrote. "All I have to say to you is Philip is a beautiful person inside and out and could not hurt a fly! A police officer in Boston (or many) is trying to make big bucks by selling this false story to the TV stations. What else is new?? Philip is an intelligent man who is just trying to live his life so if you could leave us alone we would greatly appreciate it. We expect to marry in August and share a wonderful, meaningful life together."

Markoff, who was arrested after cops tailed him for several days, will be charged in Boston Municipal Court with the murder of Julissa Brisman. The slain 26-year-old New Yorker advertised her services on craigslist and was shot in a posh Boston hotel last Tuesday.

Sources say inside the apartment was underwear belonging to both women that Markoff is accused of finding on Craigslist, meeting in Boston hotels and allegedly attacking. One of them, 26-year-old Julissa Brisman, was shot and killed when prosecutors say she fought back.

While searching the apartment of Philip Markoff, the accused murderer known as the “Craigslist Killer,” investigators found a handgun and panties belonging to his two known victims. The panties were hidden in a hollowed-out copy of “Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body” at Markoff’s apartment.

The Boston Globe reports a gun concealed in a medical textbook was also found.

Clean-cut 'Craigslist Killer' suspect Philip Markoff gave off 'creepy vibe'
BY JOE KEMP IN SHERRILL, N.Y. AND HELEN KENNEDY IN NEW YORK
DAILY NEWS WRITERS

"Smart." "Pompous." Clean-cut." "Creepy."

A high-achieving dentist's son from upstate New York, Philip Markoff is described in various ways, but everyone, even those who didn't like him, is shocked at the charges against him.

"He was smart. He carried himself well," said neighbor Michael Bernard.

"He seemed like the type that would have it all. It doesn't make sense."

Markoff grew up the son of a Syracuse dentist, with an older brother, Jon.

He graduated in 2004 from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, where he was on the bowling and golf teams, and earned a biology degree from SUNY Albany four years later.

In high school, he was an honors student who hung out with the brains and also played a lot of poker, even mentioning his gaming skills on his yearbook page.

"He had a decent amount of friends, although I would say a great deal would have characterized him as weird," said former high school classmate Nate Heysler.

English teacher Sonja Hluska remembered him as a smart kid with a good sense of humor."He was one of my most polite students. He was kind.

"Just a nice, clean-cut boy wanting to succeed. That type that you'd like to mother," she said. "I just still can't believe it."

At college, he was a member of the College Republicans and was fairly unremarkable except for the occasional offensive comment, said ex-classmate Joe Coe.

"He was someone that had issues with people of color, had issues with women," Coe told CBS.
"He gave off a creepy vibe," said another SUNY classmate.

Markoff was a sophomore at SUNY Albany when he met his fiancée, then-senior Megan McAllister, when both volunteered in a hospital emergency room.

"We spent about two months pushing stretchers down hallways and bringing blood and urine samples to pathology together before our first date," she wrote on a Web site for the wedding they planned in Long Branch, N.J.

Accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff reportedly tried to hang himself in his jail cell with shoelaces and was placed on suicide watch Thursday.

Correction officers found "shoelace marks" around the 22-year-old med student's neck, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

He was quickly moved to a segregated unit at Boston's Nashua St. jail so officers can keep a closer watch on him.

Fiancee’s dad: ‘She’s still confident in Phil’.

LITTLE SILVER, N.J. - The stunned dad of Philip Markoff’s fiancee said this afternoon his distraught daughter is still praying the Craigslist killing nightmare will prove to be just a bad dream.

“She’s still confident in Phil. Other than that we’re saying a lot of prayers,” said Jim McAllister, father of 25-year-old Megan McAllister.

Megan was planning to marry Markoff, 23, on Aug. 14 in a wedding along the Jersey Shore.

.......

The stoic dad went on to say family and friends have been very supportive. He then turned to walk back into the family’s modest raised ranch declining to answer if the couple’s wedding is still on.

.......

McAllister’s father addressed the press outside his home on the Jersey Shore. His daughter, a medical student herself at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences at St. Kitts, has not been seen outside her house for days.

.......

Duct tape, a gun hidden inside his copy of “Gray’s Anatomy,” ammo and restraints were discovered - along with women’s panties - in Markoff’s Quincy apartment after his arrest, authorities say. Police have hinted that other “items of all kinds of ilk” were also discovered.

.......

Meanwhile, the owner of the picturesque McLoone’s Pier House were the handsome young couple are set to be wed said today he’s shocked at the allegations, but keeping quiet.

“We at Mcloone’s Pier House are as surprised and concerned as anyone about the recent allegations concerning the so called ‘Craigslist murderer,’ ” said Tim McLoone. “The couple in question do, in fact, have a wedding reception scheduled at our facility in Long Branch, N.J. in August of this year.

“However, in deference to our client, the prospective bride and her family, who also must be in great distress at this time, McLoone’s will have no further comment on the specifics of their scheduled event or our dealings with the family.”

Calling this dead victim of a violent crime a whore when noone knows about her life is stupid. It just goes back to people blaming the victim(a young female) in some way for her own death. It's the underlying tone you used asshole.
The real whore is the perpertrator and the only ass is yourself.

I tend to agree. Nobody uses the word "whore" anymore as a simple description of a prostitute. It is always used in a derogatory way, and as defining the whole person instead of describing how she gets work..

Well, I did. I think it's pretty clear I didn't say anything negative towards her. If you see the word itself as an insult, that's fine, but you really shouldn't expect other people to use and define words only as you would.
