With Vera is now gone from the Russian team and Roberta finding a great form this week, Fran is playing better now and Flavia is playing on her fav surface, should Italy now be considered a favorite for the tie? Sveta is not playing well this year for the most part, same with Anna C and Nadia.

Add to this the fact that all of Iatlian players are in Europe and some of the Russians have been playing in the US this weel (Petrova, Vesnina), so will definitely need time to get over the jet lag.

Hummm.... Hate to burst your bubble, but although Vinci has won a good tournament, she didn't actually beat anyone special, just a down-form Pennetta and a always-mediocre Kirilenko...

Furthermore, Flavia isn't playing any good these past weeks (losing in easy straights sets against Vinci prooves it)

I hate Svetlana's mental strength (which is almost inexistent) but she does have the physical to overpower her opponents on clay, and Nadia is having some good results these past weeks.

Russia will win.

Anything is possible in tennis so I wont say that italy cant win, however even if all the above is true Italy may get a few sets but not any wins. I still fully expect Russia to go 5-0 .... but maybe ill be wrong! One thing is for sure though the US has almost ZERO chance while Italy has a prayier of a chance.

You think America has 0% chance? Why? I think we could still win it. Bethanie just won the Family Circle Cup doubles title with Petrova, so she obviously can't be playing crap tennis. Melanie fought her way through qualifying then got to the 3r at Charleston. Alexa has been playing decent tennis the past month or so and then Liezel who is a part of the #1 doubles team in the world. Don't count them out.

I don't know. Russia is still pretty dominant, although to be safe I would've chosen Safina or Dementieva or even Pavlyuchenkova or Kleybanova:shrug:
Kuzzy and Chaky are:help: on a bad day:tape:
Maybe Italy will get lucky and win like 2006 (sorry, but they had some luck with no Clijsters and a ret. in doubles:shrug: )
I just wish that Fran could play like FC year-round:shrug::o

For the first time in a while, I'm worried Russia might lose a Fed Cup tie.

Someone will replace Bepa, right? They can't go with only three players. With this team, probably Petrova and Kuznetsova will play singles. And on a bad day, they can easily lose to Flavia, Vinci or Schiavone. Not a very good perspective for the Russian team.

That being said, I normally trust Tarpischev's decisions so I'll just hope for the best.

I think it will either Nastya P, Alisa or Elena V. They are training with the team according to Tarpiscev. I have a feeling it will be Vesnina - Russians now need a good doubles team and a choice of 3 players in case either Sveta or Nadia not playing well or having long singles matches.

Sveta's slumps never reflect on her FED CUP results (11-3 W/L, unbeaten after 2004) and red clay is her probably best surface.

But in other three matches (out of Sveta singles) Italians at home court has great chances... especially if Petrova, former red clay giant, not improve her game. BTW Nadia 4-3 W/L in singles is not so great - but she lose once against Henin and twice vs Venus, and Petrova W/L in doubles is 6-0 perfect including famous crucial win (with Vesnina) against Venus/Raymond team two years ago in USA.

Talking about Italians I not agree that Vinci should play instead Pennetta or Schiavone after winning Barcelona. I'm sure that just week after careers biggest success she is physically and especially mentally too tired to give her best again already this week, and Flavia and Fran is proven FED CUP "specialists".

Without Sharapova, Dementieva, Safina and Zvonareva, Russians chances to beat supermotivated in-shape Italia on theirs soil is about 55%-60%.

even if Vinci doesn't play - it good to have an inform player as an option in 2 day format competition.

Russia names Fed Cup team to play Italy

MOSCOW: Former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova will lead the Russian team against Italy in the Fed Cup semifinals next weekend. Russia captain Shamil Tarpischev on Wednesday also selected 10th-ranked Nadia Petrova, No. 23 Anna Chakvetadze, Alisa Kleybanova and rookie Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to face the 2006 champion on clay at Castellaneta Marina, Italy. Sixth-ranked Vera Zvonareva is recovering from an injury. Russia routed China 5-0 and Italy beat France by the same score in the first round. Russia has won the Fed Cup four times and is looking for its third straight title. Russia has a 4-0 record against Italy, including a 4-0 win in the 2007 final. ap

That was a good prediction, you were right that Italy would do something, but the thread is still wrong because Italy wasn't favorites, the two wins today were shockers.

to me Italy was the favorite, had the strongest team especially on clay, I'm not surprises by any of those results, kuzzie has done nothing this year and well we all know Chakky these days  and Pennetta is great so no surprise

Schiavone's win is a shocker, Pennetta's one was expected and obvious

IMO Russia should win every year:shrug:
They need Pavlyuchenkova to play if they have any chance of winning:shrug:
What I like about Italy is how they are so dedicated to representing their country;)
Schiavone is so much better in Fed Cup. I wish she always played that well:(
