I've watched some clips on you tube and would love to see more, especially backhand. so it'd be great to know whose backhand is your favorite to watch tactically and beautifully. (I guess most of you guys would defenitly say Justine's that's my favorite too but if there's another player that'd be great)

Thank you in avance for replying!

Some of the angles that Serena gets on her cross-court backhand are a joy to watch.

Aravane Rezai has a massive backhand when it's on.

Yeah, but TOB's actually hitting a two-handed forehand.

You could watch Dementieva's backhand, then do everything exactly the opposite of what she does.

Most top 25 WTA players have solid backhands. Even the "frowned" upon backhands of Ivanovic and Dementieva aren't that bad and have their good moments. It's not like they go to great lengths to run around their backhands the way Federer/Roddick/Ferrer do.

Of course we all know who has the best forehand. :D

yeah, Tennis Magazine even did a feature on what you could learn from Lena's backhand last year, so I was just being  about yesterday. It does break down when players are able to put it under a lot of pressure, but as with most every single one of Dementieva's problems, the issues are more mental than mechanical.

Venus, Serena, JJ, Azarenka. Hell i even like Kuzy's backhand when she gets down for it. It's actually a well-produced shot.

Out of them all though, i prefer Venus's and Jelena's most. They just have the ability to switch-up the angles at will.

is it me or does venus's backhand look ugly to watch. i love her game and i know her backhand IS effective but i find it hard to appreciate it. her open stance her her movement look awkward and unnatural.

LOL this is the second time today on two different forums I'm read this about Venus. First her groundstrokes, now it's her backhand. Not attacking you just find it kinda funny

Hey M... is that you?

Venus' backhand is an anomaly. I really don't know HOW she hits that backhand in such an open stance with her arms so close her body. She has a chicken wing backhand even though she has long arms. It's as if she relies on thrusting the ball with mostly upper body strength. At least Serena uses a closed stance at times. But Venus ALWAYS plays her backhand this way. It works for her, but like Agassi's, I wouldn't want to replicate hers.

Caroline Wozniacki's backhand is her biggest strength - she needs to get the forehand working to a similar consistency IMO. Suarez-Navarro has the classic one hander, and Mauresmo at her best is beautiful, but in terms of a real strength, Sharapova gets such power and consistency.
Still miss Justine of course - the most beautiful, and Steffi's slice was a wonder!

Maria's crosscourt is lethal. Serena and Venus also have great backhands obviously. As someone said, Hingis' was also amazing, by far her most powerful shot, and pinpoint accuracy.
Jankovic has the best DTL backhand.

I happened to really like Hingis backhand (watching Hingis vs, Venus in US Open 99), her motion and the direction looks really flow...and Vee's is awesome too but i think it can be a little bit risky, if you happen to have a bad mood.

tonight i'll spend time watching the vids of the match of players that you have said ::D
Vee vs. JJ
or Maria vs. Venus
i'd love to see Justine vs. Maria on clay too hope i can find one
thx again so much

totally was about to mention li. not many actually use the backhand as a weapon to be fair. i don't think it's necessarily a question of power. i think on the backhand its preparation and you pretty much don't better preparation than venus, serena or nicole. think dokic, ana too...people probably think maria's backhand is better than it is because her forehand is so ugly, ugly but effective, wonder why she has shoulder problems...technique it would seem does matter.

Generally, when we have these arguments, we end up concluding that Henin's is the prettiest but is not effective on fast surfaces because the stroke is too long/she can be overpowered, Sharapova's is not very pretty but very consistent/powerful/best on tour crosscourt, and that Jankovic has the best DTL.

i did and i have an amazing backhand. Your hands are close to your body but I actually did gymnastics/diving for many years and my wrists are kinda weak. So I dont like to extend my arms b/c it adds additional pressure to my wrists. If your arms are close to your sides you have additonal leverage which allows you to use you wrist to create more pace and additonal angles.

Venus' chicken wing backhand it what gives her all those angles shots. Just like Monica Seles. Any orthodox tennis teacher would tell they're wrong. Are they beautiful or graceful?? No. Are they effective?? Oh, Hell! YES!!
