When was the last time a player won their first ever title on WTA at a Tier 1?

I can't remember the last player to achieve this? Was there any players who won a grand slam as their first title?

Daniela Hantuchova won Indian Wells for her first title. Indian Wells wins were her first two titles actually

Those were all Tier II at the time.

Serena won Paris Indoors, Nadia won Linz, and Dementieva was at AI.

The current Charleston tournament would be classed Tier II.

i dont really understand the question as charleston is the equivalent of a tier two, not a tier one.

I consider it as Tier I because there are two tiers now, Premier and International. Otherwise it would technically be a Tier III because it would be Premier Mandatory: Tier I, Premier 5: Tier II, Premier: Tier III, International: Tier IV.

Premier Mandatory and Premier 5 = Tier I
Premier (e.g. CHarleston) = Tier II
International = MM

Haha thats what i thought too but the question i asked confused some ppl :lol:

nevertheless, it's a great achievement for Sabine. I just checked that Graf first title was also at Charleston back in 86.

Sabine won a premier event :o

And don't say "it's the same" because it really is equivalent to what used to be a Tier II now.

Oh you fixed it. Well it's a useless thread now, because a Premier event is the former Tier I and Tier II, so change that too.

But I didn't think it has the same amount of points attached to it this year (hence why Serena wouldn't have stayed no.1) so it's not one of the top tier events then...

I believe the old tier I status was first introduced in 1988, and since then we only have Dokic (Rome 2001) and Hantuchova (Indian Wells 2002)
