Share the tennis match that got you really into the game.... Being from England i am sure i watched loads of tennis at Wimbledon time every year since i was born, but for me the first match that i really remember and the match that got me into the game was
1992 Olympic Final - Capriati d. Graf... i started watching it with my sister, because there was nothing else on TV.... by the end i was hooked on tennis and both Capriati and Graf became my favourite players.... so with Graf as my favourite i got to enjoy some great moments... but to see Capriati fall away was so sad, so when she came back at won those Slams it was amazing for me.
What are everyone else's?

O oh! You can see how old I am ...

Navratilovas Wimbledon-title 1990!
Because everybody in family said that this old lady won't win another Slam. Remember Steffi won in 1989 and 1988. So I went with her and she beat Garrison in the final!

But I can't remember the first matches I watched on TV. I was too little! ;-)

In 1992 I watched Enqvist and Goellner in Halle (a challenger at that time). And that was the time when I really started to get into tennis.

The first tennismatch i ever saw was venus-henin 2001, and i really was thinking: wow that little girl with the awesome and beautiful game is taking on such a huge woman. To me it was like david vs. goliath.

The match that got me into following tennis 100% was: and yes, don't cringe: henin-williams french open SF 2003. ;) I was jumping up and down when justine won the final after that. That started the era of tennis for me. Justine got me into tennis, and that makes last year of tennis such an incredible letdown for me. I'm really wondering if i'll ever see a woman play like that again...

I'm praying.

Agassi def. Martin 6-4 2-6 7-6(3) 2-6 10-8 Wimbledon 2000.

I just remember being hooked on the sport and then wanting Lindsay to win the women's title, first match of hers I saw was her win over Seles in the QFs, and since then I've been a WTAtard.

My first few memories of Tennis is seeing Martinas farewell from wimbledon, that must hve been the 1994 final when she took a bit of the grass with her.

When i was 7 i started playing two handed and grunted like Monica Seles so that must also be a memory. The first tennis match i can remember watching properly was the 1996 womens wimbledon doubles with Hingis and Sukova winning. The first full matc i rememberwatching was Graf vs Hingis 1999 French open. Quite the start to tennis LOL!

2007 Wimbledon Semi final Bartoli def Henin. Was randomly switching channels to find any interesting to watch and eventually came over Eurosport. Thought Marion was interesting to watch so I tuned in to see the final on Saturday. Didn't watch anything of tennis until June next year when I remembered that Wimbledon should start again soon. Ao I started researching other players and the game in general to be prepared for the tournament. Since then I've been following the game weekly.

For me, it wasn't one particular match, it was Wimbledon 2007. I had finished my GCSEs and had the whole summer off and for the first time, I was able to watch the tournament in its entirety. I always had a brief interest before that though but Wimby got me hooked.

The first match I saw was Venus v. Sprem Wimbledon 2r 2004.. I loved Venus the moment she hit the court, and even as a 13 year old I got so into the match. Including the messed up call in the tie break. I was in disbelief and shock. I couldn't imagine how they would just let that go, esp Venus for not noticing! Ugh it still bothers me.

But anyway ever since that for about 2 years I just watched Wimbledon in the summer. I just loved waking up and turning the tv on and watching a days worth of tennis. :) I didn't know much about the internet at that point and the fact that the tour website existed. But I have been following tennis religiously now for about 2 1/2 years. I go on the wta tour website everyday, following tournaments and what not, and ever since i stumbled upon this forum about 7 months ago, I have been hooked on it! I just love everything about the game.

some match steffi played at wimbledon 1992

although the first match i remember the most is steffi thrashing monica in the final

so i was hooked on wimbledon for a few years until 1995/96 when i became a devoted fan to the whole tour. around that time the names like graf, seles, sanchez vicario, martinez, majoli, huber, maleeva, davenport, mj fernandez, pierce, date, schultz mccarthy, habsudova and paulus were all top 10

i remember watching tennis in the 90's and have a vivid memory of hingis winning wimbledon in '97, i was a fan then but not passionately. i remember the match that really hooked me was serena vs seles toronto 2001, just amazing, i had liked seles in the 90's but this sealed it for me and seles became my favourite. that seems a long time ago now and the hingis wimbledon win is 12 years ago, now thats scary.

For me, it was watching the 1996(??) Hopman cup final between Switzerland and Croatia. I was watching TV at night, flicking channels and came across Hingis vs Majoli. I fell in love with Hingis, her game, her style, her smile, her charisma straight away. Watched the mens and then the mixed match and fell in love with Hingis even more in the mixed. The way she was able to return Ivanisevic's serve with such ease really got my attention.

Since then, i was the biggest Hingis fan, and tennis fan in general.

This was my first ever tennis match and I was so sad after Sanchez lost..

I was six years old that time and knew nothing about the rules whatsoever. I always smiled whenever I heard the word "deuce" because I though it sounded like "juice."

What I could remember was that I was also rooting for Sanchez-Vicario because I liked how her name sounded. I kept badgering my father whether she was already married because of her last name. I was also fascinated at Arantxa's cool ball clip at her back. Of course, I can't ignore her constant upskirts!

I'd seen tennis before, and thought it was a cool sport, but Ashe winning the US Open was deal-sealer. I just started devouring every book and newspaper article I could find, and the (relatively few) televised matches.

Wow, that's fantastic! You beat me.

The first match I ever saw on TV was Evonne Goolagong beating Margaret Court in the 1971 Wimbledon Final. But I really don't remember much of it as I was a kid. I was more excited when she came to my home town of Narrandera (pop. 5000) for a Street parade.

But the first player who really got me excited, and I don't recall the match or the opponent, was Francoise Durr in around 1977. I remember seeing this cute but crazy looking woman with these weird strokes (frypan serve and volleys, soup ladle backhand with her bum almost on the ground, and a temper and wonderful personality to boot). I was in heaven and tennis was my sport from then on! I even developed her backhand after years of practise!

Venus vs. Serena Wimbledon 2000.

That whole event there was so much attention around the sister, they were in the papers all the time and you just couldn't escape them. You had Serena destroying the field on the way to the semi and Venus beating Hingis in the quarters (which I never expected because I knew Hingis was the World #1 and I didn't think the #1 would lose before the final  )

So when it came to the semi I actually took a day off school so I could watch the match. It was from that point on where I became a real fan of tennis and followed it all through the year. I think the fact that Venus won the final sealed it for me because it would have been a huge downer if Venus had lost that. But from Wimbledon onwards I followed the WTA on Eurosport and watched the whole two weeks of the USO on Sky Sports.

But I had seen matches before that. I remember Graf's wins at Wimbledon again ASV and Novotna. I remember seeing Seles beat Graf at the French and then watching on the TV screen at House of Frasier in Lakeside some of the Wimbledon final between Seles/Graf (only saw about five mins). I remember watching the FO 99 final and going crazy when Graf won and then I remember the USO 99 final and just could believe that Serena actually won before her older sister. I was a fan of Serena then (and Venus when I saw her reaction to Serena winning :tape: ) but I never really followed them. I saw the end parts of their match at the GS Cup but it was Wimbledon 2000 where it all started for me.

Hmm, I don't really know. I was like 8-9 when I started watching tennis (around '01). I would watch it pretty much whenever it was on. I was too young to actually follow it closely, but whenever it was on, I would get all excited  I was pretty much a "fan" of all the good players of that time (Serena, Venus, Amelie, Justine, Kim, Jennifer, Lindsay, Nastya M., etc.), but I didn't really know enough about them to actually LIKE them. I just liked them cuz they were good.

I remember hearing about the 2004 Wimbledon final on the news, and how much of a shock it was that Maria won and how much of a big deal it was. I remember being all like, "OMG Serena, how could you?! This girl is a nobody!" :rolls: (You have no idea how much I regret saying that now :p). Again, I just rooted for Serena cuz it was in my instinct to root for winners. That was a pretty fascinating tennis time for me.

But it was only a year later, at Wimbledon again, where I really got into tennis. The Maria-Venus semi and the women's final was some of the best tennis I'd seen (or that I'd remembered seeing up until then) and I was hooked, and that semi (even though Maria lost) made me an automatic fan of hers.

FOR ME it was a combo of me starting to play and then the first match I saw was IW 2002. I saw Ju's first round match and Hingis'on TV the I saw Daniela beat her and Dani beat Hingis so then I fell in love with Danka

I use to catch a few matches here and there. But two things made me LOVE this sport. Watching Kim win the USO in 05 was wow. Plus not to mention that Two million dollar check she got. I had no idea tennis players made so much money:eek:.

The match the REALLY cemented my love for the game was Amelie V JuJu Wimby 2006. I fell in love with both of them and even more in love with tennis:inlove:

I had watched some tennis before, but the first time I vividly remember actually caring who won a match was Venus defeating Clijsters 4-6 6-3 6-1 in that lovely dress. I had checked to see that Venus lost the first set and was injured, and being on vacation, I went to go do something else. I then came back to see Venus crushing Kim late in the third set, and couldn't believe that a visibly injured player could come back and crush the healthy one.

Then the final against Serena was the first match I actually sat down and watched the whole way through. I was cheering hard for my Venus but with the abdomen injury it just wasn't meant to be. :awww:

A loyal fan since though! :hearts:

Wimbledon 1980. Borg vs. McEnroe. The Battle of 18-16. Until last year's Nadal-Federer masterpiece, it didn't get any better than that.

Admit it Darrin. It was watching that godawful Raiders Vikings Superbowl. By halftime, you were, like me, saying "Geez, anything has to better than this."

And your team was winning.

Nope. Loved every minute of that game, especially when Jack Tatum and George Atkinson went upside Sammy White's head with their forearms.

I remember watching an old NFL Films interview with Ahmad Rashad (that's right, kids, the "NBA Inside Stuff" host is a former FOOTBALL player). He said that he and all his Viking teammates showed up for that game wearing suits and ties, and when they saw the Raiders coming out of their team bus with their leather jackets and facial hair, they were intimidated. "They looked like they just got out of prison," Rashad said. ;)

Impossible. Every Superbowl involving the Vikings has the entertainment value of The Final That Must Not Be Named.

Yes. Lena D. The Vikings. The Cubs. FC Dallas. I'm 0 for a lifetime.

It wasn't a big match, but Alicia Molik vs. Tatiana Panova R3 AO05. I don't know why, but I just decided to keep watching the tennis for once. I had always flicked past it, but this time, I kept watching, and I noticed that one of the girls was Australian. She won the match and I was like oh cool, then the next time she played I watched, which was vs Venus, and I knew who venus was, so I thought it was pretty cool that Alicia had beaten her, and when she played Lindsay I was like screaming for her and everything, then I went and searched her on the internet straight away and joined this forum, and the rest is history :)

Before January 2007, never paid attention to either tennis matches or tennis stars.
Fell in love with the game immediately after watching Kim Clijsters played Patty Schnyder in the 07 Hong kong Exhibition SF.
Have been a Kim fan since then.

1981 U.S. Open final. I rooted for Tracy Austin to win the match but when Martina cried at the awards ceremony I found her story more intriguing and really became a huge fan after that.

It wasn't any match in particular, more a tennis game that got me into tennis. I think you can guess who was in the game (and for those who can't guess, Daniela ;)) I think it was around the Hopman Cup time and I recongised Daniela's name and decided to tune in.

My mum tells me that I loved watching Boris Becker even when I was about 2 years old :p I guess Becker got me into tennis, and not one particular match.....though i guess the 3 Edberg v Becker Wimbledon finals played a role in keeping my interest.

So the first match I watched was Davenport vs. Venus, but I had no idea what the HEEEELLLL was going on. By Wimbledon the next year, I had had a few tennis lessons, and could follow the score intelligently. The first match I watched for fun was Capriati vs. Henin, and I was SO mad because I was like "why would someone name their daughter after a hen? That's so stupid! AND SHE'S WINNING!" And so all I could think about while watching poor Justine were hens flapping their wings and squawking.

The first match I remember being really excited about was Seles vs. Venus OZ 2002. Since then I've been obsessed, as evidenced by my upteen thousand posts on wtaworld.

1995 Wimbledon final - Graf vs Sanchez Vicario

It was the first time I'd ever seen a tennis match (I didn't even know half the rules!). I came in just before that epic game at 5-5 in the final set and was hooked from then on!

I don't actually remember. I have a memory of watching the US Open when I just started university, but I only remember because I was so tired and it was the very first 2 weeks of uni and I've been made fun of it ever since. That was in 2002. I also remember waiting for Serena and Venus to come on TV and caught a match with Daniela, and I stayed because I liked her legs and game style. I vaguely remember grass, so I guess it was Wimbledon 2002
In the 90s I know my parents watched a lot of Graf, Seles, Becker, Chan, Sampras, Agassi etc, and I know I watched some of it too, but none of the matches really made a big impressive on me. I was more of a soccer girl back then

Graf VS Hingis RG final
It was so memorable in many ways....
Hingis serving underhand on one point after Graf started her comeback into the match and I was like WTH!? Is she allowed to do that surely that's not how you play? But she won the point! I didnt know underhand serving was legal back then
