Loses a lot of points here giving Venus Williams a larger margin on rank five.
Injured going into the clay season where she doesn't have that much to defend from here until after USO. She has a real chance to go somewhere... sigh.

Elena, don't screw this up. This is a golden path to another title and some well-needed points. A loss against the rest of the field really is inexcuseble.... WIN THIS! :fiery:

From the wrappings, it looks like either an ankle or Achilles tear. Hope it's just an ankle sprain, but the way she grabbed her ankle and painful look on her face, wonder if it's an Achilles which is excruciatingly painful.

I'm afraid that looks very serious. :sobbing:

Frankly, that rather looks like it could be the end of Vera's clay court season. Roland Garros is now a huge question mark for her and even Wimbledon isn't a certainty. This is a terrible shame for the tour. Vera has probably been the 2nd or 3rd best player on the tour this year this year and her absence will be felt. Infact, counting the period following the US Open to now, no one has earned more ranking points than Vera Zvonereva. No one. Had she simply maintained this form it was not unrealistic that she could have finished this year's US Open ranked world number 1. She was definately a strong contender to win this year's Roland Garros title too.

Obvious, if the injury is as bad as it looks this is a tragic result for Vera. It couldn't have come at worse time. The girl was in the form of her life and only improving. She was riding a wave of confidence and playing better than she had ever indicated possible. Truthfully, with an extended period out and a tough injury to recover from, we might never again see Vera play as well as she has the last seven months. It certainly won't be easy to recapture the level she has shown the last few months. I obviously hope this worst case senario is not the case. I truly hope this is not as bad an injury as it appears. But this really does look bleak. If this really is as severe as injury is I fear this is dreadfully unfortunate for both Vera and the tour as a whole. Just terrible. :awww:

She had so little to defend from post Charleston until Flushing Meadows. If she could have even maintained half of her current form she could have at least been looking at number 2 should Safina do poorly in her defense of points.

If you look at her points over the last 7 months and compare that to even Serena, you will see even number one by the end of the US Open was very realistic.

The way she can move the ball so beautifully, defend, mix in the off moonball/slice, and attack would have been perfect on clay. At least a Roland Garros semi. :sobbing:

Anyone who has had a bad injury on a tennis court knows Vera might be out for a while. It's a damn shame, considering how thoroughly she's rebuilt herself the last 18 months.

Poor Vera. She looks in so much pain.:hug:

As soon as I learned that she had retired at 1-1, I had a feeling something like this might have happened. Retiring so early in a match because of an existing injury just didn't seem very likely. But judging from these photos it looks even worse than I thought. There's never a "good" time to get injured, but considering how well she had been playing this unfortunate incident seems particularly unfair.

Unfortunaly, in the third round match of Charleston tournament against Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano Vera retired the match from score 1:1 after injuring her right ankle.

OMG. I've loved Vera since 2002 and her first MD in Miami, and she's become my favourite player on the tour since then. She isn't a ballbasher and has great skills. She is a true talent. With very few points to defend until this fall, she could have reached #1 and had a real chance at winning in Paris. This is a shame, I hope it isn't as serious as it looks :bigcry:.

I am sure from the picture of that ankle that she's got torn ligaments.
I've had the same happened on both of mine. Without the operation you're always weak & always twist them - never the same.
She being a professional athlete will probably have surgery. My gut feeling.
Really sad to see that this has happened to her.
Especially now, where we all agree she was probably in the peak of her form this year.
Real shame.

Possible. Though my friend fell down stairs and hurt her ankle (looked pretty similar to veras ankle), and it was just a sprain. She had to let it heal for a few weeks and then she was fine.
