View Full Version : Charleston R3: Sabine def. Venus 6-4, 7-6(5)!!

Sabine  :woohoo: What a great win! 72% of 1st serves won! :worship:

Venus  Served for the second set at 5-4 and was 3o love up, but Sabine won the next 7 points of 8 points, with the one she didnt win being her own DF. Tie break was decided on first serves.

The place in the semi's from that half is wide open now. Petrova, Bartoli, Lisicki and Vesnina having most chances i guess.

EDIT: Stupid me, i typed in the wrong score. Apologies. 6-4, 7-6 (5).

IF it had to happen Im glad it happened here rather than at the French. These are the kind of matches which shows just why she hasnt won RG yet. She has to scrap out these clay matches even when she isnt at her best.

Not a great first week on clay for Venus and Serena.

Ajde German pocket-Ana! :hearts: So pleased for her, she really had her day and was in the zone for most of the match. Cute reaction at the end too and I think she shed a tear of joy under a towel too. :awww:

Green clay is now probably the easiest surface to beat Venus on. Whenever I've seen her play either here on in Amelia Island (which I admit wasn't too many times... maybe 3 or 4), she just looked awkward as if she had no idea how to move on it. Slow all the time resulting in poor timing .

lisicki played really well. venus was up a break in both sets, she just could not handle the fight from sabine. venus needs to fix her transition game. she looked shaky with her movement. no confidence in moving. she would hit an aggressive shot, lisicki would hit it back and venus backed up. i was even expecting this loss. i guess it is a good loss because lisicki is a very good player and she was too tough for vee. and venus did not play horribly (she did not hit error after error), she did not play the key points well.

Wow, Sabine played amazingly well. This is the best performance I have seen from a young player on the WTA and I'm including Azarenka, Wozniacki, Pavly... and Radwanska. I hope she can keep this level of play going because she is definitely an exciting prospect.

Venus  Didn't play well, the double fault at 30-15 5-4 in the 2nd set was costly. Her movement is also compromised on clay. She is too fearful to run all out and chase down a ball. Lisicki was hitting hard balls into the space but Venus looked slower than usual to chase the balls.

well done sabine, great serving, also some clever angles and drop shots thrown in to add to the big hitting.

venus you just aint very good on clay anymore, movement was poor, not even attempting to run for some shots, off balance too much and just cant get enough free cheap points on serve.

I knew Lisicki would be dangerous and she played really well. That second serve was amazing and she went for her shots and took chances. Venus tapped those second serves over and stood still as Lisicki punished them. My day is ruined.

Oh well, I don't have to waste my time watching this match when I get home. Venus missed a golden opportunity to improve her ranking.

Oh yes, by the way, the TB was STUNNING.
Sabine's serve make venus sooooooo mad...especially the 2 service point at 4*-3

Sabine is confident enough to waste 2MP on venus's serve,
and the last mp, big serve, and venus hit it OUT.

anyway, Sabine, it's a good win, but I don't think you should waste that 2 points :o
otherwise it would be an ugly choking.

First off, Sabine played an exceptional match. Her combinations on serve onto her groundstrokes were brilliant today, i've never seen someone get Venus that off-balance, so often for such a lengthy period of time. There was just no letting up. That serve has the potential to be a real weapon in the years to come. Incredible extension and wrist-snap. All in all, just too good.

Venus was strangely apathetic today, but a lot of that was to do with the depth of Lisicki's forehand in particular. She was in such a confused state as where to move, because Sabine has great disguise on her shots also. Some of those drop-shots were audacious to the max:lol:

I don't think Venus played a bad match per se, but perhaps too passive off the ground at times. Her footwork was similarly clumsy, not really in a good positon with her feet the whole match. Still, at least it took a mighty performance to finish her off.

This proves to me that the Williams Sisters are getting too old to be on court with all these young players.

A few years ago, a player like Sabine would've just laid down for Venus or Serena. Now they actually know they have a good shot at winning against the Overrated Sisters.

well, obviously I'm disappointed Venus won't get back the #3 ranking this week  and she certainly gave Lisicki lots of help today, but this isn't the worst loss  Lisicki is a very talented, promising player, and really, she should be top 15. Her main problem is consistency. I knew she would give Venus trouble, and it's more surprising to me that she lost to Wozniak last week :o :tape:

I'd like to see Sabine go all the way here, but more likely than not she'll probably lose to Vesnina in the next round :spit: I've been a fan of this girl since I first saw her play at the AO last year. Hopefully she can build off of this result and stop having random losses.

As for Venus, I hope this loss will give her more time to gear up for the red clay swing in Europe. Charleston is a nice event and all, but I'd rather see Venus do well on the red clay, since that's the surface on which RG is played :)

Liscki played like a top 10 player in form, it was remarkable stuff. She played very well. If she played this well so often she wouldn't be ranked where she is. As ever some youngsters brings it for Venus.

I watched the first set and Sabine didn't do any thing special or exceptional. Venus just could not hit the ball into the court. If Venus had won Charleston she would have risen to #3 in the rankings. Seems like whenever she has a chance to improve her ranking she just pisses it away. Good grief. It's gonna be a painful clay court season for us Williams Sister fans.

I didn't think Venus was that bad in set two, but she could have served better at 4*-5 30-0... The sun in her eyes didn't help much. Liscki really played very well, she really took it.

It wasn´t the best match of Venus for sure today, weak serve, and bad movement, but it wasn´t her worst defeat for sure!
Lisicki already has beaten some good players, and on a good day she definetly has top 20 niveau, and today she had a good day, and Venus was just not good enough to beat her today..

She had good chances, 4-2 in first set, and 5-3 in second set, but in this situations she served just too bad!
Venus won´t be the last top 10 player for sure, who lost a match against Sabine

Yes, I watched the whole damn match at lunch, and it was a waste of my time!!!!! Let me put it this way, IN MY OPINION, Venus does not fight hard enough, and just seems like she concedes way to easily, and is quick to chalk it up to a bad day, and moves on!! Maybe Lisicki played well above her ranking, but Venus should have taken this!

She has been so overlooked on here being one of the younger players :o

She hasn't had anything in the way of consistent results so far. I hope that will change though.

How is Sabine number 63?
I swear that was some of the best tennis i've seen this year.

It was, wasn't it? Sick winners from anywhere on the court. Charleston can be a bit deceiving re: pace when seen on TV because the low camera angle makes every shot look like a rocket, but hitting winners past Venus from the baseline is never easy - yet Lisicki did it with some ease. Beautiful, textbook service motion and great serving, even though her 2nd serve is unreliable (it's either an ace, a puffball or a DF) and she virtually giftwrapped Venus a couple of breaks.

I hadn't seen Lisicki play in over a year; at the time (Miami vs Chak) I thought that she certainly had weapons, but that her game as a whole was extremely raw and that her FH was shaky. Today she still shanked a FH here and there, but overall she did a much better job of keeping herself in rallies and playing controlled aggression. Not that there were many long rallies, with Lisicki constantly going for broke and Venus' erratic play. Cute sliced BH dropshots here and there. Lisicki's ROS is almost frighteningly high risk, and that's probably a factor in her inconsistent results, as is the depth of some of her shots (I suppose she often overhits when she's off). But it's the racquethead speed she can get on her groundstrokes and the out-of-nowhere big winners that stay with you - FH DTL, BH sharply angled CC, wrongfooters, everything. Just a delight to watch.

I wouldn't say so actually.

Venus wasn't really that bad. It's not like she hit a lot of ues here and there.

I would say it was one of her typical 'one of the early stages matches' when she is not 100%.

She lost her serve at 5*4. This is her probable fault.

But from this point it was Sabine who gave her no room hitting huge serve and huge winners.

The German was on a huge courage.

Actually after the match is was obvious she was surprised she played at that level.

So congrats to her.

As for the rankings. I would say that she doesn't always play another hard hitters like Venus, there are also players of different types on tour. For example, she lost to players like Schnyder, Bammer and etc. The players who are patient in rallies can make Sabine a true headache.

But the girl still has a great potencial. She destroyed Safina , Davenport last year.

Venus keeps having unexpected losses here and there. Venus is a big mystery to me me. We never know what to expect. That is why she's so different from her sister. Serena almost never has bad losses unless she's injured. Still, I hope Venus will be seed 4 by Roland Garros. I'm sure she'll be on fire for Wimbledon.

Please, Venus, fight for your wins on the red clay, cuz I'm thinking there might not be too many of em!

I'll admit she could have shown more desire and determination in this match, but overall i'd say she's a pretty good fighter most of the time. She just doesn't like to show much emotion on the court and I think she was puzzled on how to play Lisicki on clay.

She definitely fought her way through Acapulco on clay, so don't fear i'm sure Venus will come out all guns firing in Rome. ;)

I am not going to get to excited about Sabine yet, after the Hopman Cup and some of her better results last year, I was just waiting for her to break through. It hasn't happened yet.

Her game is so ridiculously hit and miss that is is kind of sad. It looks like she is attempting to hit aces on her second serve, smash winners on every return and barely changes anything up except the occasional drop shot. Her career will be plagued by injuries, her wrist is probably snapped in half already considering how much she abuses it with her service and forehand motion.

I expect her to have a heap of good results throughout her career, but IMO she will never-ever-ever be consistent enough to make huge waves on the tour.

Good win today though :).

#63 in the world defeats Venus. Clearly Venus is on her way out and should really retire, this is embarrassing for the WTA.

sure, Maria always has some excuses when she loses....

Venus has a good excuse, her worst surface and the good excuse that Sabine has beaten many top players before :wavey:

And I hope next time you and everybody else like you will remember this when one of your faves loses. You people always ready to attack others and when the tables turn you are the first to mention how your faves did not play well, was injured etc. I'm not saying I agree with any fans of Venus using whatever excuses but people who live in glass houses need to stop throwing stones.

THAT'S ALL

Foxy

I cant remember I have talked about Henin or Jankovic losses and said they losed because of an injury. I never do that. The player who plays the best tennis at that moment will win. Saying that Venus losed because she playd bad is not gonna make venus performance better. Yes she has more potential than Sabine but someday you are not at your best even if you try your best, venus did? and it wasnt enough

So I take it that a player on the rise is not allowed to cause an upset? If they do, the player they upset should immediately retire? The world is not perfect, any player isn't going to win every match day in and day out. If that were the case, then i guess all players ranked below 10 should retire also.

Great logic guys. :yeah:

"Many"? :spit:

Safina, Davenport, Chakvetadtze, and all in not more than 15 months...
Including some really good matches against some other top 20 players.
Sabine is only too unconsitent, but when she has a good day, it isn´t a shame to lose against her..and we all heard this to so many times before..Venus is so bad, she should retire, and every year she wins Wimbledon again, and that was only her 3rd defeat since Moscow :weirdo: ..but right she is so bad
