Sorry that Patty's lost early again - but at least this time she made a good fight of it

The fact that she can't beat Vesnina on a surface she's beaten Henin, Serena and Capraiti on shows how far Patty has fell.

She's nowwhere near the player she was even 3 years ago.

Oh, well. Congrats Elena.

Patty
Neither is my favorite, but I like them both. Too bad one of them had to lose. Elena is on an ascend and it is good to see she continues, but Patty could use a break.

I love Vesnina but I really wanted Patty to win this match because she desperately needs a win. At least doubles is going much better and at least she put up a fight saving a lot of MPs...

I can't really give an account of this match in fearing that it will be far too biased. I will just say that Vesnina played well and Schnyder fought to the last point, which is a nice change from her recent "matches."

I expected a two set affair with Vesnina the victor. The more I am surprised that Schnyder was able to make a match of it after being destroyed in the opener.

Patty is on the decline, more steadily now than ever but that's the situation. When she starts getting beaten with regularity on her favourite surface, you know the motivation is going to drop.

Elena though is having a turn-around year. Good to see her doing so consistently well.

The Cuckoo Clock used to tank first sets when she fell behind, but could come back and win in 3 against (sorry Lena) a mid-level player, even an improving one. Looks like those days are ova.

Quite a difference from the Strange Suissie's amazing run in this event 7 years ago (beating Momo, Mareee, the Serena having that incredible year, and Jen B4 losing to Iva in the final.)

BTW, I still think she may not play out the whole year, but retire after RG. Whenever, we get 2C then if The White Mile ever comes out, and if the Frankfurt Felon has made "other arrangements" for himself. ;)

Yeah, a lot of positives to take from this for Patty fans IMHO. Sure she didn't win, but she was able to make it a close match.

Not really, matches like these mean nothing in a long term. Especially not in case of Schnyder who is well past her prime, knows that she isn't going to improve and isn't going to work harder.

well I don't agree. But I think Patty's mind is special, so she will remain in her slump a little more. Maybe in Roland Garros we see the final burning of Patty :)

I hope she wouldn't retire this year..

Losing to Vesnina on clay in Charelston and not tanking is pretty much as low as she can go. Not surprised though I guess.

Hopefully it means she is going to peak for the French Open or some crap that I can delude myself into believing.

Shameful...

I find this result rather encouraging for Patty. Vesnina is playing well this year and the fact that Patty fought when getting thumped at least tells me she still cares. If nothing happens in Europe I will join the calls for retirement. She tends to spring a surprise result when she's looking down and out.

Schnyder only really fights at Charleston.
Schnyder losing early in Charleston looks ominously at retirement.

To Elena's credit, this is one of her best surfaces. This time of the year she plays well. I predicted this.

Hence "the fact the she can't beat Vesnina on this surface" :p

But she still had a very strong second half of the year in 2008 after losing to Elena in Amelia Island (6-2 in the third) so I wouldn't write her off just yet. If things don't improve on the European clay season, then I will.

Vesnina's having an excellent year with the notable exception of that ugly first-round loss at Australian Open. :o I hope she can actually win a title this year. One step at a time though. I hope she can make the quarterfinal against Venus Williams.

She shouldn't retire unless she chooses to - Navratilova, King, Casals, Wade and I'm sure others played into their 40's. Can't understand nowadays why when a player reaches 30 that everyone calls for them to retire.

Patty played a great match, definitely worthy of her history in the Charlie tournament. She just took her eye off the ball at the wrong time in the 3rd set for a couple of points, and Vesnina seized the moment.

Patty is a step slower than she was 3 years ago when she beat Henin, but she still moves extremely well on Har-Tru, and she would have had great chances to reach the final again here this year if she just could have gotten through this match.
