2:27 !!

Such a long match for the relatively quick-looking scoreline. Were there lots of long Deuce games?

Sania had a break in the third too :(

Her first match on green clay this year, and she also had a weak start into the tournament of Acapulco, she just needs a bit time..
But I am glad that she won it, I mean after 6/1 2/0 it was horrible, and she even was break behind in 3rd set, but she was able to win it, and that is the main thing :)

Now against Liscki, who could be also a bit dangerous, but Venus will win against her :)

This is clay, people.

I expect Venus to struggle in the earlier rounds, but I bet she'll only improve as the tournament progresses. Rather her be challenged this early than later on.

I can only hope that Venus finds her form like she did in Acapulco in time to win the title. She played so well in the first set and the start of the second. After that, it was too much to stomach. Take a look for yourself:

Great match practice for Vee! But she looked lost and tired during the 2nd.

And Mirza was certainly no pushover.

I dont care if it's clay!! She is playing Mirza! Who is like 1-4 on clay in the last few years!

Very bad here. Can only improve! Could have been a great scoreline! She lead 3-1 in the second!

I just want Venus to win, i'll take whatever means nessecary:lol:

Was up a break though in the second, but i'm suspecting Mirza played above herself today. Quite possibly though, Venus could've just started spraying errors. It was probably a medium of those elements.

Keep going Vee.

Good job Venus! :) We figured Mirza could be somewhat of a tricky opponent. But at least she got through it & now 16-2 on the year :hearts:

Lisicki looms ahead for Vee. Should be a 2 set win, but most likely will be a 3 setter.. Which makes me nervous :scared:

Good try Sania!! You will get her next time. ;)

Frankly speaking, this is Sania who is out of form for some matches now and is playing on clay. So Venus may require some introspection to see what she did today. Or may be Sania rocked in the second set. She is so damn unpredictable.

I was there and watched the entire match. Venus took two nasty falls. It was like she didn't know what to do with her feet on clay. After the match she said that the falls were due to the ground being wet which prevented her from sliding. Sania made some good shots especially in the second set. Neither could hold serve there for a while but in the third, Venus finally broke her and converted. Good first round match though for Venus. :)

thanks for the report.
I expected as much. Venus always has trouble in her first few rounds of a clay event just trying to find her footing. Especially on green clay where she slips around a lot more.

You mean green clay, right? Venus has already won Acapulco on red clay this season  She played 3 consecutive 3-set matches before she pulled her game together

Oh Venus and that hair:o:lol:

Green Clay really is going to test Venus this week. Probably her weaker clay-court surfaces of the two and she's gonna have to commit to her footwork and sliding to dig this tournament out.

It's going to be like the early rounds in Acapulco all over again:lol:

So you guys are telling me Venus was up 6-1 3-1... then lost 6 games in a row to be 0-1* in the third?

I suspect Venus being the kind soul she is, felt so bad after what she did to Pavlyuchekova in Dubai, and considering Sania isn't living up to her potential... some unconscious self-subotage kicked in. Someone ought to message Venus and let her know, a bigger act of kindness would be to spare her fans from this torture. :sobbing:

Venus if your reading, and want to make it up to your fans, please give Lickin or whomever a good beatdown. Merci.

Well the most important thing here is that Venus won her match and she did :yeah: So hopefully it's a sign that she's only getting the kinks out of her game on the clay before the later rounds.

To a certain extent both of these players are really all or nothing with no middle gear. Expected rollercoaster, errorfest, whatever given it is early clay season.

Mirza may be 1-4 (now 5) but that's cuz she's always been injured during the clay season. Hopefully she turns that shit around this year!
