With probably some withdrawals she has a good chance to get really far. If she wins this tournament it could give her direct entry in the Wimbledon MD

It's a big IF, and I think it's dumb tht she hasn't entered any other tourneys in the next 2 weeks - would give her MORE chance to make Wimby MD, and not have to do it all in 1 tourney. No surprises that she wants to play in her "coach's" home country (actually he was born in Ireland but anyway :p ).

Or that I have to believe her... :p Why would her Dad say something about the relationship in the media if it wasn't true? It's closer to becoming a WTA tournament than a 25k honestly. It's just that it's too far from everything for players who don't swim in money to fly here for just 1 tournament.

Yes, well I'm saying what I think. I know how her Dad can be (I have spoken to him a few times), but it's not just her Dad - I know lots of people who know her, so I have my own opinions on the whole thing, which I haven't really made public. You can agree, disagree or stay undecided, I don't mind, I just said what I think. :p

Pretty decent draw for Katie, managed to avoid who I would consider the more dangerous of the lower seeds being in her half (Sevastova, Kucova)...Hlavackova could be tough if Katie gets nervous, but hopefully she can at least score a SF or better, huge points at stake for her...Time to take advantage!

Mixed Emotions at Soweto Open (http://satablog.wordpress.com/2009/04/30/michaella-krajicek-supports-her-animal-friends/)

There was a lot to talk about as players fought valiantly for quarter-final places in the R1-million Soweto Open women’s ITF tournament at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex in this world-renowned slice of South Africa on Thursday.

On a topsy-turvy day that made tennis hard work for the players rather than an opportunity to showcase their top-end skills, the last two South Africans in the singles draw didn’t disappear quietly, while the rest of the cosmopolitan field fared more or less according to form.

SA number one Natalie Grandin started well before succumbing to the swirling wind and on-song Mauritian Marinne Giraud 6-2 3-6 4-6, while her 16-year-old compatriot Christi Potgieter almost unseated fourth seed Anastasija Sevastova in a memorable first set before the Latvian regained her balance and left nothing more than crumbs on the table winning 7-5 6-3. And to cap a modest day for Grandin, the Durbanite and her partner lost their late-afternoon doubles match and with it a berth in the last eight.

For the rest of the fancied few, top seed Katie O’Brien of Great Britain sounded an ominous warning with a comprehensive defeat of flamboyant African American Megan Moulton-Levy 6-3 6-3 while her chief singles rival, the Netherlands’ glamorous Michaella Krajicek saw off a never-say-die Slovakian in Dominika Nociarova 4-6 6-1 6-3.

“I made life difficult for myself,” Krajicek said afterwards. “The second set was good, though, while the third got a bit ’screamy’. I got a bit emotional and so did Dominika, but I’m getting better every day.”

However, the real story Thursday was not about tennis. The talk of the tennis courts was Krajicek’s donation of R20 000 to a Roodepoort home for abused and abandoned animals.

Now playing out of Bradenton Sarasota in Florida, where she trains with her South African coach Allistair McCaw, the 20-year-old Krajicek said her love for dogs in particular began as a toddler at the family home in the Netherlands town of Delft.

“I was dog crazy since I was little,” she said. “I plan to establish a foundation for animals later on. They can’t talk for themselves, so they need us far more than we realise.”

Krajicek related how two days before, former Randburg, Johannesburg resident McCaw has spotted a local newspaper article about the animal shelter and its need for funds and the rest is history.

Getting back to the tennis, sixth seed Kristina Kucova of Slovakia, a player who as yet is not getting the attention her performances deserve, again did justice to her ranking in defeating France’s Anais Laurendon 7-5 6-2. She meets Krajicek in Friday’s quarter-finals and this could be the match-up of the day.

Flamboyant or glamorous. Either way it's better than being described as a younger version of Paul Scholes like Naomi C did this week. They didn't even say a younger female version of Paul Scholes.

UPS AND DOWNS FOR TOP SEEDS AT SOWETO OPEN (http://satablog.wordpress.com/2009/05/01/soweto-ladies-open-friday-results/)

Jabavu, Soweto - Upset results were the name of the game in the quarter-finals of the R1-million ITF Soweto Open women’s tennis tournament at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex here Friday.

In arguably the best match of the day and certainly the one with the most drama in this superb City of Johannesburg-sponsored event, sixth seed Kristina Kucova outlasted second seed Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-3 4-6 6-4 in two hours and 25 minutes, while the Czech Republic’s eighth-seeded Eva Hrdinova defeated third seed Kathrin Woerle of Germany 6-4 6-3.

In the other quarter-finals, top seed Katie O’Brien of Great Britain was again in cruise control as she beat the in-form Mauritian, Marinne Giraud, 6-3 6-2 in 70 minutes, while fourth seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia edged out number five Lauren Albanese of the U.S. 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-3) in an absorbing two-hour battle that was even closer than the score suggests.

O’Brien’s opponent, the unseeded Giraud, has defeated seeds here, and beat O’Brien 6-1 6-1 six months ago. “I didn’t start so well but once I found my range I was more confident [against Giraud],” O’Brien said.

The Brit’s all-round game is impressive. She is well-prepared mentally, still fresh after a relatively easy ride during the week and is so solid there is very little weakness left for her opponents to exploit. O’Brien might need all of that when she meets Hrdinova, with whom she has shared the spoils in two recent matches.

The high emotion on court one saw Kucova, initially, and then Krajicek – along with her South African coach Allistair McCaw – question experienced chair umpire Ahmed Abdel Azim of Egypt on various linecalls and overrules.

”I am more disappointed in myself,” said Krajicek. “But there were about 15 overrules, especially on my side, and it is unlucky it had to be this way. It was a very good match and she [Kucova] played her part.

”The windy conditions added to the frustrations,” McCaw said. “Michaella had a good chance to go 5-3 up in the third, so the chances were there.”

The 20-year-old Krajicek has captured the imagination in Soweto with the intensity she puts into her tennis, the R20 000 donation she made Thursday to a shelter for animals, and the black armband she wore in sympathy for the victims of Friday’s tragedy on the Queen’s Day in Holland. It also serves to explain why she was named one of Holland’s most influential women as a teenager just two years ago.

But that takes nothing away from a Kucova victory that was engineered as much by sheer hunger to succeed as it was by her undoubted talent in a thrilling last-four battle in which her willing opponent Krajicek matched her stroke for stroke.

”I wanted to win the quarter-final so badly, it is one of the best victories of my life,” Kucova said. “I tried to change the rhythm of the match, slow then fast. But she [Krajicek] got used to it and I just managed to hang on at the end.”

The engaging Kucova (18) said she is not all that comfortable with playing her best friend and doubles partner Sevastova, who is just 40 days her senior, in Saturday’s semi-finals.

“It is not easy to play your friend, but we have no choice,” she said.

Saturday’s singles semi-finals and the doubles final should whet the appetite for what shapes to be an outstanding finale when the last two standing match up for the tournament’s showdown on Sunday.
