oh, I thought this ranking was new names (births 2008)
It's different of course.

Because I find it weird too, I don't personally know any Taras, Emas, Andjelinas, Anastasijas, Lanas, Magdalenas, Teas or Dorotejas. Those are all the names that have become popular recently. (Though, I shouldn't be throwing stones, my own name isn't even on the list :tape:)

Well my nick name for her is Eva (long story) and she is short so '-ita' - Little Eva :)

It's a pun on the fact she has SPS - small person syndrome. They feel inadequate so overcompensate and often end up making a bid to take over the world. :p

Nothing to do with The Evita ;)

Btw. in Greece it is custom to name your child after your parents (not everybody does it of course). If the first child is a boy it's named after his grandfather on the father's side, the second boy after the mother's father. Same goes for girls after the respective grandmothers.

Greece

Female:

Maria, Eleni, Aikaterini, Vasiliki, Sofia, Eirini, Georgia, Angeliki, Styliani, Anastasia, Dimitra, Alexandra, Christina, Eleftheria, Ioanna, Olga, Stavroula, Anna, Athanasia, Athina, Eftychia, Evangelia, Paraskevi, Yeoryia

Male:

Georgios, Dimitrios, Konstantinos, Nikolaos, Ioannis, Alexandros, Christos, Theodoros, Antonios, Vasileios, Andreas, Apostolos, Evangelos, Michail, Panagiotis, Spyridon, Angelos, Aristeidis, Athanasios, Dimosthenis, Marios, Niki, Sotirios, Yeoryios

-
Btw. in Greece it is custom to name your child after your parents (not everybody does it of course). If the first child is a boy it's named after his grandfather on the father's side, the second boy after the mother's father. Same goes for girls after the respective grandmothers.

Yep. As you can see, the names are similar to the Romanian, Russian, Serbian, and Bulgarian (and other Orthodox) names. I'll do the translations to names you guys might know:
Elenni-Lena, Elena, Helen
Aikaterini-Ekaterina, Katerina
Sofia-Sophie, Sophia
Eirini-Irina, Irene
Angeliki-Angela
Anastasia-Sia, Nastya, Anastasiya, Stasia, Stacey
Ioanna-Johanna, Joanne
Evangelia-Eva, Angela, Lea, Angie
Paraskevi-Vivian, Friday(jk)
*Yeoryia and Georgia are the same thing. Names like Dimitra, Styliani, etc. are names that I don't know the translations. Other names like Maria, Alexandra, etc. have obvious translations. Despina is also popular.

Georgios, Yeorgios-George
Dimitrios-Jimmy, Jim
Nikolaos-Nikolay, Nicholas, Nick
Konstantinos-Gus, Constantine
Ioannis-John
Antonios-Anthony
Vasileios-Basil
Evangelos-Evan, Angelo
Panagiotis-Peter, Pete
*Also Petros is popular;)

@schorsch, what is Pete Sampras' name in Greek? Is he a Panagiotis or Petros?

And it means "life" in Greek :wavey::angel:

Actually, that's why my parents chose that name - they like the meaning. They had no idea I'd turn out to be such a lazy, lifeless couch-potato. :tape:
Also, when I was a year old, my mom went to a brief trip to Moscow where she learnt the story of Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya (http://www.greeklish.org/features/zoya/home.html) which is no matter how heroic NOT a pretty story at all so my mom concluded it's a bad karma and tried to persude my dad to change my name to Zorka. :help:

immigration policy seems to work perfectly in Belgium :help::o:o:o

I used to work for a benefits department in the UK and it not uncommon for some families to name all their boys Mohammed. I came across a case of a Somali single mother who had 13 kids and the 8 boys were all called Mohammed. It's insane.

I have a friend who intends to have 4 sons and name them all Milan. When we asked him why, he said: ''That way, when I yell ''Milane, bring dad a beer!'', I'll get four beers instead of one''.
maybe it's the same logic behind all those Mohammeds. ;)

Australian states keep their own individual rankings and I can't be bothered adding them up, but the biggest state has these lists for 2008:
BOYS
Jack
William
Lachlan
Joshua
Cooper
Riley
Thomas
Oliver
James
Benjamin

GIRLS
Mia
Chloe
Isabella
Emily
Olivia
Ella
Charlotte
Sienna
Sophie
Ava

These lists might not be as important as years ago as so many parents seem to spell their kid's names in an "original" way

01 Fluffy
02 Sheepy
03 Baa-Baa
04 Wooly
05 Curly
06 Blackie
07 Baa-Lamb
08 Lover
09 Bo
