Bet she got bit by "the rule." Since she was still in a 2 week tourney (IW) as of qualifying sign in deadline for the next week's ITF (Redding), I think they automatically withdraw you from singles of the ITF the following week. Wonder if she knew that before going to Redding?

AN ELITE EIGHT
Date-Krumm among those advancing to quarterfinals

By Jeffrey Jen (Contact)

Photo Gallery
USTA Womens Pro Challenger 1

After a third straight day of serves, forehands and backhands, pared the field to eight at the seventh annual USTA Women's Pro Challenger of Redding at Sun Oaks Tennis & Fitness.

There remains a bit of everything from the frequent Canadian to the rising Swiss player to the last two Americans and a Croatian teen.

Then there's the situation of Japan's 38-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm.

In 1995, Japan's Kimiko Date finished the season fourth in the world in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Her contemporaries then included the likes of Steffi Graff, Gabriela Sabatini and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

The following year, she retired four days before her 26th birthday with her ranking still No. 8.

Yet, here is Date-Krumm, less a year after returning to competitive tennis following a 12-year layoff, beating countrywoman Aiko Nakamura 6-0, 6-4 in Thursday's second round at Sun Oaks.

Date-Krumm blitzed through the first set before Nakamura, 25, improved her play. But, Date-Krumm eventually broke Nakamura's serve in the 10th game, the final one of the match, to continue her comeback.

"It's almost going way too well," said Date-Krumm through her agent/translator Kay Matsuoka. "It hasn't been a year yet since I've come back. At first, I was only going to play in Japan. But now I'm traveling around the world. Things have been going well, almost too well."

Date-Krumm listed a few reasons to return after being away from the tour for so long.

"When I retired, I had no regrets," said Date-Krumm, who married German race car driver Michael Krumm while in retirement. "But, I still love sports and still love challenging myself. My husband had never seen me play and wanted to."

An exhibition match with Graf and Martina Navratilova last year also helped spur things along. Date-Krumm entered some International Tennis Federation (ITF) matches in Japan and won three.

So far, she's rolled through her first two matches as the No. 7 seed at Sun Oaks, dropping a combined nine games while cruising into today's singles quarterfinals.

Now Date-Krumm faces a player half her age in 19-year-old Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland. The fourth-seeded Voegele dispatched Russia's Alexandra Panova 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday.

The hard-hitting Panova went for her shots much of the match, but frequently misfired. Voegele was much steadier and more consistent, which is why she is advancing despite saying she hasn't played her best tennis yet this week.

Voegele and the seventh-seeded Date-Krumm lead off the quarterfinals action at 11 a.m. today on Sun Oaks' court 3 followed by a match pitting the two remaining Americans in the draw.

Madison Brengle knocked off fifth-seeded Masa Zec-Peskiric 6-4, 7-5 in the only upset of a seeded player Thursday. Brengle, 18, trailed 4-2 in the second set but won the next three games. She had a chance to serve out the match at 5-4, but was broken. However, Brengle broke right back and closed out Zec-Peskiric on her next service game.

It was the third straight year Brengle played in the second round in Redding, but the first time she advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to a commitment to fitness and more experience on tour.

"The points were long," Brengle said. "Last year, I definitely wasn't this fit and it helped especially at the end. She puts a lot of spin on the ball. Normally, I hit flat and play closer to the baseline, but I had to adjust the way I play."

Brengle's next opponent is Lauren Granville, a 27-year-old veteran coming back from a wrist injury, who beat India's Shikha Uberoi 6-3, 6-3.

The first quarterfinal singles match on court 2 features Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic, 15, against Japan's Rika Fujiwara, 27.

Tomljanovic outlasted 17-year-old American Asia Muhammed 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, in her eighth career pro tournament.

The veteran Fujiwara beat Greece's Anna Gerasimou 6-0, 6-1.

The final singles matchup pits No. 3 Stephanie Dubois of Canada against No. 6 Alberta Brianti of Italy.

Dubois overcame a tough challenge from American teenager Sloane Stephens, who turns 16 today. Dubois won the first set 6-2, but Stephens came back to take the second 7-5 and even the match. But Dubois, 22, bounced back to win the third set 6-2.

Brianti, 28, had an easier time beating China's Meng Yuan 6-3, 6-3.

Stephens came up a winner in doubles as she and fellow American Christina McHale beat Story Tweedie-Yates and Indonesia's Romana Tedjakusuma 6-4, 6-3. In the other doubles quarterfinals match on Thursday, Americans Alexa Glatch and Christina Fusano, the No. 1 seed in the draw, beat fellow Americans Nicole Gibbs and Stacey Tan 6-1, 6-1.

Fusano and Glatch meet the third-seeds, Panova and Japan's Tomoko Yonemura in the semifinals today. Stephens and McHale face Zec-Peskiric and Belarus' Anna Orlik in the match.

Laura Granville's first trip to Redding couldn't have gone any better for the tennis veteran.

The 27-year-old American arrived in town last week wondering how long it would take to shake off the rust from a 13-month layoff brought on by a left wrist injury.

Now, Granville is in the singles final of the USTA Women's Pro Challenger of Redding after a 6-4, 6-1 victory over sixth-seeded Alberta Brianti of Italy at Sun Oaks Tennis & Fitness on Saturday.

"This is so much better than I expected coming back," Granville said. "I'm really looking forward to the finals."

Granville takes on Rika Fujiwara of Japan starting at noon today. Fujiwara ended the run of Japan's 38-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4, 6-3 in the other Saturday semifinal.

The doubles final, with Russia's Alexandra Panova and Japan's Tomoko Yonemura taking on Slovenia's Masa Zec-Peskiric and Belarus' Anna Orlik, will follow the singles match today on court 3, depending on weather conditions.

Both of Saturday's matches were moved indoors due to rain in the morning.

In Granville's mind the move indoors, where the playing surface is faster, favored her. Granville prefers playing on fast surfaces, one of the reasons why she chose Sun Oaks' hard courts to return to the pro tour. She also played her two qualifying matches in Redding on the indoor courts due to rain during those rounds this past Sunday and Monday.

"I really like fast courts," Granville said. "I have shorter backswings. I already had matches on these indoor courts, so I was comfortable as soon as I got on them today."

Brianti didn't have to play qualifying to get into the main draw, but she looked just as comfortable on the indoor surface early on, taking a 2-0 lead in the first set.

Granville broke back in the fourth game and the two settled down to a series of service holds. But up 5-4, Granville turned the pressure up on Brianti's serve in the 10th game. On her second set point of the game, Granville mishit a service return. But the ball bounced short and in, forcing Brianti to hit a backhand long.

The American seized the momentum there and rolled through the first four games of the second set. Brianti broke servce and had chances to get to 2-4, but Granville broke right back and closed things out a game later.

"Indoors, you have to serve good and be consistent," Brianti said. "She played better in the second set. But, I'm glad. From the first match here to today, I kept playing better."

Fujiwara finally solved Date-Krumm in their fourth meeting. Date-Krumm won the first three, but Fujiwara was able to get key breaks of serve late in both sets to advance.

USTA Women's Pro Tennis Final

The rain and the snowflakes came down for only a few minutes.

But it was enough to force everyone at Sun Oaks Tennis & Fitness to scurry for cover during a 30-minute delay.

It also was enough time for Laura Granville to get her confidence back and finish a big return to competitive pro tennis.

Granville beat Japan's Rika Fujiwara 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the singles final of the USTA Women's Pro Challenger of Redding on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Chicago native hadn't competed in a pro event since injuring her left wrist in the finals of a challenger event in Midland, Texas, in February 2008. The 13-month layoff left Granville looking for a place to begin rebuilding her pro ranking, which was usually in the Top 100 from 2001 to 2007.

Granville came to Redding simply looking to get competitive matches in so she could begin building her game back up. Instead, she leaves with the $2,940 first-place prize money and her eighth career title on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit.

"I've had the best week here," Granville said to fans attending the final during a brief post-game awards ceremony. "This tournament will have special place in my heart."

There was still some tennis to go as the doubles final took to the court after the singles match.

Belarus' 16-year-old Anna Orlik and Slovenia's Masa Zec-Peskiric would capture the doubles title with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Russia's Alexandra Panova and Japan's Tomoko Yonemura.

Both Granville and Fujiwara were experienced veterans who knew what it took to win a final. Granville played college tennis at Stanford University before turning pro in 2001 and has earned over $1 million in prize money since then. Fujiwara is also 27 and a pro since 1999. She's racked up six ITF singles titles and 15 doubles titles since then.

Granville hadn't lost a set in two qualifying matches and four matches in the main draw entering the final, though she was pushed hard in a few sets along the way. Fujiwara dropped her first set of her tournament to American wildcard Stacy Tan 6-1, then won the next two in tiebreakers. She then raced through her next three matches and entered the final on a roll.

However, that changed in the first set when Fujiwara got off to a slow start in the final.

After the two players traded service breaks to start the match, Granville reeled off four straight games. Fujiwara finally held serve, but Granville promptly closed out the first set.

At that point, Fujiwara had been spraying errors around while Granville was staying consistent. But Fujiwara started to find her rhythm in the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and twice breaking Granville.

"I didn't do anything different," Fujiwara said. "Just focus and watch the ball. Try to fight."

Fujiwara's groundstrokes got better and she utilized her approach shots and volley game more. Frequently, she snuck in behind Granville's serve to attack the net and usually with good results.

"Her return is one of the best parts of her game," Granville said. "She was killing me on my second serve."

Granville tried to fight back and won the next two games. She had a chance to get back on serve when she got up 15-30 on Fujiwara's serve. But Fujiwara came up with a nice drop shot that Granville got to and jumped into the back right corner of the court. Fujiwara then hit a perfect lob to get back at 30-30. Two errors by Granville later, Fujiwara was up 5-2 and then broke to knot the match up.

She held serve to start the third set and that was when the rain and light snow came. Though it showered for only a few minutes, the officials needed time to dry off Sun Oak's court 3 before action continued.

Fujiwara's game didn't falter, but it gave Granville a big reprieve.

"I got lucky with the rain," Granville said. "Rika started playing so well in the second set well that I was demoralized. I needed to regroup."

Fujiwara did break Granville's serve in the first game after the delay, but it took five break points. That was enough for Granville to settle down. She broke right back, held serve and then went 3-2 when Fujiwara double-faulted twice.

"I was able to raise my game," Granville said. "I got a late burst of energy."

The two traded breaks before Granville hit a forehand passing shot to hold serve and go up 5-3.

She had a match point on Fujiwara's serve, but the small Japanese made a spinning half-stab volley on a forehand pass to stay alive. Fujiwara eventually held to get to 4-5.

However, Granville was able to close things out. Up 30-15, she uncorked a first serve right at Fujiwara's body for a service winner. On the second match point, Fujiwara tried to sneak in on a first serve, but Granville was waiting with a forehand pass into the open right side of the court.

"I'm real happy," Granville said. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could win here after being off for 13 months."
